I am sure that this has probably been discussed before, but I haven’t seen it so I wanted to raise the topic again.
While everyone can be a homer to some extent, I am constantly amazed at the amount of abject homerism displayed by fans of all NFL clubs. I love the Dallas Cowboys, I have since I was 7, I will always be a fan. I expect my team to do well every year, but I try to remain objective at the same time. I have found that the majority of this board falls into that category, which is probably why I like it here so much. Not that I agree with everything that is said, in fact I disagree with some of you almost all the time, but I just don’t see the blatant homerism on this board that I see on some of the others.
For example, if you go over to extremeskins they have a thread where they are forecasting their wins and losses for 07. Most of the guesses have come in the 12-4 range. While I think it is great to back your team, I just can’t for the life of me see how anyone, homer or not could expect that team to go from 5-11 to 12-4. They point to injuries and the like, but good lord, no pass rush last year, and adding 27 DB’s in the off season isn’t going to address that.
You can find evidence of that on every message board of every team around the league, well perhaps not the lions, those guys are pissed and they will probably stay that way. I see it here as well but I see the opposite more frequently. A lot of people are almost anti-homerisitic for the sake of not being a homer. Sometimes, I wonder if they are fans at all, or maybe they are just sour about life in general and always expect the worst. I dunno.
I guess my question is this:
Do you consider yourself a homer?
I do at times, but I think I am realistic enough to be objective. I am curious as to how the rest of you feel about it.
