Horn's RB Bergeron gone? Is this a big deal for Texas?

Sumlin has been there for 3 years and recruited these guys. Strong recruited none of these guys. He put the team on notice that it would be his way or the highway on day one. It was reported immediately that some guys had trouble fitting in with his ways. So to those that follow UT football the rape case was a surprise, but the other names aren't and were already in the doghouse. There are others that won't be that big of a surprise if they are cut. HUGE difference, IMO. You're seeing guys that didn't get with the program of the new regime vs guys that were recruited by and have been under Sumlin their entire college football careers.

Those guys are Longhorns, regardless whether they're Mack's recruits or Strong's recruits. These same guys had the chance to buy in to Strong's program when he got there and "warned them" about his rules. They chose to stick around, which to me means they agreed to play by Strong's rules, and then subsequently broke either those team rules or the law.

That's just like the above Aggies are Aggies, regardless if they were recruited by Sumlin or the previous coach (Mike Sherman). At least two of those guys are holdovers from before Sumlin got there too, FYI. Sumlin is just starting his 3rd year of coaching at A&M.

Mac was an excellent coach for many years.

I think the team needed a change of direction though. It just didn't seem to be working anymore for a program that really has no excuses not to be one of the very best.

I think the biggest problem with the recent years is that these recruits came in with a since of entitlement that they didn't earn. They thought they were the 2005 Longhorns.

I definitely agree. Lots of just bad character guys that just brought the team down. I love college ball & thought Strong was a good hire. It seems at first glance he is putting the hammer down. EXACTLY what that program needs.

UT should always be one of the top programs with all the resources and recruits available to them. No excuses.

Texas will no longer be charmin soft.

That should be a big concern to the rest of the country.

As a Tech fan I miss Mack already.

Much needed, i have some Longhorn friends who need to quit drinking the koolaide that there will be instant turn around however, Strong himself has asked for a realist expectation for the coming season.

It will be a smashing success if this 2014 Longhorn team reached 7-5, worldbeating if anything better.

In three years time you can judge Strong on his coaching job, he deserves three full seasons to face fan evaluation.

I felt Mack deserver more respect than what he got in the end.

As a Horns fan, I love this. This team needed an overhaul. I don't expect much on the field this year, but Strong is laying the groundwork for a decent future.

Mack took over a 4-7 Longhorns team and year 1 got them to 9-3 and a win in the Cotton Bowl why should Strong need time? Mack was expected to come in and win and he did

Mack walked in to Ricky Williams and Major Applewhite on offense and Quentin Jammer and DD Lewis on defense.
The talent wasn't poor when he got there. Right now it is full of highly ranked recruits who simply can't play football.
The recruiting has been the biggest issue. Grabbing athletes early in the junior year than assuming they can learn to play football.

The old Big 12 South set up was a far easier road to wins than this new Big 12 round robin full of quality teams. OSU and Baylor are totally different programs now.

There is no harder conference in football.
Yes, the SEC has better teams but they have a heck of a lot more drivel than the Big 12 and one less conference game.

Mack's body of work was excellent but like Landry with the Cowboys the time at the end was very forgettable.

He walked into 4-7 Mack is a damn fine HC and I think he deserved better. People praise Strong? for what? He needs a year? this is UT you don't cut any slack why should slack be given to Strong? He walks into a lot of top recruits as well so expectation should not be lowered. Many got what they wanted with Mack leaving excuse me if I hold the next HC to that same standard

Mac will still make millions off UT so he's ok as far as I've read. He had a good run.

The new coach is a discipline guy which seemed to have been lacking.

I am a Tech fan and was at the 42-35 win over Mack in year 1.

I hoped they'd keep Mack a few more years.

I am a huge Texas high school football fan and have followed it for 30 years.
Texas had no idea how to identify and recruit quality players the last 5 years.
His assistants coming in were often powerhouse HS coaches who knew the talent but that waned.

Rankings are largely pointless and misleading.
UT recruited kids I had seen in person that were flat terrible football players.
They didn't recruit talent like Manziel, RG3, Brees, Luck.

That Texas cupboard is not barren but it isn't stocked with NFL talent.
And Texas will play 3-5 games versus teams with better talent in 2014/5.
They did not do that in 1998.

Texas earned every bit of that teasip nickname under Mack.
That team grew painfully soft and guys like Chris Simms are admitting it.

I am really going to enjoy UT fans whining after every Strong loss and seeing the frequent Red McComb style racial overtones within.
Makes it a lot easier for Tech recruit to play for Coach Kingsbury.

UT didn't lose more than 3 games from 2000-2009. The last 4 years they lost 21.
As the rest of the conference got better (and TAMU left for the SEC) they were getting FAR, FAR worse.

I don't think Strong will have a problem going 8-5 or 9-4. But by UT standards, that's pretty unacceptable.

Somewhere I remember reading an article (was it at SI?) about not only the Texas football program going soft, but pretty much the entire Athletics program, and it really stressed the basketball program as well.

I think he's going to need time. He's going to need time to implement his Defensive and Offensive schemes. The players on the roster now may or may not fit what Strong does. The climate around Austin is also going to take time to change. He's done a lot to remedy that already but it's going to take more then just kicking some guys off the team IMO. It will take time but I like what I'm seeing so far.

I've waited 6 years to see a team that is better then .500 or good enough to make the playoffs. I've waited 19 years to see a team that can make a Conference Championship or Superbowl.

I can give Charlie Strong some time to get Texas turned around.

Agree. That team needed a quick kick in the pants. I think Strong is doing just that.

Didn't they have a good baseball team this year? I think they went pretty far in the college World Series unless I'm having a total brain fart.

Yes they did. They lost to Vandy in the Semis 4-3 in 10 innings. Vandy went on to beat Virginia in the Finals.

Ok. Thanks. I thought I remembered reading that.

That will help that facet of their athletic program. I know they've had a history of great baseball there.
