How are we feeling about our starting 5 OL?

The line is never going to be as good as the 90s or prime Tyron, Martin, and Frederick but all you need is good chemistry and low number of busted assignments. We can get by with Hoffman/Bass at guard. We just need better skill players around them.
Funny you should mention the 90s OL. Most of that group played on the 1989 team that went 1-15.

Guyton was always picked higher based off potential and intangible.

If you go back, every scouting report stated he was a developmental prospect. Limited reps at RT and we asked him to play LT without a ton of reps. I would love to cut Steele and shift Guyton to RT.

I would be comfortable starting next season with Smith - Bass - Beebe - Hoffman - Guyton. They seem to gel well and the interior + Tyler has that nasty to them.
Agree completely that he was a developmental player from the start, but I think he has still performed way under expectations so far. Guyton has been closer to Mazi Smith than Tyler Smith in terms of play as a rookie and honestly I think it would be a mistake to just hand him a starting role going into 2025 if they have any actual intention to trying to win the division. I'd make Guyton compete for it and it would be tempting to keep Steele on the roster for that reason alone.

Guyton just doesn’t look to me like he enjoys football

I think he is in the Mazi Smith that he’s a freakish athlete and is in that 1%. I just haven’t seen that nasty you see from guys like Martin, Frederick, Tyler Smith … hell even Beebe and Hoffman

To see these guys get movement, and push people off the ball, it looked great!!! It's been looking great for the last few weeks, grant it some will say we're playing against bad defenses, I get that. The object is to get movement on the guy in front of you and to create lanes/sustain blocks. These guys have been looking really good, I'm no trying to anoint them and put them all in Canton. There's been better play coming from these guys, and it should be praised!! Please give your thoughts
Hard to tell. We have not played anyone as of late.

Guyton - work in progress
Smith - stud
Beebe - work in progress
Martin - retiring
Steele - potential cap casualty

Hoffman/Bass both undrafted, but look like promising back ups, who could start if needed. If so, we have zero depth.

once again; YOU DO NOT DO THAT. NO TEAM DOES THAT. Get it yet?
I think I need you to clarify. An offensive line is a team in itself. You find individuals and you’ll teach them to work together. What do you mean no team does that again clarify

It's the 5 best combo that matters, not individual players. Finding a LT (as per example of Guyton) is difficult.
They move people around all the time. I totally agree. BB is not a natural center, but he’s doing a good job. Can’t give you a better example than our own team.

Hoffman, Bass and Richards have all shown they can play and start in this league

Interesting how the pass protection has improved since they have stayed more committed to running the ball.

The next 3 weeks will be telling but I don't want them to draft an olinemen in rounds 1 or 2.
Draft the best player available. We always do bad when we reach.

Guyton needs to get strong in his arms and upper body. He also needs to get tougher. He can't miss games because he has a hang nail.

I would find a way to play Hoffman. It is the toughness that he plays with that I like.

This line is clearly blocking better than the line with Beebe and Martin. I need to see Beebe improve significantly over the off-season. I am sure he can and will.

I hate saying it but Martin is no longer the guy we knew. I don't know if it is injuries or just age but with his contract up, I would let him retire or move on. I hate to say it because he is a future HoF players but I would not take a chance giving him another contract expecting him to return to his HoF form.

My thoughts are that Hoffman is part of the best five and should start next season.

Also Tyler Smith is the best LT on the roster. Put him there and suck it up and pay him early. Maybe actually get a discount in return this time. Certainly a multi billionaire has learned that watching “leaves fall” does nothing more than drive up the price.

Trading Steele isn’t out of the question if they aren’t too busy booking stayjum events.

Smith-Bebee-Hoffman-Bass-Guyton
That would be with zero depth.

they play well against crappy defenses. panthers and bengals are 31, 32...giants are 20th,
giants are 31st against the run, panthers are 32nd.

the truth is when you play better teams. I don't get excited about barely beating, losing and beating top 5 picking teams.

Yes and fans of that era thought they all sucked. Especially big Nate.
Yep, Nate and Tuinei were considered busts at the time. I think what made the OL unique in the 90s is that they started the trend of bigger and more physical lineman that wore down defenses vs the 80s trend of smaller and more athletic OLs.

We had a balanced complimentary football team.

Well yes that needs to be addressed, but the thread title is about the starting five.

The only one hitting the road from who is here now is Steele. Add a vet swing tackle and Jones family friend Edoga and you’re close.

SHOW Me a case where a ALL PRO Offensive Lineman was moved to a new position?
Go ahead.

I asked you to clarify. Not be rude. A new permanent position I don’t recall but different positions constantly.

Yes, it is not uncommon for Pro Bowl linemen to switch positions on the offensive line throughout their careers, with many players moving between left tackle and right tackle, or sometimes even shifting to guard depending on team needs and their skillset; notable examples include Tristan Wirfs, Jonah Williams, and Penei Sewell who all switched sides in the.
Stick that up your Christmas spirit. Lol.
