How Big is the Spears Leash?

Sarge, did he poop in your yard or something? You have been an outright hater of Spears since he was drafted. It's almost like he was picked over your son and you have a grudge. It could be just me, but that's the impression I get.

Hater of Spears - hardly - Predicter of his performance at the next level - look it up.

Perhaps you can give me some insight as to why I should be excited about the guy.

He's done next to nothing since he's been here and if you are paying as much attention as you claim you are - you will have noted I predicted same.

Problem is, that was OUR backfield he was in, whiffing on a block, while "The Sopranos-Land Con-Man" stood on the sidelines, stupidly trying to turn him into a blocking FB.

I remember Spears' first(and few) attempts at fullback against Oakland, where he whiffed, and was replaced by Polite in the next game.
But if potential as an offensive blocker was seen, could he move to offensive guard or tackle? He played tight end(and the tuba) in high school.
I think he knows he just can't make it at defensive end, and that he plans a short career. I have no grudge against Marcus or Britney, but just think that neither one of them has much talent. Maybe changing sides of the line might help.

Like you, I hope this is his breakthrough year, but I'm not holding my breath, given LSU's high round draft pick's recent history.

Spears started for a defense that ranked fourth in the NFL after 11 weeks.
Against the run, Spears did what Parcells asked him to do. Spears played the 2-gap read and react defense on the strong-side of the field, and the second year pro played it well. It didn't show up in the stats, but Canty and Spears played excellent run defense, as did Jason Ferguson. He played in the rugged NFC East.

Do you know where Spears was while our defense was being roasted on 3rd down last December? He was standing on the sidelines watching.

I can't wait for Spears to show some of you guys that you are wrong about him. It's on now. 1980s Mid-West football has been traded for speed, quickness, and athleticism, and Spears has all attributes. He just wasn't allowed to use them. Some of you are going to go back and read some of the things that you have said about him and say, "ooops".

Spears has been "backed into a corner". I like my chances with him.

Was just listening to DCFanatic and several of them believe that Spears will be beat out by Hatcher for that starting DE spot cause he's having a really good TC so far. And then they commented that Spears better be looking over his shoulder. They also commented that Canty is coming on and also gave Ratliff some praise as well.

I think his leash is about Five games to give the coaching staff an idea of what he is capablee of IMO.

In those games he needs to:

1.play all-out instead of the way he took plays off his entire time here, heck even in college.

2. get pressure on the qb

3. not warrant a possible demotion or switch to another DE by just doing his job.

His leash will be quite long provided he plays hard which he did on his own accord the last two seasons. If he does play hard, then he may get away with not getting sacks or as much pressure as we all hope and expect.

There is a possibility that Spears just can't do it, though I find that highly unlikely.

After all that talk so far he has not done anything. He put a big fat bullseye on himself with all that talk. He is not going to get any slack from the fans. If Hatcher continues to improve, Spears will be collecting splinters.

Some have actually shown displeasure with Canty. Having said that, he's played better than Spears IMO (although that isn't saying much).

That sounds weird, because Parcells was the tough and gruff "It's a results business" guy, but when I saw SD games I was surprised at how often the backups worked in. Not just in the nickel, but in the regular defense. And he wasn't afraid to start relative unknowns like Stephen Cooper at LB when he needed to.

That is one thing Phillips does very well.

He plays everyone.

That is how the Chargers got 61 sacks last season. Backup players like Stephen Cooper (2.5), Carlos Polk (2), Jacques Cesaire (4), Marques Harris (3), Ryon Bingham (1.5) and Derreck Robinson (1.5) all contributed.

Ever player has something they do well. What I like about Phillips is that it is clear he is committed to finding those qualities and designing inventive ways to make it happen on the field.

If they are on his defensive roster, he will probably find a use for them and they will play.

Canty hasn't been much better, but he has been slightly better. But Canty hasn't opened his mouth to the public, either.
