How can Seattle rebuild twice in ten years but not Dallas?

Just think how Seattle went from the Mike Holmgren, Matt Hasselbeck , Shaun Alexander ,Walter Jones and Marcus Trufant group from like 2002 to about 2008 or so of good playoff football. They even went to a Superbowl and a NFC Championship game during that stretch. Now they have a totally different group of players and Coaches. Pete Carroll, Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch, Richard Sherman ,Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor. Once again they're at the top of the NFC and arguably the best team in Football.

Someone please tell me How Seattle can regroup so fast but the Cowboys can't take the next step and have some playoff success? Is it just the NFC East has been tougher? Or we just haven't had the personnel to get over the hump?

I wouldn't call what we're doing rebuilding, and if we are, we're doing a very poor job of it. Seattle has kept virtually none of the guys from the Hasslebeck, Alexander, Kearney and Trufant days. The core is top to bottom, different. We, on the other hand, have kept Ware, Witten Romo, Hatcher, Ratliff (up until this year) Spencer etc.

It's a good point.

Quite frankly a lot of it is of course drafting better players.

I think Dallas has gotten better at this over the last couple years. But for about the 5-year span before that the drafting was not good... And we've seen the result, an offensive line that was pretty poor for a couple years and now a defensive line that is poor (albeit injuries have played a part too).

But even the injury thing could have been mitigated a certain extent by having a couple younger players capable of replacing Spencer last season and Ratliff or Hatcher this season. But those guys weren't there. Older players break down faster/easier.

Seattle has done well drafting and they sorta lucked out on finding another quality QB.

The other thing that the Cowboys need or needed to be better at is jettisoning older players who aren't capable of playing to a big contract... Again having some better draft choices from 2006 to 2010 be there to alleviate the need to hang on to older players would have had this team in a better position to compete over the last 3 years.

Everyone on this forum, everyone that follows football knows the answer to this. We as fans can only hope that the team will somehow hit a lucky streak at the right time in spite of the guy in charge.

One consistent with the draft, other than our inability to consistently hit pay dirt, is that the scouting department has seen very little change over the years. They're all Jerry's good 'ol boys and yes men. They see and covet the same things he does and it's led to the same mistakes year in and year out. The NFL has evolved. Our scouting department has not. It's pretty much the same reason for why every level of the franchise is failing.

It's just mind boggling to me to think Romo's first playoff game was against that old group of Seahawks and they have totally rebuilt that Seattle team and Romo, Witten and Ware can say they only won one playoff game since then.

No doubt that one big issue is in knowing when to let go.

The Cowboys always seem to wait too long to make changes.

All too often reactive and not proactive.

We have been rebuilding for 17 years..right?

Or did I miss the question?

Agreed.

It's been a problem for along time.

Seattle has drafted really well the past few years.

Getting guys like Richard Sherman and Brandon Mebane in the 3rd round, Kam Chancellor in the 5th round, Robert Turbin in the 4th round, Bobby Wagner and Golden Tate in the 2nd round, and of course Russell Wilson in the 3rd round. And they've hit on most of their recent 1st rounders: Earl Thomas, Bruce Irvin, Russell Okung. It's amazing what good drafting can do for a franchise. And what bad drafting can do to a franchise.. (see Dallas Cowboys for reference).

You mean as in spring a leak?

Then yes..we all hear that air escaping the season right now.

From this fan's perspective, if this team misses the playoffs I would have no qualms if the "brain-trust" came out and said "Hey we gave it our best shot [lipsmack], but we're rebuilding in 2014. Next year's team will look fundamentally different than this year's team. Many of the names that Cowboy fans have been accustomed to over the last few years will not be here in come next season [lipsmack]. We're going to take our lumps on the salary cap and just go with it."

As a matter of fact, if they miss the playoffs, I for one would welcome it.

The Seahawks had poor teams in 2008, 2009 and 2010. By jettisoning. A lot of the dead wood then has allowed them to accumulate a lot of young talent. It also helps to find a franchise Qb in the 3rd round.
