How do you feel about the Cowboy's future?

For sake of argument, I am referring to the next 2 years.
In my opinion, what you see is what you got.
Because of the high cap hits we are carrying on the older vets, I don't see us as players
in free agency the next 2 years.
Stephen Jones has said as much.
We will be doing well to tie up our good young players like Dez.

I also have concern about our older players declining in performance due to age and injury, ie D. Ware.

Really the only potential changes I see would be draft picks coming in , and , or coaching changes.

So do you feel optimistic or pessimisic about our future ?

What facts would support your position ?

I don't see too many positives in the Cowboys' future. Drafting expertise is questionable, as evidenced by the defensive backfield.

I look at teams that can successfully throw the ball downfield, and wonder why Dallas can't do the same. Last week Romo went about 80 yards for the winning touchdown with less than two minutes left. Why can't the Cowboys do that in the middle of the third quarter?

Play calling is the same as last year. The running game is poor, except when the team plays the Rams. Witten's career is on the decline, and his replacement is not on the team.

The defensive line is a bunch of no-names. The franchise player is sitting on the bench. Ware is running out of gas.

Optimist? No thanks.

Wilson, Kaepernick, Dalton, Foles…still young with a lot to prove (long-term), but the early returns have been decent, so QBs can be found in rounds other than the first.

It can be done.

Agree with this but we are not even trying after that A&M Qb who was afraid to throw the ball.

Yeah, but take away Aikman (no-brainer), and we've not drafted one good QB since Jerry bought the team.

That must be changed if the window can be opened again.

I've only just started reviewing players for the 2014 draft, but the guy that I find most interesting that might be available for the Cowboys is Guard Cyril Richardson (6-5, 340). He has overwhelming size and is a good enough athlete to have played LT in college. He'll probably end up going off the board before the Cowboy pick, but it's hard to know at this point in time. I'm not overly impressed with the DLinemen that project to the late 1st round.

yea but I am worried about his size #340 in college - that means to me #400 in the pros - bet he eats his way out of the pros

I rather trade back an get Gabe Jackson

Not optimistic. No reason to believe things will be different in the next 2 years that it has been over the past 10 years.

Richardson and Jackson are both listed at 340 but Richardson is about 6-5 while Jackson is 6-3. Just looking at them, Jackson appears to be more of a fat guy than Richardson.

I like the really big guys. Just a few of them has weight problems. Most do just fine when they get with a pro training staff. You can't teach size and these huge guys wear down the defensive front in a hurry.

Meh, no offense man, but as much as you like to label people as homers, you're being a Garrett homer. I have no idea why you think he's anything more than average as a coach.

So let's say in some alternate universe Sean Payton got this job a couple years ago. You seriously don't think we'd be any better? That makes no sense.

That is the easiest and most correct comparison one could make when comparing coaching quality. Easiest way to describe what fans perceive as a "good coach" and our bleh...

I have confidence in our talent evaluation and drafting...seems we are finally following a solid philosophy.
I have confidence that moving away from the 3-4 to the 4-3 will make us a better team vs. the passing NFL.

I have zero confidence in our coaching...not saying fire anyone, just saying I've been shown nothing that gives me great confidence in the guys on either side of the ball yet. Maybe Garrett will pull it together, but honestly, whenever we are in a late game dogfight, I hold my breath waiting for JG or Romo to do something stupid.

I also am confident that until we have a running game and commitment to it that keeps Romo around 30 passes per game, we are doomed.

I don't. Too early to call it either way regarding recent drafts.

I remember when people were saying Felix and Jenkins were good finds. How'd that work out? Murray was another supposedly great find...now people are saying Dallas should look for another feature back. People are quick to point out that it takes time when the results are negative, but it works both ways too.

Is this 2010? Or 2006 with the Saints giving us a beatdown? Could have sworn we were seeing the same product. Proof that this team keeps going nowhere...there is never any progression so I don't know why people should feel optimistic about "the future."

I think you have a good point. The future of this team is much like the present. This is an average team with very little hope of getting much better. The best players on this team, Romo, Ware , Witten etc are getting older and they are past their prime. They are still productive, but they have seen their better days. The core of this team simply hit it's peak and that peak was during a time when Jerry couldn't put the talent around them. I was not in favor of resigning Romo and I still feel like it is just delaying hitting rock bottom. The next two years will be just like the last couple. Average, followed by some really low years. They are not good enough to beat the good teams, and they are just good enough to win games to give a little false hope. They are stuck in average Hell, with a steep decline on it's way.

Well said

Just a small glimpse into the future.
