How do you propose we fix the offensive line and entire defense if Dak gets paid?

You guys ever see Apollo 13 when the Mission Flight Commander asked "what do we have that is good on the Space Craft?" and all the engineers were like "We'll get back to you flight....". That's pretty much the 2020 Dallas Cowboys. Apollo 13...LOL

NO it's not. The Cowboys are more than 23 million under the cap as it stands and if they let Dak walk will be over 40 million under next year. Of course no one here actually believes they are going to let him walk but they can't really franchise him again because that will make his cap hit 38 million next year when the cap is likely to go down at least in 2021. That's just bad juju. They either have to sign him to a long term deal or let him walk. They cannot do the short term thing or the franchise tag. Well I mean they could but the results would look a lot like what is causing us to throw up watching every Sunday now.

I get what your saying, and again the only reason I'm mad is they didn't really take this seriously 2 years ago like they should've. So here we are and now you are down to getting Dak to take a long year deal (which I'm hoping they can do) or letting him walk......what I'm saying is I just don't see a scenario where this team is winning a superbowl by letting Dak walk over the next 3 years. there are too many holes for a Rookie to come in and win so by the time you're ready that Rookie will now be in line for a pay raise and we will be in the same spot. the real frustrating part is every other FO seems to be able to pay the QB and put out a competent defense.....hell most franchises are paying worse QB's too much money....

@InTheZone And you forgot to mention that the cap may be as low as $175M if the revenue continues to sink.
Free agent market would collapse, squeezed by a lower cap *and* existing contracts based on projections of a higher one.

Dak will be happy to get his 38mil in that environment. If we're still happy to give it.

I heard both over the course of time. There were reports that they Cowboys had offered 25 a year and Dak's camp said no and other reports that Dak's camp had asked for 40 a year and the Cowboys said no. We will likely never know the truth.. probably somewhere in the middle. If they're in this position because of Stephen being a cheapskate with contracts then Jerry might need to take the reigns back from him. I agree with you that we stand a better chance of getting the defense fixed to where we can contend than letting Dak walk vs putting a rookie out there at QB and hoping you hit on all these defensive draft picks over the course of the next three years?

I can't call it. I don't even know what they even try to do in the draft anymore. I mean we got Diggs this year and even if he flops I have no issue with that. I actually have no issue with the Chido pick either. Its those other 2nd rounders that just look foolish.

Honestly, I would rather have Kevin King, a corner that's playing for Green Bay. That was our original intent going into the draft. But because the Cowboys was in desperate need of a DE, they decided to get Taco. Then go with Awuzie as a corner in the 2nd round. He isn't a bad player. In hindsight, if Dallas would have selected Frank Clark in the 2nd round in 2015 draft instead of Randy Gregory, we would not have a DE issue.

The Cowboys in the 2015 draft also selected Chaz Green in the 3rd round even though they needed a runningback.

Those two pick caused a butterfly effect. We took Elliott with the 4th overall pick and the next year we got Taco Charlton and the rest is history.

If the draft went the way I wish it did, we would have Ramsey, Kevin King, Frank Clark, Jay Ajayi and Derrick Henry. But that is all water under the bridge now.

That's what I said.

And our CAP in the next 3 years has been destroyed, well destroyed enough that we wont be able to afford a $35-$40m QB.

Bad year to be a FA next year unless the NFL changes the cap rules. Teams will be scrambling to get under the cap not trying to sign FAs. The long term revenue just isn't there for the NFL in my opinion.

You let Dak walk you cant pay him and have the cap space to surround him with the players he needs to be successful. You go with Dalton who will be glad to be the starter on the cheep, then you have the cap room to load up on defense.

Ok lets look at this, you pay Dalton 20 mill a year, you go out and get a pretty good defense, your still getting bounced by the Seahawks and the Packers if you even beat the eagles............if you think Dalton is going to out duel any of those QB's your mistaken...Again in his best years with REALLY good defenses he couldn't win in the playoffs.

Name one other team in the league activley looking to downgrade at QB?

Well the Cowboys arent, it's a matter of balancing what Dak wants and being able to strengthen the team.

If you say 'just pay Dak' what do you think he should be paid?

Just like every team in the league our FO is going to have to come to an agreement with our QB on what he can do and what they can do....again the part that frustrates me is you dont see other FO having this issue.....the ones who have and let the QB go dont have rings to show for the great defense they built for that cheaper QB..thats why i say that.

No one wants to hear ot because people love fantasy numbers...

But in two years....you let Cooper and Elliott go...

Smith can be cut by then, maybe Lawrence as well.

They have these guys guaranteed years and we are stuck w them.

NOT that guys like Cooper arent performing, but that money clearly need to be allocated to defense.

They can be ok by 2023 if they draft well.....and of course they tell themselves they do even though the 3rd and 4th rounders cant dress on the worst defense in history.

So...there you are. Probably not winning for quite some time. At least dont expect to.

If that is the plan I don't think it makes sense to pay Dak. Just be bad so you get a pick to draft his replacement.

Every team is given the same money to spend (ok, minor variations for carry over).

We chose to pay in 2021 -

3rd - highest paid RB
3rd - RG
4th - WR
4th - DE
7th - RT
All of those players were needed at the time, though whether they've played up to the contracts is debatable.

I was all about signing Dak but I'm starting to think the best course would be to draft a QB and use that money on the defense. The Cowboys front office made this mess and now they have to clean it up. Had they signed Dak after 2018 they could have gotten him on a $32 million a year average and they would be almost halfway through the deal now. That $2 million salary in 2019 was a huge opportunity that the Cowboys front office squandered. Now they are basically priced out of paying Dak since the franchise tag is $38 million. If they pay Dak that money there will be no help for the defense for two seasons and by the time we do get help we are likely gonna have to replace the oline.

We have this overlapping issue it seems where we wasted the prime of our offensive line with Dak, including the previous group of receivers that got tossed out as well because of Romo's situation.

Now we have all the young talented receivers you could ask for but in this time the oline has fallen apart and the defense has a bunch of brandon carrs at literally every position.

We know what Dak cant do with lesser receivers, we know what Dak still cant do with great receivers, how do we get a jump start to fixing this team within 1-2 seasons rather than hopefully building up over several seasons, by then losing whatever talent we had left at OL, RB, and possibly WR?

The offense is already stacked vs the defense in terms of cap space used, and there's no way we could expect better results on offense if those key talents are gone so what do we do?
They’re already paying Prescott more money than they would if they signed him

It’s fine you don’t sink a lot of money into him long term.
We don’t know how to evaluate talent. And our coaches suck. It’s all about scheme that’s why the patriots are still winning Without Brady. I always knew it was the coach. You have to have a system and you have to have players that fit the system and we’ve never had that. Since Jimmy
