How is this possible?

When you stop to really think about it, what kind of a name is the Commanders?

How is that even a team name? It's a blatant racial slur. It would be like calling a team the N'ers or something. It's just wrong, yet its tossed around like its nothing throughout the sporting community.

Just a thought to ponder...

If it was offensive, if would have been taken down by now. I could be wrong, but I don't really hear the American Indians uproaring over it. Or are they?

Actually, I think the Native Americans just lost a court battle. It's been going on for some time.

Hostile did a write up of the background of this a few months back. Thought it had something to do with peanuts IIRC....the Skins claimed they were named after some 'nuts' (or something) in order to downplay the racist origins of the team. I'm not 100% on this, but the story was worth digging up FWIW.

Yeah but in court I'm sure they said the peanut was the owner....

You do remember I was being sarcastic about that as the origin of the name?

Here's the thread.

It wasn't over whether the name was offensive.

Many Native american leaders have said that they view teams using Indian names ..ie Warriors. Indians, Commanders, Seminols to be honorable

No, its offensive. Important to remember "American Indians" are not a single group -- there are tons of tribes, most have more pressing local issues to deal with so a battle with a professional sports team over their name really isn't in the cards. I know several NAs we simply laugh ignorance but see the slur as relatively minor in the context of the crappy way they've been treated historically.

Some like the fighting Illini were honorable and viewed positively. But that certainly doesn't mean ALL are honorable. There is a big difference from a naming your team after a tribe vs. naming your team after a slur.

While I don't think many think of redskinned Amerindians when the name Washington Commanders comes up, it's still a slur.

Think what would happen if they tried the Washington Blackskins, Yellowskins, or Whiteskins.

At this point in time the name is not associated with Indians but scummy Foreskins.
