Same here. We always played tackle football in the neighborhood. From age 9-18 I did. I got roughed up because the highschool kids would go out of their way to tackle me hard. I was skinny until I hit the weights in middle school onward. Then let's just say they stopped doing that lol
We didn't get concussions back then. We just got our "bell rung".

Suffered a broken collarbone and compound fracture, dislocated left elbow in 1986-87. In a game. I was a DT relied on my quickness but on one play it didn't matter. I got chopp blocked and a gruesome injury listed above is what happened. I was rehabbing from that for nearly a year.

LOL.. high school kids trying to punk the younger kids is universal.. I remember when we moved to a new neighborhood over the summer when I was in 8th grade. I joined a pickup game with some kids, some of whom played for the local high school team. My introduction was on the first play of the "game" when they tossed a pitch to a kid who was a running back on the high school team coming my way.. He came around the corner and put on a bunch of moves trying to get me to bite.. I pointed my eyes at his midsection and waited for him to finish his silly moves. When he was done I put my shoulder into his midsection, picked him up and drove him into the ground. The howls from his teammates were priceless. He looked up at me in disbelief. He was shocked to find out I was only in 8th grade. I ran into him a few years later and he still remembered that play. He told me that was when he knew I was "legit." That meant a lot coming from him.. he had been a semi-legendary figure at our high school.

Man that's a great memory!. I completely understand. We moved around and I was always the new guy on the team getting tested let's say. It toughened me up and I dealt with it accordingly. Lol. I recall an int I got in a game at Hesperia high in socal. I was a freshman . I earned a ton of respect after proving myself. That was 1986. I was playing corner on that down.

I recall also when hell week was actually HELL. I also recall when we had 2 a days during that time. It made you or broke you. Morning practice afternoon practice. About 3 hours each. Brutal at times. But when we got done we knew we did something great.

I played through 91 for the San Angelo Central Bobcats under Dan Gandy. Shea Morenz was our QB who later went on to play for UT. We went 10-3-1 in 91 and lost to Killeen in the State Semi. Morenz was the hot name, but I played S on a defense that held 10 opponents to 16 points or less and we had 4 shutouts in a row. My father played for the same school and was running back for the 1966 State Championship team under coach Emory Bellard who's a Texas legend.
