I will start with the 49ers and Seattle.
IMO, first 3 picks in some order go DL, DL, OL....I want a rebuilt DL as well, but you have to continue the process (sorry, had to say it ) of continuing to build the OL...they have done very nice things in the last two years, so keep it coming on the OL
I strongly believe that if you rebuild this defensive line from scratch, that you will see an entirely different team.
I think we have quality depth on the line in players like selvie, bass, and crawford.
You give Bruce Carter another year to show up, basically because you have to. We can probably get away with starting Holloman in place of Durant.
You have in general your secondary in place. A healthy Wilcox should be better next year than he was this year. Still some hope for Johnson.
The key however is to get that high pressure defensive line. It starts with saying goodbye to ware, spencer, and hatcher.
Draft two defensive linemen early next year, maybe even three depending on how the draft shakes out.
On offense, I really do think that we just need time to come together. You release Austin, and start giving his reps to Williams and Beasley... and you're going to see more production on offense. Escobar should be much better in year two than he was in year one. I expect a night and day difference. Most importantly we need to run the football next year. We gotta hope that Dunbar can come back and his career isn't over.
We sign a couple top quality defensive linemen this year, and we'll look pretty good on defense next year.
The idea that we need to rebuild the team is a bit overblown. We need to rebuild parts of the team and take a close look at our philosophies on offense and defense, but I'd maintain the building blocks are there, and we saw it at times during the year.
We lost a lot of games this year because we just couldn't get after the QB. That needs to change wholesale next year.
Love the post but would say most of the D does need to be rebuilt. Outside of the young DL rotation guys you mentioned (Crawford/Bass/Selvie) LB/S need upgraded as well. Bring back Carter and allow open competition for the OLB spots with whatever talent or FA (cheap) is brought in. I don't like Church's speed as a modern S (4.7) but do like Wilcox who showed flashes this year. CB is the only position I see set on the D right now. I really hope the coaches/management see the reality of a young D needing some rebuilding and compensate with offensive game plans conducive to quick leads and running the ball to control TOP. The offense must flow through Dez/Murray to take the pressure off of this young D and set the tone for the team as the identity (esp Bryant). He is our only freak that can dominate a game. Innovative ways to get him the ball early must be developed (nothing so far) to take advantage of the strength of the O to cover the D.

The 49ers went 8 years in between winning records and the Hawks went 4. It didn't happen over night but don't let that stop you from bashin the Boy's.

Coach Jones does not want to rebuild. He fears his wallet will take a hit and surely his ego can't take a 2-14 season followed by a 4-12 season (an example). He would much rather put a band-aid on glaring weaknesses and hope that Romo can keep the team around .500 and maybe the ball bounces their way and they sneak into the playoffs. Coach Jones has moved all his chips to the middle of the table and by that I mean....him calling the shots, Garrett doing whatever Garrett does, and Romo leading the team. I can't see any changes in philosophy until Romo is done.
Listen to many former players, former coaches, competent NFL writers etc and they say the three most important guys in turning an NFL franchise into a winner are: GM, head coach, QB.
I dont think many can argue that we are below average with two of the three.
And I really lost interest after "competent NFL writers" since I'm not aware of any.
There's many more teams that have been stuck in that "rebuilding" process than those that have actually been successful. Lets hope we're not one of those teams.
