How many teams have been rebuilt while we maintain mediocrity?

Some teams have turned around2 or 3 times in the same time that the Cowboys have been mediocre. The difference is that most teams hit rock bottom, whether by luck or design. They get rid of their older players, draft well, get a new coach and there is the turn around.

In Dallas does just enough to stay mediocre, and refuses to rebuilt and start over. I would not mind if this off season, they get rid of the dead weight, and clear the books. Since Jerry will not cease power, perhaps bring in a consultant not named Lacewell,to help with the scouting and draft.

I don't think this team is far away from a turn around. The problem of doing just enough for next year is that by the time you fix one area this year, one are next year, and an other one the year after, by the time you think you are finished, a leak is sprung somewhere else.

Better question is how many teams have been rebuilt themselves TWICE while we maintain mediocrity.

this.

Coach Jones does not want to rebuild. He fears his wallet will take a hit and surely his ego can't take a 2-14 season followed by a 4-12 season (an example). He would much rather put a band-aid on glaring weaknesses and hope that Romo can keep the team around .500 and maybe the ball bounces their way and they sneak into the playoffs. Coach Jones has moved all his chips to the middle of the table and by that I mean....him calling the shots, Garrett doing whatever Garrett does, and Romo leading the team. I can't see any changes in philosophy until Romo is done.

Listen to many former players, former coaches, competent NFL writers etc and they say the three most important guys in turning an NFL franchise into a winner are: GM, head coach, QB.

I dont think many can argue that we are below average with two of the three
.

Well said!!!! We are WAY below average in two of those three positions. If Romo's back does not pan out we will suck at all three next year.

The 49ers went 8 years in between winning records and the Hawks went 4. It didn't happen over night but don't let that stop you from bashin the Boy's.

They also did not start winning until they hired a legit head coach that didnt need multiple years of training...................how many head coaches did they go through during these 8 years before Harbough took over?

Jerry wasted the team's good years on the Garrett experiment. I count the experiment as starting in 2007 as he's been in charge of the offense since then and actually was hired before our head coach. Jerry refuses to rebuild. He's happy with mediocrity as long as we contend in the weak NFC East. Other teams go out and rebuild. Jerry goes out and get's a player who will put on a good show. That's all it is. I can't see any progress the last 3 years. The Cowboys still find ways to lose games they should win. That's been going on since the Wade Phillips years. Meanwhile other teams that were worse than us during this time period are now finding playoff success. It's just sick.

4- You would have to bury your head in the sand to not think the Cowboys and Garrett would have had winning records without the injuries the last 2 years and Harbaugh didn't get an over the hill O-line and running back either. Had Garrett taken over the 49ers he would have done just as well as Harbaugh except he wouldn't be crying to the world that his division rivals were using drugs like cry baby Harbaugh.

Now that is funny. That may be the funniest thing I have EVER read on this forum.

I wouldn't expect you to believe that because it would mean you are wrong and your sig would look pretty stupid if it could be proven but I will remind you that the book on Garrett hasn't been finished yet and your sig could look pretty silly this time next year.

Let me put it this way, let´s assume that we can almost all agree that the most important people in a franchise (outside of a GM) are their HC and QB.

NFC West

SF – Harbaugh, Kaepernick

Sea – Carroll, Wilson

Rams – Fisher, Bradford (plus 2 picks in the first round which includes the #1 overall pick)

Cardinals – Arians, Palmer

NFC North

GB – Macarthy, Rodgers

Chi – Trestman, Cutler

Minn – TBD, TBD

Det – TBD, Stafford

NFC South

NO – Payton, Brees

Car – Rivera, Cam

TB – Lovie Smith, Glennon

Atl – Smith, Ryan

NFC East

Cowboys – Garrett, Romo ( I love Romo but he’s in his 10th year with 2 back surgeries in the last 8 months) and we have Jerry as a GM by the way.

Giants – Coughlin, Eli

Eagles – Kelly, Foles

Commanders – TBD, RGIII

AFC West

Broncos – Fox, Manning

SD – McCoy, Rivers

KC – Reid. Smith

Oak – Allen, Pryor

AFC North

Steelers – Tomlin, Ben

Bengals – Lewis, Dalton

Ravens – Harbaugh, Flacco

Browns – TBD, TBD

AFC South

Colts – Pagano, Luck

Titans – TBD, Locker

Texans – TBD, Schaub

Jaguars – Bradley, TBD

AFC East

Patriots – Belichick, Brady

Dolphins – Philbin, Tanehill

Bills – Marrone, EJ Manuel

Jets – Ryan, Geno

All I´m trying to say is that you see direction in most of the teams, either they have something going now, they did something in the past 10 years or it looks like they have a bright future, some will pan out some wont but like I said I see direction. I am really not so sure about the Cowboys, I hope Romo is as good as ever as is Ware and Witten, I hope Lee, Carter and Mo don´t get injured once again, hopefully we´ll have a good draft etc but really I am not that optimistic about the future as many teams I just mentioned seem to be, yes Romo is better than many QB´s on the list but he is also among the older ones, yes there are some great HC with an average QB (AZ) but at least you see where they are headed and of course there are teams who will start from scratch (Minn and Cle) but only the Dallas Cowboys have been stuck in neutral for the past 15 years and especially this past 4 with an awful HC.

It's just about finished for Garrett. Another year of the process should do it.

If this, and if that, Garrett would have done this, or Garrett would have done that...............I deal in facts, not hypotheticals............You are what your record says you are.................mediocre .500 coach "in training" (per team owner)

Condsidering we only really started rebuilding in 2011( going into the seasons from 2006-2010 we were considered at worst dark horse Super Bowl teams if not favorites), Carolina, Indy (sort of), Denver , KC and Seattle.

Not counting the Niners because they were done rebuilding after the 2010 season

The thread isnt about teams being rebuilt overnight (although it is possible to due over the course of an offseason or two as some have given examples). The Cowboys have been mediocre for almost 15 years now.
The Cowboys had winning records 6 out of 7 years from 03-09. The collapse happened in 2010, in which our current rebuilding efforts under Garrett started.

Bill Parcells played a big part in our demise.

he drafted a few good players in barber, newman, ware and witten.

he also drafted a bunch of losers in jones, spears carpenter,pettiti,rogers,thornton,johnson,green......etc. etc.

he also switched us from my beloved 4-3 defense.

but most of all ...he brought in all of his retreads of past days expecting them to do wonders...stubborn man he was.

the only reason we had success with him at all was because of sean and zimmer... when he benched bledsoe and gave a young romo a chance was his best coaching expertise he ever showed me.

oh he had the fear factor in his favor as well.

mainly because we still had woody and roy.

I thought Jerry Jones and Barry Switzer already proved that talent is the number one ingredient for a successful coach? Do you think Harbaugh could have made Felix Jones run the ball better or made Dez Bryant play like he does now in his first year? I have no doubt that Garrett would have been very successful with the 9ers O-line and Frank Gore and Micheal Crabtree. He would definitely be better than 8-8 if he had that team.

Well, let's see...I'd say this team started being mediocre around 2006, there were some playoff appearances in there, but nothing earth shattering obviously...

The Bengals, Seahawks, Niners, Jets, Cardinals, Chiefs, Colts, Broncos, Lions can all be called teams that have "rebuilt" and most have had more success since 2006 than Dallas.

Worst, the Steelers, Patriots, Ravens, Chargers, Packers, and Saints have all been able to maintain a similar level of success since we've been "mediocre" and all but the Chargers have won a Super Bowl.
