I'm pro player when it comes to contracts. They're in the 1 percent of the 1 percent of the population who can perform this game at this level, and deserve their share of the enormous revenue pie that the sport brings in.
But as it specifically relates to our trio, here are my thoughts:
1) Cooper is wise to try to maximize his contract demands by putting forth a huge 2019 season. He can't command nearly what he wants based on his current career statistics, in my opinion. I don't see Cooper giving the Cowboys a discount, nor do I really think he owes us one.
2) Zeke is wise to demand more money now because he's a depreciating asset. A monster 1,700-yard season could theoretically lessen his worth. He's no different than a new car driven off the lot. However -- and this is a big however -- I think he owes the Jones family for the way they've stood by him. This guy has been just short of a complete disaster off the field. It's rather amazing, not to mention disappointing, that that seems to be forgotten now that it's time to redo his contract.
3) Dak has waited his turn and has spent 3+ seasons being paid well below the level of a high-caliber starting QB. But I think he's being extremely shortsighted if his reported demands are accurate. Let's be real, Dak's value is in his ability to win and lead. In my opinion he's wiser to leave a few million on the table in hopes that that money will be turned toward a better roster, than bleeding every penny from the Cowboys now and risking a deteriorating roster. Because I don't see Dak getting a second contract from the franchise if the latter scenario plays out. Where as he could have long, lucrative career here if the talent around him remains at an acceptable level.
