How to move forward at qb?

I like Dak and think he’s a capable QB but we’re stuck in a perpetual loop it seems. At a certain point you just have to take a step back to try to take two steps forward. I know he has the NTC but I think teams like Denver and Pittsburgh would be extremely appealing to let him get a fresh start under more serious leadership and net us some picks that we could desperately use on defense. It’s not ideal because obviously you have a hole at QB but honestly this team does need to stop “hanging around the rim” and score some premium draft picks à la the Giants to replenish the roster

This isn’t an anti Dak post. I think every qb has games like last night. The difference is their defense and coaching isn’t atrocious and maybe it can help them still win.

I think Dak is a top 10 qb but like any other guy outside the top 5….one who needs help around him to win.

Reality is though. He’ll be 34 next year. With one year remaining on his deal. The window to win with him is closing… and closing fast.

In a deep qb draft….Shouldn’t we start to prepare for life after Dak? Consider drafting a guy and letting him sit for a year?
The top 5 also need help to win which is why Lamar has not won the Super Bowl and why KC missed the playoffs and why Josh Allen is basically a WC round warrior who gets popped after and why Joe Burrow has missed the playoffs multiple years in a row.

Dak is currently on pace for 4700 yards, 31 TDs, 10 INTs, 67% completion, and 97 passer rating. Right now the problem is that over the last 2 years they are the worst pass defense in the NFL, the second worst run defense in the NFL, the worst in allowing big plays, and worst in total defense. This year they are by far the worst run defense and the second worst pass defense, and 4th worst in scoring %, worst in turnover %, worst in penalties, and the only defense with 0 INTs this year. It is impossible to win that way. They are 1-10 over the past 2 years in games they score under 30. If they want to have any chance at winning they need to be 4-7.

Yeah because the draft picks they just automatically come superstars I think this team has too many holes and 34 is not old at quarterback dude seriously I mean just just first I wanna is he he's in good enough shape to play until he's 40 it's not Tony Romo who had a dad bod this guy is retransfer formed his body the way he works out his conditioning He's in great shape he he may be injury prone in urine but he's really not not in the spots you would worry about his future..

You want to buckle up I think he's going to be here three more years so this is a movement to talk about and and by the way you all can breathe a little before you think that some young rookie is just automatically comes in and fixes everything when we've seen about five or six teams in this league spend decades looking for a #1 quarterback and some of them had to go to what Go get a Matthew Stafford go get a Peyton Manning they had to go to the scrap Heat and Confederate and even right now Kirk Cousins playing very well for Raiders this is what the league is you almost have to be super lucky crazy lucky to not only have a court I followed you when you're not picking in the top five constantly and then hope they workout..

You want to hear names I'm not giving you any because there isn't I don't care how big a name somebody had in college we've seen almost 70% of them fail in the fail and usually fail in the first contract..

Realize you think this isn't that hate but it's unfortunate for you it's way too early.

Prescott has played very well the last two seasons but most of his career he has been close to top five but go ahead I'm giving you that top 10 You're not replacing him with a rookie And how long would this Rook yet you had to waste lots of assets on sit and wait and then when they get in are they the guy or did you just waste the draft pick and the time he sat and then didn't turn out to be anything..

I'm not saying they shouldn't have a plan but I just think it's too soon and just as you think what you saw in that game bad you're crazy..

You can't play football without a defense with bad special teams and then with your Continuing to turn the ball over to not properly can't pick up a blitz they can't catch football they kick it open quicken up and the blitz does come through and then the coaching you're asking for a rookie to play this mess No that's not happening but I get your point I just think it's too soon I think you're forgetting that Prescott has transformed his body his diet and his conditioning so he can play longer whether that's somewhere else or not I don't know..

I think you're looking at the age and forgetting that quarterbacks can play till they're 40 How long is Aaron Rodgers been playing Like 21 years in this league and again how old is Kirk Cousins These are starting quarterback in this league right now but there have been plenty that have been hanging on I mean how did Watson keep his job this long and yes he's playing pretty good this year but he's been terrible 4 years and yet his team didn't cut him that's what tells you about what the quarterback market looks like..

Then sometimes in a team that gets a guy and thinks they finally got a guy and then he turns out not to be guy flash in the pan first couple years and then just fall off face of the earth and then guys like Damn Darnold come back around that is a retread veteran that's what this league is It's hard to find rookie that comes in and saves the day..

The Little Dutch Boy says, "I can't just plug one hole or two." Repair the D. Josh Allen and the rest of the Top 5 couldn't sustain this team.

You don't call a plumber to cut the grass. Water from our D this year and prior:

How about Patrick Mohomes? Not saying it would definitely happen. But, if the Chiefs had the same thought process they never get him. If the Bills have the same thought process about Fitzpatrick they don’t have Josh Allen. It is an unknown. But, we know what we have now.
Sure id take that. I’d also take peak Scarlett johannsen that cooks like a southern grandma and makes a billion a year and doesn’t nag me :)

I don’t think dal is the greatest or anything but I’m being realistic. 31 other teams would love mahones, brady etc.

I’m not trying to be a jerk or anything, if we have a chance to get that guy I’m all for it. would have tried to make it work with Micah vs what we have now, so I’m with you on elite talent.

I agree it’s a dream. But, we have two options. Stick with we have (as he ages and gets worse) or use the scouting department, take a shot and put resources into the rest of the team while they see what they have. I go for the non insanity route

You know the answer. We've had two very serviceable QBs in Dak and Romo who just can't get it done. We've gone through more coaches than Lincoln went through generals. We've had great OLs and bad OLs. We've had ok, even good, defenses and horrible defenses.

What's the constant? The GM. I keep saying this: Jerry Jones the oil man would NEVER retain a field manager/land man who had this bad of a track record for even five years, let alone 30 We need a new GM. Jerry "could" own if he'd butt out. But he made clear on "America's Team" that he owns the Cowboys to have things for his FAMILY TO DO, not to win Super Bowls.

Time to move on was now, last week, last month, last year, 5 years. He should have never ever been tagged or given a second contract and even worse a 3rd contract. He was never the guy. And will never be the guy. Its time to consider Howell or Milton. Can't be any worse
All-time casual take.

Sidenote: according to a nugget I read a couple of months ago, in 2027, multiple high-level QBs could change teams.
* Burrow
* Lamar Jackson
* CJ Stroud
* Baker Mayfield
* Jalen Hurts
* Deshaun Watson
Watson is very likely.
Stroud and Jackson are possibilities. Both would be up for an extension, and I don't know if their teams want to do that. Things are slightly complicated by Jackson's no trade clause.
Jalen Hurts and Mayfield are unlikely. Any team trading for Hurts would get a QB for no cost for the next two years. Same with Baker, but only for 2027. Then be left with a boatload of dead cap in Hurts case.
Burrow. I don't see it. Maybe 2029, but not next year. Not impossible, but the trading team would be paying nothing for the QB.

The Eagles could be dangling that really friendly contract in front of any team willing to trade for him, in the hopes of getting a lot of nice picks.

I hear you, i just don’t think any qb going to be able to carry a team every game without stinkers every now and then, with a historically bad defense and a consistently outmatched coaching staff. That goes back to since parcells left. At least mccarthy had a resume.. Escaping Qb purgatory has been two miracles in a row.

Such is life as a cowboys fan!

That's the problem. Franchise QB's making $60M a year aren't paid to crap the bed.

He was the highest paid player in the league for years and still is #2.
Few weeks ago, Josh Allen finished with this stat line in a 24-16 win:

16/26, 0 TD, 2 Int and a lost fumble. Pretty much crapped the bed.

They won because his defense managed to cause turnovers and Cook ran for 154 yards.

Nothing wrong with Dak. Plus, he definitely is a top 5 QB right now. His stats prove it.

Dak is:

• #1 leading in passing yards (1,381) after 5 games.
• Tied #2 in passing TDs (9).
• Tied 3rd least in INTs (3; both interceptions against the Buccaneers were Ferguson's fault as both passes went right through both hands, only to be tipped and intercepted).
• #4 best QBR (79.2).
And?

Did you see his stats against the Bucs? Looks pretty good on paper.

That's the problem with Dak. He's a paper champion only. When it gets tough, he mentally checks out. Always has. Season 11, things aren't going to change now.
