I was looking at the official nfl depth charts to see how our front seven stacked up against other teams.
First thing I noticed was how we were getting a lot more work out of multiple defensive ends than most teams. Albeit the Patriots front 3 seems to be doing more work for them, than ours.
Ellis and Ware combine for 2.5 sacks. Our front 3 combine for 4.5 sacks.
San Diego's two outside linebackers combine for 5 sacks. While their front 3 combines for only 2.5 sacks including their back ups. Obviously we are getting to the quarterback without blitzing more than San Diego is.
New Englands front 3 combine for 5 sacks. But their linebackers are only giving them 2 sacks.
Cleveland's Willie McGinest is losing a race with our Greg Ellis. Remember we all wanted McGinest? Including me. McGinest has 0 sacks, and 4 tackles in 1 game, and is fighting injuries, while Ellis has 8 tackles and 1.5 sacks in two games. Cleveland is probably in the middle of what we had last year and what we have now in terms of being full immersed in the 3-4 with proper personnel. The combination of Wimbley and McGinest when he is healthy is going to be a good combo. Statistically they don't seem to be getting much out of their front 3. As ours seems to be better on paper. Oshinowo hasn't even played yet.
Our front seven is also outplaying the steelers, although their middle linebackers seem to be more productive so far.
I definitely think our front seven is playing pretty decently, but obviously they're going to need to step it up a bit. If this defense is going to be as dominating as we thought it would be. And it needs to start creating more turn overs.
