We already have an extra 6th from the Eagles draft day trade. Do you think Hunter is higher the a 6th?

This was prolly one of the trade scenarios that was being tossed around earlier this offseason.

Good luck to him.

Edit: After thinking about it, if they're trading for a pick and he was drafted in the fifth, then it's not that much of a loss if we get a 6th or 7th for him.

What sucks is yet another player from the 2002 draft is out the door. But at least he does have some talent and will still be in the league. He should prosper in NY.

Hunter expects to be traded to Jets today
Cowboys cornerback needs to pass physical for deal to go through

03:19 AM CDT on Thursday, July 14, 2005

By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – Cornerback Pete Hunter said he hopes to be a member of the New York Jets by the end of today.

Hunter, who flew to New York on Wednesday, is expected to meet with Jets officials and take a physical today. If he passes the physical, Hunter said he expects to be traded to the Jets and given a chance to compete for the starting job.

Dallas will probably receive a late-round draft choice for Hunter.

The Cowboys could not be reached for comment

"I'm excited about the opportunity to be on the field," said Hunter, who has three career interceptions, "and I'm happy about having a chance to come home and play and all of the good stuff that comes with that."

Hunter, a native of Atlantic City, N.J., was a fifth-round selection in 2002. He won the starting job in training camp last season after Mario Edwards signed a free-agent deal with Tampa Bay. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the third game against Washington and did not play again.

Hunter became upset with the Cowboys in March, when they signed free-agent cornerback Anthony Henry and gave him a $10 million signing bonus. The Cowboys wanted Hunter to consider moving to free safety, where he could compete for a starting job, but he balked.

Hunter, a restricted free agent, didn't get any nibbles in free agency and signed a one-year tender with the club for the minimum salary of $655,000. He participated in the club's off-season program and its three-day minicamp.

The Cowboys were expected to use Hunter at free safety in the dime defense, which uses six defensive backs.

If Hunter is traded to the Jets, then Keith Davis, Izell Reese and Lynn Scott will compete for playing time in the nickel and dime defenses.

Supplemental draft today: The NFL's supplemental draft is today, but the Cowboys aren't expected to make any selections. Two of the more attractive players are USC defensive tackle Manuel Wright and ex-Clemson receiver Roscoe Crosby.

Staff Writer Todd Archer contributed to this report.

I hate to give up on a CB with his size & speed, but the writing was on the wall with both the Henry & Glenn signings...

I just liked him better then the other smallish 5-9ish CB's...

What happened to the truism that you can never have enough CBs? Hunter is good insurance in case Glenn fades or is injured. I hope Bill is right in assuming Reeves and or Frazier will be ready.

Well at CB we've got the following folks:

Newman
A. Glenn
A. Henry
Lenny Williams
Lance Frazier
Nathan Jones
Pete Hunter (soon to be traded)
Bruce Thornton

So take out Hunter and we still have four guys battling for at least 2 spots. I think we'll keep at least 5, but 6 sounds likely. I think we've got enuff candidates.

Hunter is prolly more talented than the four guys battling, but if he doesn't want to be here cuz he wants to at least sniff the field. Any four-year pro should want that, then I think we should get whatever we can for him and move on.

What do you mean "will be" ready. Heck Frazier was ready last year. I thought he played well considering their was no pass rush and our free safeties were just ****.

We have some nice depth at corner... even without Hunter. It gives Thornton or Jones a chance to stick because I think we go with 6 corners.

Newman
Henry
Glenn
Frazier
and pick 2 out of Thornton, Jones and Reeves.

We need our 4th back next year (gave it up for Canty).

I really think Ralph "Pete" Hunter can play. He might not start right away for the Jets, but he'll contribute eventually. He's one of the guys I've really been pulling for since the Hard Knocks show.

I'm glad we're getting something for him.

Good Call! Explains the timing. That ought to freak Houston out enough to use a 1st or 2nd round pick on Roscoe Crosby.

I don't think there is a significant difference between Hunter and the other corners we have.

No team in the NFL goes four deep.

Our fourth cornerback needs to be able to do something besides play corner.

Can Hunter return punts like Frazier? No.

Can Hunter return kicks like Reeves and Nate Jones. No.

Now if he would play safety, that changes things. He turned down that opportunity.

He bought his own ticket out of town when he balked at playing safety.

Good riddance and thank goodness we got a draft choice. I just hope it is not conditional.

I don't see how this comes into play. He's being traded. He's not signing as a FA. Get a grip.

I agree Hollywood. I wished we could have used him at FS or worked him in some how. I too hate to see talent go away but it is what it is. On the other hand, he's going to a good situation for him. Herm Edwards is an excellent defensive coach, especially DBs. Edwards, himself a decent NFL DB with size, understands how to use big DBs in defensive schemes. He's a players coach and I think he will be able to relate a bit better to Hunter. Time will tell but this might be a blessing in disgues for Hunter.

I wish him well.

Losing a pick is what happens when the NFL punishes teams. Losing a pick means you don't get anything for it. We wouldn't lose a pick by drafting Crosby. We just spent it a year early.

Besides, the "we don't have enough picks next year" excuse is bogus. We have two 6th round picks. If we trade Hunter we'll have another Day 2 pick. We'll have more Day 2 picks than normal. I'm hoping by the time the 2006 draft rolls around we'll have reached a level talent-wise where late round picks have a difficult time making the club.

As far as Hunter goes, I don't think this really had anything to do with "being in the doghouse". We had a log jam at the position and he's a free agent after this year who wasn't going to be resigned. As far as reserves go, its better to keep a Thornton or a Frazier who could play several more years with the team. Hunter is going to be a good fit in NYJ. He needs to be a Cover 2 cornerback, especially since he doesn't want to play FS. He doesn't have skills for man-to-man.

Sounds like the same regrets that people had over Antonio Bryant, Derrick Ross and others.

If they are so good, why is Coach Parcells getting rid of them? All of them?

We might as well get used to the idea that we're going to be getting rid of some players that we like... we just have too much new talent to keep all of them.

Try putting together a 53 man roster and you'll quickly see there are some tough decisions to be made. We're going to be cutting some players that can play in this league... and frankly, it's about time we we're in that position.

IMO Parcells liked Frazier a lot. Liked his spunk and his ability to play special teams.

That means we have:

Newman
Henry
Glenn
Frazier

From there we likely only have one spot for:

Jones
Reeves
Thornton
Hunter

I think the coaches liked what they saw from Thornton before the injury and he was a higher draft choice than Hunter and taken more recently than Hunter. No surprise that he was kept over Pete. Plus his trade value was low because no other teams have been able to see what he can do.

Jones and Reeves haven't had the chance to show what they can do yet eiter and were picked by Parcells, so they stay.

The trade makes sense really.
