A 24 year old undrafted rookie free agent last season who started 2 games?

Maybe we will get lucky and the Dolphins will be willing to trade Neville Gallimore.

Broaddus attempting to use logic has worse results than if they signed me replace Zack Martin...

Make it a general question, not specific to the Cowboys...

If a quality NFL GM tried to trade an unproven 2nd year UDFA OLineman for a draft pick, what would they get?

Now, if a quality NFL GM had a good young DT, what draft pick would they take for that player?

Answers:
Another team would want at least a mid-round pick for a good young DT. They won't get it because he is unproven; therefore, they would just keep him.

Any team could have signed Bass last year as a UDFA. What has he done to elevate himself to mid-round pick value? He looked ok in 2 starts, but many players have done that without really proving anything long term.
Exactly. This fan base always overestimates the trade value of its own players.

If you're weeks into camp and you feel good about the rookie OL are you willing to trade T.J. Bass (who Broaddus believes the league missed on and should have been drafted) for DL depth and DT in particular?
No. The investment at DT needs to be higher to get a better player in return. We've seen our fair share of journeymen. We need impact players.

Bass would get us a DT like what we drafted in the seventh and little more

The question isn't are you just willing though. It's are you taking the initiative and calling around the league looking to move Bass for a DT?
That question wasn't part of the OP, but Zimmerman and McClay could actually evaluate a suitable trading partner.
We could be in a position to make such a move.

He said comparable, so I'd say a reserve DT.

Answer for me is still no. OL is too valuable and if you have a guy who can play you keep em.
Here is the problem when we are talking about our big boys, OL do themselves zero favors when they are sitting on the bench and standing on the sidelines.
Only so many reps to go around and know that OL only become relevant when they are active and getting the reps, so take this into consideration if you feel you might be a little deep at the position.
Sounds crazy but its true, trust me... lol

Yeah I trade Martin while he still has some value. We aren’t contending this year anyway.
Trade Martin........

Why don't you just trade the metal statue of that old man wearing a hat in front of AT&T stadium? ;)

I could understand not resigning him. However, trading off one of the best O-linemen in Cowboys history.... a sure fire HOFer......for the second to last 6th round pick or something like that? He'll never deserve to go that way.

He will always be part of the Cowboys family. Would you trade your family pet because she turned 10 years old and was a little slower bringing your slippers (A rather impressive feat for a bearded dragon, by the way)

My greatest regret is that this guy dedicated himself to be the best for so many years as a Cowboy and didn't come away with a ring. He would be the last person to fault for that.

Sorry I went old school. In the olden days, fans would develop emotional ties with the players, like they were extended family. These relationships typically lasted over 10 years, the days before salary caps and free agency turned them all into well paid mercenaries. Zack Martin is just one of those old school type players.

Now....if we could get a 2nd rounder for him.........:)........just kidding Zack!

Seem to me-good starting level offensive lineman are harder to acquire than defensive lineman- so any trade would need to have that value added in! I would keep bass and sing campbell or Linville-

Na, sounds like a player, Martin may not be around much longer and Bass could man that spot after he leaves.

This was a Broaddus question that I think is interesting.

If you're weeks into camp and you feel good about the rookie OL are you willing to trade T.J. Bass (who Broaddus believes the league missed on and should have been drafted) for DL depth and DT in particular?

I guess the obvious answer is it depends on who that DL is, so let me tweak it. If you feel good about those rookies weeks into camp are you looking to trade Bass for a comparable DT?
No! Last time we made this type desperation move for a position we traded Charvvarius Ward for some OL that never played. Sign C Campbell and let the chips fall!

I get your post. But in 21st Century CAP era, trading Martin (before considering trading Bass) in a year that we're not necessarily competing, and getting back a piece that we like and will perform in 2025 is EXACTLY what the FO should be doing.

Unfortunately, not trading Martin.....is tantamount to supporting Jerry's strategy of: holding on to veterans (in declining years) , in a vain hope to try and compete every year.

Martin, a brilliant HOF servant and im sure some ALL-IN, 2024, team will still part with something of (projectable) value.

Undervaluing the depth of the OL is a big mistake. Do not rob Peter to pay Paul.

I get that this is as business but iI would think that there is a special group of guys that get some additional consideration. I think a 9 time Pro Bowl, 7 time 1st tam All Pro would have earned that consideration.

Zack represented the team well as player and would continue to do so as a Hall of Famer....unless they did something to tick him off. Would we want to hear that speech at the Hall of Fame?

"And to Jerry and the Cowboys, let me say, I gave you a decade of All Pro level play and when I slowed down a fraction of a second, you sold me like a side of beef. Thanks for being a class organization, Cowboys....yeah....go take a hike!"

Seriously, I don't think it would go down like that. I think they would work with him as far as a trade partner. I don't think they would trade him if he didn't want to go.

The Cowboys need Zack anyway. Where else are you going to find the veteran leadership on this team's offensive line? He needs to demonstrate the proper work ethic for three rookie draft picks, two of which will be starting.

Bass may be the RG starter once Zack is gone...so no freaking way. Get your rotational DL some other way.
Agree, like Free Agency...........oh wait, our previous Hankins acquisition was our one per decade.

You could make that argument (to a greater or lesser degree) on most players post rookie contract. In a way it's living in a loyalty based world, that no longer exists. Indeed, i'd say Jerry frequents that world, and I maintain that part of the Dak scenario is based on Jerry wanting a Home Town Discount after giving into his last contract (especially length and NTC and Franchise Tag).

Indeed, didnt Zack get a revised contract last year after he 'held out'.

This loyalty thing, goes hand in hand with the Jerry not being a good GM/Owner.

Just when I start giving Bryan Broaddus some love, the old Broaddus pops up with his ridiculous takes. He knows how important it is to keep the best Oline (starters and backups) since every year we suffer Oline injuries or setbacks. No way in Hades should the Cowboys consider trading TJ Bass. Cowboys got lucky signing him as an undrafted player. You don't get this lucky that often at all.
