Not sure why the OP thinks this is some ground breaking info

This is the same case w every single franchised player every year

Everybody already knows all of this

Apparently they don't. LOL. Many posters on this forum seem to think that 31 other teams are going to line up and pay Dez Calvin Johnson money and give up two first round picks to do it. I'm not saying it won't happen .... but I have my doubts about it.

I don't know why you referenced a 1st and 4th. It requires 2 1sts.

Maybe he is thinking about the intermediate tag on Dez which IIRC is a first and a third??? I don't see us tendering Dez at anything but the highest level.

Won't happen at all

When is the last time a franchised player was traded?

Maybe not but it would get them to the playoffs. Then you never know what happens.

Why would they sign Dez? They don't have the cap money available to keep J. Thomas and he could be signed for a lot less than Dez, and they don't have to give up two draft picks to do it. :) I agree it could happen, but I can't imagine Denver doing that.

Well, its not really a trade, but your point is well made.

Well, a franchise player can be traded for less than 2 firsts

Nobody is giving up 2 firsts and he isn't being traded either

He can sign it after week 10 and get 13 million in his pocket.

Surely thats not correct, do you have a source on this claim? No offense intended with my question, I just think its absurd if a player can do this

Don't understand why everyone is saying this. Dallas was 12-4 last year. They want to build on this. Dez doesn't have to play the first 10 games.

There was another player who held out and Dallas went 0-2.

Romo & Witten aren't going to play forever.

Jenky, keep in mind this sort of thinking was what got the Cowboys in the cap hell ditch that they were in for several years. The team doesn't seem to operate like that anymore.

Do any of you think that Calvin Johnson would have received his historically large contract if he had to be flanked by a team-hired babysitter full time? I think most reasonable minded people would say no.

That is wrong. LOL. Don't get too excited about it. :)

That's the funniest part. Everyone complained they over paid everyone, now they complain if they wont.

Let me get this straight. We put the tag on him, and someone is going to take him from us? That scenario is about as realistic as the browns winning a superbowl

Franchises are traded somewhat regularly in the NFL. Probably no one will straight up take him from us (but it has happened before) but we could tag him and look to trade him for a first and third or whatever. While I don't want "the drop" to be his last play in Dallas... I somewhat have to wonder what we could do with a 1st, a 3rd (for example), and $13,000,000.

I think almost all of us want Dez back in big way.

But to look at it from the team's view...over last two seasons--his two best--he was great but did not dominate the league in receptions or receiving yards.

In 2013:
8th in receptions
13th in rec yards

In 2014:
12 in receptions
8th in rec yard

What he has been amazing in is TDs...leading the league this year and tied for 3rd the year before.

But just remember that every year Romo has been QB, Dallas had had a player near the top of the league in TDs. Every single year.
That includes players like Laurent Robinson (never to be heard from again when he left) and Miles Austin (older but also JAG when he left)

Just pointing out the other side...don't take it as if I'm criticizing Dez. I love having him as a Cowboy.

Good post. We fans always tend to rate our own higher than what they actually are.

I honestly just cant wait for this situation to be over. He is going to be signed. Period lol. Jerry isnt making a mistake like that again "MOSS". They gave him the 88 for a reason boys and girls. He is staying put. One thing that worries me is Im hoping he isnt blaming the cowboys about this Video nonsense now. Because that would be a baddddd thing

Let's suppose hypothetically that Dez' demands are just too rich for the Cowboys, or that there is some damning info on Dez that hasn't been made public yet. Let's also suppose that the Cowboys' aren't hell bent on keeping Dez like everyone thinks they are.

Instead of even trying to lock up Dez long term they just franchse Dez having no intention of resigning him at all. (I know that goes against conventional wisdom). Personally I'm not sure that it is that far fetched if you consider why would the Cowboys pay top 5 receiver money to someone who they have to baby-sit with full time staff hired by the Cowboys off the field.

In that scenario, Dez would either play under the franchise tag, with Dez bearing all the risk of loss due to injury (other than the remainder of the franchise tag year). So in that case the Cowboys' risk of loss is no worse than the Spencer situation.

If another team were to come in and steal Dez then they would have to come in and pay Dez out the *** and take on Dez (with his baby sitting albatross, and carry the risk of loss due to potential injury to Dez going forward) AND ADDITIONALLY GIVE UP TWO...LET ME REPEAT TWO FIRST ROUND PICKS as the cost of doing business to do it. In doing that the new team gives up two low cost first round players for FIVE YEARS, and takes on Dez' huge cap hit.

So if the Cowboys lost Dez, they could potentially draft a first round receiver with this year's pick AND draft a first round receiver next year as well with the other first round pick, at the low end rookie wage scale.

Let that soak in for a moment......we could sign Suh or any other defensive player we want if Dez bolts for the same cap hit AND still get two first round picks to boot to offset the cost of the free agent signing. Maybe if Dez goes it is not the end of the world after all.

This is one more reason why the Cowboys have all the leverage in these negotiations.

Imagine if Philly trades #20 and next year's 1st to move up and draft Mariota.
They trade Foles to HOU for next year's 1st rounder
They then sign Dez to an offer after the Draft, 6/88m
They owe Dallas their 2017 and 2018 1st rounders.
