With Jermaine Johnson, I am wondering if the league knows something about him that we don't. His tape + measurables + Senior Bowl (literally dropping out on Tuesday because he already beat every OLman there) all justify a much higher pick than #29.

Passing up on Linderbaum though.... I don't know man. He's the best center in several draft classes. If you want OL help, I would much rather roll with an interior OL combination of McGovern + Linderbaum than Tyler Smith + Biadasz.

The Cowboys are usually good about scooping up big-school BPA types that fall into their lap. Passing on one just to take a small-school project player at a low-value position is uncharacteristic and getting way too cute.
 
I still would've been happier had they taken Johnson and waited until the 2nd and drafted Goedeke or Pahram but I'm mostly over it. Time to look to the 2nd and 3rd rounds which is what I was more excited about anyway.

Which highlights the issue at DE. If you have to move your best LB to get a pass rush, you have a defensive end problem.

I agree, but LG is the more urgent need.

Still some talented EDGE players available.

Sam Williams in the 3rd or Amare Barno in 4th is still doable.

And they are both true weakside pass rushers with excellent length and run 4.4 or better.

Still some very good OG prospects available too.

I take the more talented player. Johnson was that for me. I think the Cowboys kind of went Taco here. They pigeon holed themselves into needing a OL high just like they needed a DE a few years ago. In both cases they passed on more talented players (at least IMO) because they had to fill a certain position.

Hopefully this ends better than that experiment. Smith is raw but has upside. Also, in fairness, I am always a sucker for DEs. I think they are arguably the most important position in football outside the QB. The ability to suffocate a QB can cover a lot of team flaws.

And I'm strictly talking about potential.

Tyler Smith has the best upside at TWO positions.
 
Must be something up with Jermaine Johnson. Hearing Personality might be a problem. So im curious why the Cowboys didnt land him lol.

No team needed a pass rusher in the draft more then the Ravens and they passed on Johnson. Something is up. Probably the Bossman effect.

They won’t, but they need to be aggressive and move up for DE they like be it Sam Williams, Ebiketie, et cetera, because there’s gonna be a run.

I will say this has the potential for blowing up in true Cowboys fashion. They picked a player that clearly needs development despite the fact we have glaring need for a starter at LG now. The hubris of the Jones know no bounds and they do not learn. This is the same group that thought they could trot out Deonte Thompson and Allen Hurns as starting receivers.

This guy ain’t Larry Allen Part II as some have laughably suggested. I like his demeanor but way too excited over him throwing guys to the ground rather than his actual ability to play the position.

Also, it’s worth mentioning Joe Philbin probably had a lot of input in evaluating this player. FWIW, Broaddus has been consistently saying Philbin was not a fan of McGovern who was a “scouts’ pick.”

My Problem is I'm not sure Philbin is the best OL coach.
He had Williams (2nd round pick) and McGovern (3rd) and couldn't do much with either.
Additionally Collins regressed as well, so I'm not hopeful.

It does have potential to blow up in our faces. And again, this is the consequence of doing jack **** in free agency to address your glaring needs. And pretending you will 'build thru the draft' but then not being aggressive there either

We HAD to get a guard and got the last one left. Not ready to play? Who cares! We got one. Just like we HAVE to get a De and will force that pick too.

Meanwhile positions that also need improvement will be neglected, again.

Philbin wasn’t here when McGovern was drafted. Garrett era.

But Steele stepped up and McGovern did well vs Tampa in season opener
