Lets say we sign Zeke to a new 5 year contract...…...2 or 3 years from now, Barkley gets a new market setting contract for a RB, but Zeke still leads the league in rushing every season.
Is Zeke going to say, "that's not fair, I had more yards rushing than Barkley so I need to make more than him" so Zeke holds out again before his contract is up demanding "renegotiation".
Whats to keep Zeke from doing this?
Serious Question.
I was gonna say you can write a contract to prevent it, but really, without trust you can't have a business deal this large.
It's not like the problem of future holdouts is fresh and shiny new for Jerry. It's always *theoretically* a problem, but with basic goodwill and trust, you make the deal anyway.
"How can I trust you to follow through on the deal?" It appears to be an issue for Jerry *with Zeke*.
That's saying "I don't trust you", therefore "I can't make a deal with you". I don't know. Maybe Jerry is just trying to put the fear of a retracted contract into the mind of Zeke's agent.
But moving the "negotiation" from performance to trust is a huge escalation. Not the kind the other guy can really answer. It's more like rhetoric you break out to rationalize not making a deal.
That's kind of crossing the Rubicon.
