and San Diegos Defense in all aspects wasnt much better than ours last year.Just look at nfl.com stats page. They actually allowed a good deal of points. The offense is what made them 14-2.Maybe Wades style will work with us better.

They put up a lot of impressive statistical numbers, TFLs and/or Traps but they also give up a lot of big plays. Last year, they were a very respectable 7th in scoring defense. The year before, 13th and in 04, 11th.

Couple of points:

Our DB's are better than SD are/were.
We don't play in the Toughest Division in Football
Their D did have a few bad games, when Mr. Roids was out and gave up a lot of points.
It is a D that will give up some points on occassion. That's the way it is, you blitz and you will give up some plays.

But, overall, I would say that SD D was a lot more consistant, esp down the stretch in Dec, than ours was,, (maybe the understatement of the year). This D will be more aggressive than last year which means the O will have to be more aggressive as well. I like our chances.

I think we have a better secondary than did SD granted the stats may or may not show that but given the fact that Dallas has not been able to establish a consistent rush our DB have been at somewhat of a disadvantage. One concern I do have with the new defense is the ability to stop the run. Guys still have to read run or pass and not just pin their ears back to go after the QB. If we do that then the offense will be able to use are aggressiveness against us. I will say I'm excited to see what Phillips brings to this team and looking forward to the start of the season.

I think San Diego has a better DL and had a better LB group last year than we do...

We have them beat in the secondary.

Wade's coached defenses at a lot of places other than San Diego, you know. His track record over many years is pretty hard to argue with.

Besides... He was the best that was out there. I mean, we could have had Norv.

(Thank you God for letting us dodge that bullet.)

San Diego's defense was clearly better than ours was last year. I think they gave up 50 fewer points.

Having said that, they did have a stretch where they gave up 27, 24, 25, 41 and 27. That's pretty rough. They were not what I consider a dominant bunch.

I think the over aggressiveness can hurt sometimes, just really hope our O is really putting up points big time.

I have to disagree. To me the stats are not as close as people make them out to be.

For example there is 21.2 yards per game difference in yards allowed in San Diego's favor.

Sounds like no big deal, but if you go see how many spots up or down you would move in the rankings with "just" a 21.2 yards per game difference you would see that it is indeed a big deal.

How about three points per game difference in San Diego's favor. Three points difference in either direction will dramatically change your ranking. If Dallas had been three points per game worse than they were last year they would have been tied for 3rd worst in the league. Conversely if San Diego had been 3 points per game better they ended up they would have been tied for 3rd best in the league.

The difference in rushing yardage is only 2.9 yards. If you go 2.9 yards in either direction there will not be a huge jump. So in terms of rushing yardage the are pretty close.

There was a 18.3 yards per game difference between passing yards allowed in San Diego's favor. Same holds true here. Eighteen yards difference in either direction will have a great impact on your ranking.

No need to even bother looking at sacks that is not even close.

If you take a closer look at final season ending stats you will see San Diego was significantly better statistically than Dallas except for rushing yardage allowed where San Diego was only slightly better.

You can't discount the difference between 61 and 34 sacks. Sacks are drive stoppers and emotional/momentum lifters. Also, SD played with alot of leads in blowouts. The entered the season with a QB not having thrown an NFL pass and an average secondary and WR's.

I don't know that that's the point at all.

It goes back to people expecting some big drastic improvement over last year, when in reality SD's overall defense wasn't much better than Dallas.

You can't take away stats, but the last 4-5 games of the season significantly skewed Dallas' final numbers. Dallas could very well have ended up better than them.

Yeah SD may have better personnel in some areas than Dallas has and vice versa, but I don't just expect as big a jump and others. I just want consistency and a strong finish.

They gave up big plays in the passing game, not hte running game. That can be corrected with better secondary coverage. If Hamlin (sp?) pans out a FS and we have a true QB in the secondary who can cover, then we'll be lights-out better than SD in the secondary. That's because we already have 2 CBs who can cover man-to-man and do it well. So with 2 capable CBs and a true FS, with Roy in the box, we can be dominating.

By hte way, this was the case with the 90s defense. Dallas would turn the front 4 loose putting pressure on the secondary to cover man-up, and they were so good at it (Kevin Smith and Larry Brown - and Deion after Kevin Smith) that they were just ball hawks back there. Woodson was also left to cheat up to the line of scrimmage, and it was good coverage-FSs like Thomas Everett - and James "Drive-by" Washington after Everett - that allowed for Woodson to be tuurned loose up front.

Forget the stats and forget the predictions.

This defense may not be a HUGE improvement over what we saw for the majority of last season... but it sure as heck will be A LOT MORE FUN TO WATCH!!!!

I won't have to sit there just getting seriously ticked off because we're so predictable and bland that its just boring to watch and boring for our players.

San Diego gave up alot of big plays, but they also had alot of sacks and countless pressures on the quarterback... That is the nature of how they play as we will play.. if you go after the big play you will give up the play ocassionally as well.

Wade is smart enough to know that a square peg cannot fit into a round hole; if we can't run the same plays because of personell limitations he will work it out and finagle it.

We have a better secondary but that is all relative; they have a much better D-line, and I think the jury should still be out on the LB core.

I agree. Letting QBs like Manning sit back in the pocket and shred you is ridiculous. I can name a bunch of QBs who were having horrible stretches until they came up against our defense. Eli and Vick to name two. In fact, if it weren't for Keyshawns drop, how bad would the slide at the end of the season have been.

All i will say is....the games we were aggressive in....some of them if not most of them we won....and it was a hell of alot fun watching....

For example....Colts last year.....yeah we had to aggressive on Offense because we were so aggressive Defensively...but hey we won and it was fun....and our D had a nice day

Another example....The eagles 2 seasons ago....with Drew...when we blew them out....Aggressive Blitzing D on Mcnabb....Press coverage....Corners on an island...and we did great!

I just know it will be way more fun to watch our D this year....Everyone doing what they love to do...no one holding them back because of insecurity and trust...and with the secondary we have? oh man!
