dasch what was meant was that soccer is a cheap sport to play. VS full tackle football. Most of the world could not afford it anyway. I do happen to think that is one reason why soccer is so popular.

in my opinion you can make the same comparisons between the two in that regard though. ok you need the padding etc when you're playing competitively but genuine question as obviously i never grew up over there, if you're at the park with friends when you're young do you play with pads? once you start playing more seriously with soccer you then have to buy boots, kits, shinpads, pay for pitch hire and depending on how serious you are pay for a referee. i'm not saying you're spending hundreds of pounds, although if you want you can pay a couple of hundred for a pair of boots, but its not the cheapest activity in the world.
i've heard stories of players who grew up kicking a rolled up newspaper off a wall etc but i'm sure not every player in the nfl was born with a silver spoon in their mouth?
anyway i'm not trying to get into an argument over which is the better game. i am always going to prefer soccer but i also enjoy watching american football and as i learn more about it i enjoy it all the more.

Football is great but let's not kid ourselves, it's a game.

It's entertainment- a 3 hour vacation from life's regularity.

But it really has no bearing on anything important...

I got married on a Saturday before a Cardinals game so I had 2 reasons to celebrate that Sunday. Oh boy did I celebrate. Cowboys won 41-10 and we never got dressed all day.

I'm surprised none of the soccer fans loved my FINAL JEOPARDY video. :(

This thread reminds me of Roy Williams. He said he wanted to play something like 5 years, and he had always made remarks that made me question whether he really wanted to play the game or not. He gave us that answer.

I have played a lot of football in my time and I love the sport. That said, I have not encouraged my two boys to play as several knee surgeries, shoulder surgeries and a future knee replacement have me rethinking the cost of football.

20 years ago, if you had asked me what i felt about this game i would have told you that it was stupid, it was just about a bunch of over-sized muscle heads trying to to beat each other up but too chicken to do it without helmets and pads like rugby players.

I grew up in a different place where other sports provoked emotions and passion similar to those expressed by Hos in the original post. I didn't have the exposure to football until i came to the US in the late 1980s. For the first few years, i couldn't understand the game, it didn't appear to have an rules, strategy or reason. As far as i was concerned, you either threw the ball or gave it to someone to run with it while smaller guys run around like crazy or/and the bigger guys slammed their bodies against each other. It all took half a minute or less and then they stopped and took a break, sometimes for a few seconds and other times for a couple of minutes and then came back and did the same thing again. There was a lot i didn't understand about the game.

It wasn't until the early 1990's that I really started to learn about the game. I lived and bartended in the Dallas area, and the excitement and passion about the team called the Dallas Cowboys was in the air. That's all everybody at the bar wanted to watch and ever wanted to talk about. I slowly started to learn about the game, thanks to my regular clientele, although at times irritated, nevertheless had the patience to take the time to explain some of the nuances about the game and educate me about the league in general. Most of all it was my best friend, who was born and raised in the Dallas area and is the biggest fan i know, who really taught me most of what i know about the game. We watched games together and he would explain to me about the different positions and their responsibilities, different offensive and defensive schemes, etc....

I don't remember when it first happened or if it happened gradually but at some point in the last 15 years, my Sunday's became off limits to friends and family members who weren't into the game. I started reading about the cowboys on a daily basis. I joined this forum five years ago and started lurking to picking up whatever information i could about the game. I started following the draft and looking at mock drafts on a yearly basis. In sum, i became totally consumed with the sport.

My wife, who is an American, came from a family that didn't watch a lot of sports, or TV in general. But right off the bat she knew about my passion about this sport the the other that should remain nameless;). During football season, the days the Boys play is out of the question in regards to doing things together unless its watching the game. Sundays and Monday nights, as well as Thursday and Saturday evenings later in the season are also doubtful unless it is something extremely important. I love her to death for understanding.

I can't speak about this sport from the perspective of someone who grew up with it and/or who has played it. With the exception of a few games of flag football with my buddies, i've never played it for real. That doesn't stop me from fantasizing about the different positions i could have played or would have liked to play though. I still have a lot to learn about the game and this forum has taught me more than i ever imagined.

Anyway, I loved hearing about your passion for the game Hos (and others), it's that kind of passion for the game which i saw in my best friend and people around me that attracted me to the game and drove me to learn about it. I never thought i would feel this passionately about a sport that i didn't grow up with nor did i think, when i first started to learn about it, that it would arouse similar kinds of emotions and passion to those sports that i grew up with.

I love this game.

I loved this thread early this morning and hate it now.

Thank you to those who liked the post.

While I didn't agree necassarily with what you were saying I did enjoy your first post Hos. I appreciate the effort and I'm sorry for my part in it being ruined by an argument with another person.

There will no longer be any arguments between me and lew in this thread, or any others, and again i'm sorry for my part in ruining your topic.

My dad used to be a truck driver and he had these old Justin Wilson cassettes. Well on one of them, it had a skit about a football game.

I cant fully remember, but it was something about the backup Quarterback and so forth. It was hilarious....

They were like on the goalline, and on 4th down, cause the coach had told him no matter what on 4th down to punt the hell out of the ball, the QB did so.....

I wish i could find that skit again....its a riot.

I suppose I owe an apology as well....................

The very thing that upset me and disturbed me (bringing soccer up), I allowed to get me caught up into the fray. Thereby extending the whole "soccer" thing.

I should've just ignored it rather than perpetuating the discussion and adding flame to an already unfortunate fire....................

My apologies Hos.

Dasch, a good helmet alone costs more then anything a soccer player needs.
Shoulder pads are not cheap either. Nor are the hip pads or the shoes.
Sorry, your arguement sinks like the titanic.

Soccer is boring. If you are able to find excitement in it, than good for you. I cannot sit there and watch it game in and game out. It is cumbersome and mundaine (spelling).

I only get interested when Team USA plays....and it has nothing to do with Soccer....it has more to do with me rooting on my national team.

I hate gymnastics, but during the Olympics, you can darn sure bet I will be rooting on Team USA....the same goes for Swimming and other lame sports.

It's all good man. My appologies to you as well. I just got caught up in it and I shouldn't have continued with it either.

My bad.
