Defense looks good. Quinn has earned my trust. But this offense? Man, there are just too many question marks to feel good heading into this season:

1. Questionable OL depth, and now Zack Martin drama

2. Questionable RB depth behind Pollard who has questions about carrying a full time load and recovering from an injury

3. Gallup has questions about his recovery from last year

4. Questionable WR depth behind Lamb and Cooks

5. No proven TE1 and a gimpy 2nd round TE with plenty of questions

6. New offensive scheme and play-caller who ended with huge question marks his last couple years in that role

7. Nothing but questions at kicker

8. Big questions around Dak bouncing back from last year, and being able to deliver in big moments

Every year there are a few questions— but damn, there are too many for me to feel anything but uneasy as we roll towards Sept
Well we know from watching the great defenses of the past that they can shut down a high-powered offense. It looks like our defense this year will be lights out. I'm not too worried about what our offense looks like going up against them and a coordinator that knows our offense better than anyone else.

A few thoughts.

As for #2, I think it takes care of itself if Martin is back and the line stays relatively healthy. I would like another vet in here and maybe they'll take a look at the cuts that eventually come. But I am not too worried............. yet.

#3, I think Gallup will be fine. It's really not that uncommon for a guy to take almost a full season to find himself after a major leg injury. Camp reviews have been really positive on him, so I am not that concerned at this point. Frankly, the reports on Tolbert and how he's looked and how much work he's put in have me not really worrying about WR overall at all.

#5, yeah a concern. But it is what it is.

#7, yeah, this has the makings of a disaster if we find ourselves in a bunch of important, close games.

I have three concerns on offense:

1) McCarthy/Schottenheimer/OC - I have no idea what to expect. McCarthy has had some good seasons as a playcaller and then some not so good ones. I was ready to move on from Moore simply because I think we stagnated and just needed a new voice and it was easier to move on from an OC than a QB. But I would have preferred they bring in a legit outside OC. They did not.

2) Dak - I have no idea what to expect. Will we get the efficient one from some previous years or the one that just takes a lot of chances and turns the ball over (yeah, I get it Dak fans, some of his ints last year were the fault of the receivers)? I don't think Dak stinks but in a division with arguably the most talented team in the league in Philly, he needs to be great as the margin for error is going to be pretty thin and you just can't have Dak turning the ball over or making questionable decisions in important games.

3) OL - If Martin is not here to start the season and it lasts more than a few games (frankly, that Giants game becomes worrisome with their interior DL if Martin isn't there) it's not good. People think Steele and Biadasz are good but that are good, in part, because they have Martin between them. You remove Martin and suddenly your C and RT are bigger questions than people want to let on. If he's not there, the OL is a real problem. If Tyron goes down, as he typically does, and Martin isn't around, the OL goes from a real problem to a disaster.

I’m actually more optimistic than I’ve been in years, probably more than a decade.

  1. I will agree the O-line depth may be cause for concern, but the projected starters look strong. I don’t worry about the Zack Martin situation. He’s a true pro who will be ready when he arrives.
  2. If we’re worrying about RB depth, that means we’re good with our starter. That’s a good thing. And I still think they have Zeke on speed dial if the guys they have disappoint.
  3. By all accounts, Gallup is answering those questions. He was said to have had a ‘great practice’ on Saturday.
  4. Gallup gives them 3 starters. How many teams have more than that? And the reports for Turpin, Tolbert, Brooks, and Cropper have been very good. All trending up.
  5. Were you pleasantly surprised by Ferguson and Hendershot last year or disappointed?
  6. Put in place by a Super Bowl winning coach who will be calling the plays. This was McCarthy’s call and he’s not going to undermine himself. I think we’re going to see a less predictable offense with less curls and comebacks that were all too predictable in Moore’s offense.
  7. No argument there. A legitimate concern.
  8. Another legitimate concern. But he’s definitely got better options and supporting cast today than he did last year. And he has proven that he can be more successful when he does.
I think it’s all about perspective. As in life, if you choose to focus on the positive, you can. But if you want to focus on the negative, you can do that too.

But I think if you take inventory, the positive far outweighs the negative.
Good post Stash. Valid points. Guess I have been conditioned to anticipate the bottom falling out at some point.

As I reflect, my negativity is primarily coming from 4 things: Zack’s holdout and the FO response, Schoonmaker’s injury condition, the lack of anyone stepping up along the OL, and the inaction at K.

Those issues have two primary causes: either they are surprise problems we got blindsided with (Zack and Schoon), or they are connected to issues that are self inflicted by inactivity of the FO (OL depth, K)

I was feeling decent a few weeks ago, but the questions and issues have been mounting, hence my preparing to be disappointed once again lol

I said it after the draft...and still stand by it...this off season had been nothing short of a disaster.
The only thing this team did right was let go of Zeke and Anthony Brown....
Losing Kellen was a monstrous mistake...
Letting McGovern walk...mistake
Not drafting a RB earlier than the 6th round...mistake
Not finding a kicker.....mistake
Not moving on from Dak.....mistake
Thinking Tyron will make it through a season...mistake
Letting Schultz walk.....mistake
Thinking Gilmore and Cook was enough work in free agency...mistake
Sitting on this roster...no roster turnover...mistake

It's as if they think this team is complete...while the rest of the league continues to churn the bottom of their rosters...player acquisition is 24/7/365....this organization....has the least transactions of any franchise....which tells me....this team is lazy when it comes to scouting.....another mistake.

Say what you want....but Jerry's 0 for nothing without Jimmy....speaks volumes.
Jimmy would have cut Kellen his first camp as a player cause he was doodoo, and he never would have been the OC, ever. Ever. I'm so glad we might actually have a real fullback this year. Martin knows we are about to pound the rock like it's 1993, and he's trying to get a cash advance, Jerrah knows this.

1. VALID, but you can't address literally everything. And the Zack Martin drama is annoying, but at the end of the day should be resolved one way or another before the season starts.
2. Questionable, yes. But obviously the team feels good about Malik Davis/Rico Dowdle. We'll see how preseason goes but I feel better about Deuce/Luepke.
3. Don't really understand this one. Obviously it was an issue last year. This year he should be fully recovered (at least as much as he's gonna be).
4. Disagree. Gallup is healthy and we know what he's capable of. Jalen Tolbert was a 3rd round pick and should be more than serviceable WR4. Last year he was overwhelmed. This year I'd probably expect him to be a Cedrick Wilson type weapon. Also loving what Jalen Brooks brings to the table. Then with Turpin you have speed. This year's receiver core is way better than last year's heading into the season (CeeDee/Noah Brown).
5. Again, disagree. If we felt that way we probably would've brought in a veteran or tried harder to bring Schultz back. Jake/Peyton did nothing but make plays last year. I'd be completely content with those being the 1 & 2 TE's. And now you're adding a 2nd round pick who has size and athleticism.
6. Agreed, but we also had questions with Kellen Moore. Could this offense be worse? Absolutely. Look at the defense with Mike Nolan before Dan Quinn. But if that's the case you're basically guaranteed a new OC (and most likely head coach) the next year. So I wouldn't assume the worst.
7. There's always going to be questions at kicker. You could bring in a proven veteran who underwhelms (Greg Zuerlein, who missed twice as many XP's for us in one season as he ever has). But we're going with a guy who was the best kicker in his league the first two years of him ever playing the position. Transitioning from soccer to playing in the NFL I'm sure will give him some but he's proven that he can kick well. You're basically complaining that it's not a guy that you've ever heard of when the guy's we've all heard of never pan out as well as you want them to.
8. What is the question here? Dak had a down year so we got him better weapons and a new coaching staff. I don't think there's any question. Sometimes the QB plays well sometimes he struggles.

Given our long term struggles and disappointment, I can definitely see where you’re coming from. And I empathize with you.

But coming off of back to back 12 win seasons and having addressed three of their biggest weaknesses, I’m very optimistic about this season.

And I hope that some of the things that I listed can give you a bit of a different perspective.

Disagree with #3 and #4 but agree with all of the rest. Gallup a year removed from injury should be one of the top #3 WRs in the NFL.
