I hate the 3-4 defense

Cuz there are going to be some coaches who will not want to come here IF we insist on running a 3-4. Because Jerry said that one of the reasons he hired Wade is because he knew the 3-4.

And it surely limits the choices of coordinators.

But this was more a thread about being in hate with something and not particularly needing a valid reason for it. :D

Unmitigated hate once in a while is a good thing. :)

Yes, indeed. It is, in fact, the mortar that keeps me and you friends. ;)

:laugh2: .....awesome.

Put me in that bucket as well. Special NT here, LB there, the perfect personell package for this...........I call it the Goldilocks Defense. EVERYTHING has to be Juuuuust right.

:) I think I like that. Gives me yet another reason to hate the 3-4.

Every time I'm about ready to agree with you about the 3-4... I'll see Pittsburgh or New England play and realize how diverse a 3-4 can be and how effective it is.

I've seen Phillips' defenses that I've really liked. I don't know... I keep waiting for it to click.

One thing is: You need two very good OLB's to make a 3-4 go and we've only had 1 with Ellis opposite Ware. Spencer could make a night-and-day difference for us.

We will know soon enough if I'm right. I hope I am.

The thing is P-burgh has all 4 LB's who are athletic.

As the (now) old saying goes, "Don't hate the playa. Hate the game." In my opinion, the 3-4 scheme is alright. We may not have the prototypical players at every position, but we do have the exact coach to run it. Perhaps we may not be able to play this defense at Pittsburgh's level, but my question is why the heck can't it be played better right now? 4-3 or 3-4, it's still d-e-f-e-n-s-e. So, if it's not really the scheme, what are the true problems and how can we fix them before it's too late for this season?

Glad I could help...........hey wait. Aren't we supposed to be embracing this type of emotion? I think 'ol Hos need to come up w/ some guidelines here.

The best 3-4 ever run is the one run by Rex Ryan.

He runs a great set-up:

----------DT---NT---DE
------OLB--ILB---ILB--OLB

Opposed to us and many others who run:

---------DE---NT---DE
-----OLB--ILB---ILB--OLB

Yeah, Lamar Woodley and that jaw dropping 4.77 dazzled scouts. Clearly an athletic freak.

I can see why someone would hate the defense that has won 4 out of the last 7 Superbowls. Obviously it's a flawed scheme.

Well said.

I see P-burg play it and everyone is aggressive and flying around the field--

God-almighty, our guys look like it's illegal to touch anyone on the other team.

Which would..... magically get fixed if we played a 4-3?

The Ravens, and for that matter, the Patriots too, run a hybrid scheme where just about all the OLB's and D-Lineman are interchangeable. The Ravens in particular have run a lot of fire zones (LBs rushing and D-Lineman dropping into zone coverage)

I don't hate it , but it doesn't fit this team or it's personnel . I think this team could easily make the switch back to the 4-3 and only need to add a couple of parts during the draft/free-agency .

They would probably need another pass rush DE to spell Ware and Spencer . You could probably bring Ellis in with his hand on the ground occasionaly , but I'd hate to count on him . I think Bradie , Bobby , Kevin , and Zach would all perform better in a 4-3 , but you would probably need to bring in an additional OLB . That's pretty much it . D-line would be fine as well as the secondary .

Now you stay the 3-4 . You have to go get a NT , might need a DE to replace Canty or Spears depending , and a MLB who can actually get off blocks , maybe two . That's an awful lot to put into a defense that's already full of first day picks .

The biggest issue would be finding a coach who could run that 4-3 , and make the conversion . Still , the coaching candidates broaden when you go 4-3 , and names like Singletary , Harbaugh , Spagnuolo , and Ryan paired with Garrett begin to sound pretty good .

The 3-4 is a total failure in Dallas, has been since day 1.... PERIOD.

You're hired. Or do you just sing?

Haven't you heard? Magically tweaking an X or an O always fixes everything. That's why Phillips more attacking 3-4 was going to set the world on fire, because Parcells used an antiquated version of X's and O's that didn't free up players to rush the passer. Just don't tell Joey Porter.

I don't like the 3-4 either!!!

There ya go. That's what I'm lookin for.

None of this logical, well thought out, football talk...just a pure and simple, "I don't like the 3-4....and my reason is.....because"

:)
