I don't particularly like Mort, but I don't think of him as a liar...just unprofessional. Professional standards of journalism call for journalists to get at least 3 sources before they go ahead with a rumor. It's alright to report a rumor as long as you have 3 different credible sources and your make note that it's just a rumor. It's sort of the tradeoff for the public/reader not being able to force the journalist to reveal their sources.

Instead, everybody knows that Mort probably got one source spouting this off and ran with the entire story. Sadly, I know of reporters at papparazzi rags that always get three sources while dingbats like Mort feel they are above that.
