I think Tyron Smith, if healthy, will start

I think the only hesitation with that setup is you’re pulling a Byron Jones with Tyler Smith moving him back and forth between G and T. Might hurt his development.

(If Tyron gets hurt, I believe Smith will be moved to LT. )

Steele is set to be ready to go by camp. I know we are scarred from the Gallup thing but all the info out there points to him being full go for camp.

He’s already doing full OL kick slide drills and by watching him you wouldn’t even be able to tell he had an injury.

Again, I know Gallup is fresh in our minds, but there’s been zero indication that Steele and/or Pollard will miss any significant TC time.
Even if he is ready to participate at the begining of camp, will he be at 100% after being out and rehabbing for so long? Drills aren't the same as game situations and full contact.

But even on the optimistic side, even if Steele is 100%, why can't he be the swing tackle and still have Tyron start at RT? Tyron, even though not what he once was, is still the better player, and if he health doesn't hold up Steele will have had more time to strengthen and get game ready when needed.

Last update I heard, he was expected to be a full participant in July.

Yes but that does not feed into the Doom and Gloom scenarios, So popular on the Site
Even so, he could be the swing tackle and Tyron be the starting RT. Bottom line is that Tyron playing doesn't necessarily mean Tyler Smith moves to OG

Tyron is not a better RT than Steele at this point in time.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree on that. Tyron has had trouble staying healthy, but he has played well when he has been, including while Steele was out last year. I accept he isn't what he once was, but Tyron Smith losing a fraction of a step is still better than the majority of players.

In regard to the first part, if he’s participating (not rehab) in July then there’s no reason to believe he won’t be able to play in September. He would have to be in rehab for 60-70% of camp for that to be a concern.

Secondly, Steele could very well be the swing. But why make your starting OL weaker than it has to be? The key here is Waletzko who I soon believe will have many of our minds at ease. He looked really good in his few chances before injury and the team has said on multiple occasions they are extremely pleased with where he’s at.

With Waletzko as the swing, you can play your best 5 in Smith/Smith/Tyler B/Martin/Steele and slide Waletzko in when Tyron is inevitably injured.

Yeah, we will. Tyron had no confidence out there at RT and was just trying to survive. Take a look at the drop off in the running game with Smith at RT vs when Steele was there.

We have no choice because position wasn't addressed in draft. So put him in there and cross fingers he can last all year....which he hasn't in how many years.

LOL. He got hurt in a freak accident last season. It is football you know.

And it was about 2 weeks before the season started.
Love the guy but his freakishly big and his body just isn’t holding up to the demands of the NFL anymore. That being said I keep him and start him until he just can no longer go.

let's start a poll on how many games before he's hurt.

I'll start it off at 3, crap, it might happen in the preseason if they let him play. hum

People just need to stop with the "Tyron should be the swing tackle" argument. When healthy, Tyron will play. Why? Because he's still the best OT on the team. You don't sit your best player just because he MIGHT get hurt. If he's healthy, he's one of the top 2-3 OT's in the entire NFL. If he get's hurt, you deal with it.

His restructured contract is incentive based, where he gets docked pay if he does get hurt. But Tyron will start. He will either start at LT or RT. Tyler will start. He will either start at LT or LG. The undrafted Terence Steele will either start at RT, or be the swing tackle. There is NO SCENARIO at all where Tyron Smith is the swing tackle. Either he's healthy and starts, or he's hurt, and the younger guys play. If Tyron gets hurt, then the Cowboys have 4 players on the roster who can fill in at the swing tackle position - Waletzko, Ball, Edoga and Richards. All but Waletzko will get time at both Guard and Tackle during training camp.
”if healthy”.

then the musical chairs starts and the lack of continuity begins again.

What did he do in his playing time to prove to you he's anything but another player past him prime the Cowboys hung onto for too long?

Even if you think he can still play, you're just hoping he returns to form because you certainly don't have any evidence to back it up.

This is an incredibly optimistic view. A more realistic view would be to say when Tyron gets hurt we have no one on the roster who can fill in.

I feel certain it will be:
Tyler - TBD - Biadasz - Zach - Tyron

Left guard will be manned by Steele, Chuma, Asim, Bostic, or one of the holdovers from last season.
The only way Tyron goes back to LT and Tyler to guard is if no one can step up at LG and Steele is fully healthy for RT.

Tyron and Zach on the right side would be awesome….Tyron is definitely a better pass protector than Steele and looked great at RT in the playoffs. Steele is very good for an undrafted T, especially considering how far he came from his rookie disaster season, but his strength is run blocking, so if he’s healthy and can adapt at LG, that starting lineup would be the best OL we’ve run out there in years.
