I thought first offense (domestic violence) was 6 game suspension

I know there's already a Ray Rice thread, but I wanted to specifically pose this question. Now, I'm sick at what Ray did and I totally agree he should be banned indefinitely and blacklisted by teams. But . . . didn't they just create a new rule because of this incident saying a first offense for domestic violence is 6 games and second offense is a lifetime ban? So I don't understand how Ray is banned indefinitely. It just makes Goodell seems less decisive. First, Ray gets 2 games, then the new rules is proposed (6 for first, life for second), then the video is released and Ray is banned indefinitely. What are they trying to do here?

My theory is the league will claim he is suspended for lying about what happened that night.

Also, we don't know how long he will truly be suspended at this point. Indefinite could mean 2 games, 6 games, a whole season or longer.

i agree....if he got 2, and 6 games is the new rule, then he gets 2.

you cant be in double jeopardy and have your sentence changed on a whim.

Not arguing with you, but what could he have lied about? He admitted he hit her and the video showed that. Her role may have been exaggerated but he still admitted to striking her and the first video showed she was knocked out. I don't get the 2 separate penalties for the one offense. Greg Hardy and Ray McDonald both played this week and no one seemed to care.

I do think it comes down to the exaggeration of her role in this.

I wouldn't say no one seemed to care about Hardy or McDonald. This difference is the timing. The Rice incident occurred in February and over time it went through the legal process before the league laid down their suspension. I believe Hardy is still going through the legal process since his appeal in July. Obviously the McDonald case just happened and only getting started. These things do have to play out a bit before the league can pass down their judgment. Can't really compare these separate incidents at this time.

this is getting so messed up.

I'm not about to defend Ray Rice, but compared to someone like Brandon Marshall, he is Mother Teresa.

Yet Brandon served a grand total of a single game.

A question a child might ask but not a childish question.

Unfortunately, when you raise these questions, you get accused of defending a wife beater. All we really want is the process to be followed.

This is total double jeopardy. He was suspended, then a new policy brought in allegedly prospectively, then it was retroactively used on him and he was given a punishment more severe than the policy called for in the first place.

The problem is the league is so lenient. Our guy got 10 games and was responsible for a death. Ben Roethlisberger got four games for his activity with women. So they get used to working on a scale of light punishments. It finally backfired.

Rice's team versus Roethlisberger's team in prime time this week. Should be fun!

He's making the rules up as he goes along. Ray didn't get suspended for what he did. He got suspended because of the public outrage of the video.

This is it exactly. Goodell has no principle that guides him other than whatever way he thinks the public winds of opinion are blowing. It seems this is what guides some other wannabe dictators currently making decisions that affect us all. Absolute terrible way to lead, if thats what it can be called.

You can in the NFL with king roger calling the shots. The NFLPA should really step in, but De Smith isnt touching this one with the public outrage at the moment.

Ray Rice should sue the NFLPA for not representing him.

I am beginning to think that not only is public opinion being guarded against, but a lot of tax breaks that are in jeopardy if they lose the favor of congress. Special interest groups are looking for any opportunity to bring the NFL down.

The other thing is I am not sure they need the tax breaks. In fact, they don't.
