I trust our defense

All time great defenses can make you fail at everything, but good defenses will concede the short stuff and force you to be perfect 50 times to beat them. It's a good approach because almost no offense can actually do that.

And David Irving looked like some kind of football killbot out of nowhere late in that game too.

It was the backup Right Tackle... But.... The were double teaming Irving as well and it made no difference.

The problem with our defense, and defensive scheme, is that we will have issues when/if we meet very efficient offensive teams, who are more than willing and capable of dink and dunking the ball down the field on long drives.
Like, say, the Patriots, who are pretty much the greatest team ever at that style of offense.

The good aspects of such a D were highlighted last night...when our offense was on the field. Drive after drive, we marched right down the field 5 yards at a time, only to be struck down by a penalty or a drop or a Lucky Whitehead, and have to settle for a long FG attempt.

And the D still has not given up a 100 yard game to a runner yet.

Wow that's pretty crazy. We could realistically go the entire season without allowing a hundred yard rusher. That's got to be a club record.

And I think we've only allowed a singe hundred yard receiver (could be wrong though). I believe it was Brown and many of his yards came on the final play of the game where we were just trying to keep him out of the end zone.

Our defense has done a FANTASTIC job of containing opponents' biggest weapons, week in and week out.

marinelli is just a fantastic coordinator bottom line. You look at a team like the patriots and the 'names' on their roster don't really reflect what you'd expect their record to be. That's what's happening on our defense. That's what great coaching does.

The last two weeks we're getting pressure and turnovers, too. I have no idea how they're doing it, because it's with smoke and mirrors, but they're playing great.

If the offense could get out of its own way with the penalties, and the players coming back come back in form, we could be onto something here.

I didn't believe in it but I thought it would be better than 2014.

It's much better than 2014.

Also, I didn't expect to find gems like Brown, and Collins.

yes, i remember you posting some positive about it, more than i did. I knew Rod does better with less talent, but at this level. Props to the db coach as well, and all the defensive coaches , because they are all working with less.

That doesn't mean a lot, given all the teams who use multiple backs.

However, we are the only team in the NFL that hasn't given up 120 yards rushing in a game yet. The Giants have only done so once. The Saints and Panthers have given up 120 twice each (which I guess is because why bother when you can pass at will against them?).

I really liked the defense for three quarters last but not the third quarter. that quarter showed that our safety play if still a big problem. also carr scares me more then the rookie on the other side.

It's difficult to hold teams to just 6 points.

The one thing going for us is that our defense seems to get better in smaller spaces, which helps turn a lot of potential touchdowns into field goals.

Exactly. Our defense is predicated on the other team making a mistake. When you play elite QB's who can put the ball on a dime, it can be exposed.

It only takes regression in one playoff game to end this wonderful ride. Hopefully it won't happen. You're a more trusting person than I if you actually trust that it won't happen.

That's true of every team. The fact is the Cowboys defense has been pretty good, and exceeded most reasonable expectations.

Essentially, the defense is built to force the other team's offense to be as efficient as the Cowboys offense can be. Usually very hard for teams to do that.

Over the last month or so, the defense has actually been more consistent in their role/strategy than the offense. The offense looked good last night because it executed, but between penalties and executing on more than their share of percentage plays, it was a lot of risk.

Yeah, exceeding expectations, while wonderful, is kind of the problem. Expectations are what they are because most recognize that the D is talent-challenged. Who knows? Maybe they will continue to play above their level of talent. I just think it's difficult to trust.

But even if you're a great defense it can be exposed. That's just what great QB's do.

We just watched Rodgers punish Seattle a couple of weeks ago.

Big Ben ripped the Giants apart.

Having a great defense isn't the end all be all.

Broncos won't even make the playoffs this year.

You have to be balanced and hide your weakness because every team has a weakness. Dallas has hid their weakness all year.

I'm not saying they are the Denver Broncos but they keep getting better and better week after week.
We are tied for 4th in PPG allowed with 18.4.
And who are we tied with? The Denver Broncos.:)
