I understand no big FA's, but why no trades?

I understand our free agent philosophy of not spending big. But why not explore the trade market more aggressively. NE traded its 2nd rounder for DE Kony Ealy and CAR's 3rd rounder. That's 8 spots for a former second round DE who was a terror in the Super Bowl. I realize he's only averaged 5 sacks per year, but he is young, at a position of need, and has a cap hit of only $800K this year (free agent next year). Just wondering why we are not more creative on the trade front?

I think it's because he's more of SDE and the Cowboys have several guys who can play that role.

What they need is a WDE... A guy that uses speed instead of power.

In addition the situation with Moore (another SDE) was probably in the works.

The question I have is before finalizing that deal, why didn't Carolina call around to teams picking in front of NE and try and move up more than 8 spots? I think Dallas would have taken the deal and I by a bunch of other teams would have to. They could have got a better pick.

We don't do trades. We very, very rarely trade for players. Even if we did---we may very well be trading for a rental since he will command a large contract in the offseason we may not be willing to pay. New England is in the position to throw draft picks around to gear up for a super bowl since their window is closing...we are not.

Our window is wide open and I would suspect we may be a little more aggressive the next 2-3 seasons before Dak gets his huge deal. Our goal needs to be to make sure our core is locked up long term(only Martin is left) and continue to draft well. Unfortunately, we made a mistake restructuring Romo and now we have to pay for it.

I think other teams are afraid of getting taken to the cleaners by Trader Jerry.

Maybe Dallas would've or maybe they would have declined it. As I said in my previous post, I don't know if we are in the business of throwing around draft picks solely for a one year rental. Carolina got rid of him because they knew they weren't going to pay him...New England very well may not pay him either but they can afford to do that.

We've made these types of trades
But trading for a guy who you are renting for one year is not all that great a deal
Generally agree, but when you're in the super bowl hunt, it's a position of need, you have little cap room, and it only costs you 8 spots, it may be worth it.

There was no throwing away of a draft pick. Dallas would have just moved back 14-15 spots and got a player at a position of need. Then they have all year to,resign him if they want or get a comp pick if thy don't. I like the deal but I'd like it a lot better on draft day when I'm on the clock and can see who is still available.

I understand your point about trades, but Early was a bust for Carolina. Had the one great game in the SB, but was benched in 2016. NE uses rotation on the OL; perhaps being a part timer will help.

NE can afford to toss out a 2nd for potential. Dallas shouldn't.

Crawford is a dt more than de

This will be dlaws last year and he hasn't done anything.

Irving hasn't showed much

Moore is an unknown with no much promise.

:lmao:....No

Jerry is afraid he would get taken to the cleaners. @ least he learned a lesson in his Roy Williams debacle.

Other factors....Age. Laziness....Face it....the guy got his gold jacket and doesn't want to work anymore.

Real GMs grind. Find hidden value in deals. Jerry has never....and I mean never done that. And it shows. WE haven't won anything in 20+ years.

Irving can play SDE

T Crawford can play SDE

Lawrence can play SDE

Moore can play SDE

Ealy isn't any big improvement.

The trade game is the weakest aspect of the FO.

I'd like to see more done in this department, but to be honest I don't know how effective trades like those are.

But it seems like we see too many players walk for nothing.
