If Columbo is our starting RT who do you keep in reserve at tackle?

The safer route is not the marginal player that is Fabini.

HE GOT OUTPLAYED BY ALL THE OTHER TACKLES YESTERDAY.
I haven't broken down the tape so I can't really comment on this. I'll get back with you.

Once you do there really os no question.
It's going to have to be really lopsided to balance out the New Orleans game.

I don't imagine last year's "debacle at tackle" is too far from his memory. If he has the chance to keep a solid veteran backup I think he'll do it.

I don't imagine so either. Flo's injury arguably lost us the playoffs. I admit all last year I *****ed and moaned about the shortsightedness of not having a vet swing tackle around - perhaps the second most important player on the team to some's way of thinking. LJ Shelton, boo hoo!

It's common sense that not falling victim to the same malady would be a major MO for Bill this year. And everything you've written in this thread is sensible.

But the premise that keeping Fabini will come at the expense of Petitti is what I keep wanting to argue. I think Bill will try to find a way for it not to come down to such a clear cut either/or, even if he has to cut elsewhere..

Fabini, btw, immediately resolved much of my offseason angst when he was signed. He was drafted by Bill, as an RT, and moved to LT when Elliot retired. Jason never had the range or agility of a great LT..he doesn't 'excel in space', but he has wonderfully long arms, and has made it on technique and hard work.

JF was a very servicable LT in NY, never flashy, but he was totally competent and never a player fans, media, or coaches were constantly looking to 'upgrade' in the offseason. Yeah, speed rushers could turn him around on occasion, but he usually found a way to deal with them once he figured them out. Smart guy. He is a model for how Rob is going to have to make it in this league.

Overall, his pass protection was more solid than his run blocking, but he never had an immobile QB to protect either. Testaverde, even after his Achilles injury, still had that fluid pocket presence, and worked the pocket well. Pennington is a lot nimbler than some folks think. I do wonder tho, how Jason would fare with Drew, or more accurately, vice versa.

Anyway, he was a sound signing, especially in light of last year's travails.

He was let go by a new regime for cap reasons and because he had suffered the injury..plus the new Jets braintrust had their eye on a much 'eliter' talent to rebuild the line around...D'Brickashaw Ferguson...a freak of a behemoth who's been spyed 40 yards downfield making flying tackles in preseason games this summer. No shame on Jason for the Jets preferring that kid.

But I still don't see Fabini over Rob as a Tuna choice..I don't think it's a black/white issue one of them has to go.

But this thread has been entertaining.
