If Columbo is our starting RT who do you keep in reserve at tackle?

Young, raw OTs with potential are a dime a dozen, really. It all depends on what the scout sees.

So are old, beaten up and chewed out OT's.

Fabini would be signed in free agency without a doubt. There is simply no doubt that someone would sign him. He's a starting quality RT for Pete's sake. McQ however will likely make it to through waivers to the practice squad. People here are way overrating him based on a few comments by Parcells about his potential. He was very close to not getting drafted and he hasn't exactly lit it up in the games he's played. I can't see any team willing to sacrifice a spot on the 53 man roster for such an unknown.

That's an assumption I would not be 100% sure of.

:hammer:

if I'm a betting man, I would bet that Fabini would last longer on the open market than McQ, esp. if a team is stacked at OT, and doesn't need a viable starter, or help at OT, they could just stash him at the end of the bench, and we're out a potential starting LT

What ogt and others keep losing scope of is that this isn't just about "2006"-- it really isn't. Both Jerry and Bill have emphasized this repeatedly... but still some don't "get-it". If McQ and Petitti just flat out sucked worse than Fabini this preseason then I'd say Fabini would stay but the fact is that he hasn't performed better than either guy even though he has considerably more experience in the league. The bottom line is that he probably goes and the younger guys stay.

I agree, Fabini's performance hasn't been good enough to justify in BP's mind, cutting McQ, BIll covets draft picks, he's not going to waste one w/o even trying, unless that player just isn't going to work out, and from all indications, that doesn't seem to be the case for McQ, as BP has stated that he's coming along, in addition to his physical gifts

Not to mention that the younger guy is cheaper and has future time to develop his "potential". If Fabini isn't significantly better than a rookie, he should be cut. It is just stupid to keep an expensive veteran when you don't have to.

Another valid point.

What you guys aren't getting is that Fabini *IS NOT* a progress stopper. We can keep Fabini *AND KEEP* two young tackles. You guys want to go with 1 veteran and 3 young guys with potential. I'm just saying we should take the safer route if we want to win now. Besides, I'm not even saying we should get rid of McQ...just saying that we can put him on the practice squad.

Why do you hate young people so much? :D

why can't we just put Pettiti on the PS then?
There's less chance of him making it there because of his experience.

This sort of goes back to this past draft. As you well know I was a Manny Lawson guy. Why did I think Lawson over Carpenter? Because I thought Bill would go with potential over present ability. I got burned on that one. Bill said he really liked Lawson but he wanted someone to contribute immediately. I don't imagine last year's "debacle at tackle" is too far from his memory. If he has the chance to keep a solid veteran backup I think he'll do it.

The safer route is not the marginal player that is Fabini.

HE GOT OUTPLAYED BY ALL THE OTHER TACKLES YESTERDAY.
