Marion Barber is a viciously tough runner, and Chris Johnson clearly is the change of pace back that would complement him. McFadden is a better pure running back than Chris Johnson, however, with the 4.24 forty time, Chris does a presnap shift to slot reciever, and suddenly, opposing defenses have to contend with a deion sanders speed at WR. I'll admit, Chris Johnson does not have any blocking capability to speak of, but with his versatility, has a slight edge over McFadden.
Besides, he's not dropping to #22 anyway, who are we kidding? Chris Johnson is a bargain at #22.
So McF is a "better pure running back than Chris Johnson" but we should draft CJ if we have a chance at either of them? Rather than spending a 1st rd pick on a back up why not draft the best rb who can be the featured back? Just because we have MBIII why should we try to draft somebody who is inferior to him? We don't know how long we will have him. You don't ever draft a player just to back up a particular player when you are not certain that player will be with you for a long time. With everything being equal, you have to alway draft the better player who can make the greater contribution regardless of who the other player at that position is. Just mho.
