And if another rookie makes a splash, who is the odd man out?

Crayton?

Hurd?

If Stanback or Miles return kicks, Crayton's importance diminishes.

I think Crayton stays and Hurd hits the road if stanback and Miles stay on.

Yea I seriously don't see any situation less than both Stanbeck and Austin/Hurd playing like superstars where you will see Crayton gone this season.

IMO, we're going to keep as many as we can...TO and TG can't last forever.

If anyone is gone is Jamaica Rector...if he isnt already. I cant remember if we released him or if he's on PC.

Anyway next year I think we have TO, Glenn, Crayton, Hurd, Austin, Stanback. 6 WR's isnt uncommon.

Barring injury, I see Owens, Glenn, Crayton, Austin, Hurd AND Stanback making the team... yeah, I can definitely see the Boys keeping 6 WRs this year...

than you have to go short elsewhere...

so the next question is where do you think we will go short?

We can keep only 2 QBs, with Stanback the emergency third QB. And we can stash M. Moore, or whoever, on the PS.

We can either opt to keep 6 WRs or Wade Phillips/Jason Garrett gamble just like Sean Payton did last year.

When 7th rounder Colston was so so impressive in preseason, Payton traded one of their starting 2 WRs to Eagles for a 3rd rounder(?). No way we trade TO or Glenn, but could Crayton be vulnerable in the last year of his contract and we probably won't re-sign cause he'll want big bucks? He's a #3WR with great hands but lacks speed whose lost his job on ST to Austin & maybe even Stanbach. If Austin/Hurd & Stanbach/Crayton all look very impressive, we can showcase Crayton & find out if we can get a 3rd/4th rounder for him.

Don't get me wrong. I love Crayton's play but trading him this year allows us to get something of value for him rather then just lose him to free agency at end of season. Again this is only an option if Austin/Hurd in particular & even Stanbach to an extent are very impressive.

It wouldn't surprise me a bit.

Really haven't looked that far ahead yet, pal... you're right, carrying 6 WRs means you have to pare some other position... I'm wagering the Boys can find a position to short...

I don't wanna give you a stroke, but if I was a betting man, I'd bet the Boys go with two kickers this year, too... I don't think they'll trust Folk for regular field goal duties, so they'll keep the semi-reliable inside 40 Gramatica around... Nick will kick off, and anything outside of 45 or so...

Which means shorting another position...

We should have at least one extra position since Stanback can be the third qb.

gramatica isn't so great outside 45 anymore either.

Assume the Cowboys only keep 2 QBs on the roster (3rd QB on PS) like Parcells did last year so we'll only use 2 slots there.

We also don't know how many kickers we keep. Cowboys obviously very much hope Folk can beat out Gramatica. If not, they'll have to decide the value of keeping 3 kickers and coming up short somewhere else -- WR/OL/Defense.

I can see the coaches putting a preimium on OL players that can backup at G and tackles, heck wasnt one of the draftees even discussed as being able to tinker at all 3 OL positions.........

Could one see the Boys" grabbing a solid offer of say a 2nd round pik for Crayton as camp goes on...........wasnt their restric FA offer to Crayton in the 2nd round range?

If Battle can show, could he be the backup FB and 3rd rb?........

If this is the most current depth chart prior to the draft--

http://dallascowboys.com/team_depthChart.cfm

--then it's Austin, Crayton, Glenn, Hurd, Owens, Rector and Urban. Rabb and Jefferson signed on as free agents:

http://dallascowboys.com/news.cfm?id=4A2E770E-CD99-C8B1-CC3BD7556A821406

--and add Stanback to the mix.

Urban, Rabb and Jefferson are camp fodder.

Whether he's returning kicks or not, Austin is too good enough of a special teams player for the team to lose at this point.

Glenn and Owens are no-brainers.

Great hands out of the slot and versatility as a (possibly emergency backup) ST returner will keep Crayton as the third WR (for the moment).

That leaves Hurd, Rector and Stanback.

Hurd has been an undrafted free agent project (and receiver protege of Owens). I think that Rector has been activated for a few games, but other than that, he's been stuck in practice squad mode.

IF Stanback comes in, displays his outstanding pre-injury speed, good hands and return skills, I think that will be enough to unseat Hurd. In that scenario, I see Hurd getting cut, Rector staying on the PS and the WR set being: Glenn, Owens, Crayton, Stanback and Austin.

SHOULD Stanback struggle for any reason, I see Stanback being moved to the PS, Rector getting cut and the WR set being: Glenn, Owens, Crayton, Hurd and Austin.

I think Hurd is a much more polished reciever than Austin, but Hurd is a slow posession reciever. ( he can be our own dwayne Jarrett minus the 2nd round pick) If Ray Sherman (WR's coach who is awesome by the way) can teach Austin to become a real wideout, this guy could possibly (possibly, not probably) be like a Javon Walker, a super-strong Wideout with quickness.

I don't like speculating about UDFA's like this... One can get too excited, and it really ends up most of the time being much ado about nothing.

Since there's a possibility both Glenn(age and injuries) and TO(if he turns out to not be worth the trouble this year) could be gone next year I don't see Crayton being moved.
