If this is the most current depth chart prior to the draft--

--and add Stanback to the mix.

Urban, Rabb and Jefferson are camp fodder.

Whether he's returning kicks or not, Austin is too good enough of a special teams player for the team to lose at this point.

Glenn and Owens are no-brainers.

Great hands out of the slot and versatility as a (possibly emergency backup) ST returner will keep Crayton as the third WR (for the moment).

That leaves Hurd, Rector and Stanback.

Hurd has been an undrafted free agent project (and receiver protege of Owens). I think that Rector has been activated for a few games, but other than that, he's been stuck in practice squad mode.

IF Stanback comes in, displays his outstanding pre-injury speed, good hands and return skills, I think that will be enough to unseat Hurd. In that scenario, I see Hurd getting cut, Rector staying on the PS and the WR set being: Glenn, Owens, Crayton, Stanback and Austin.

SHOULD Stanback struggle for any reason, I see Stanback being moved to the PS, Rector getting cut and the WR set being: Glenn, Owens, Crayton, Hurd and Austin.

you are correct sir

I think we keep six WR's this year:
Owens- starter
Glenn- starter
Crayton- 3rd WR/ relief at both starter WR spots
Hurd- back up to TO
Miles- KR/ back up to Glenn
Stanback- PR/ all-purpose

And I see us going thin at QB, where only Romo and Johnson will make the roster, leaving Moore for the PS and Stranback the emergency guy.

And becuz i agree that we'll keep 2 kickers I can see us going then at DL- because I don't think we'll need as many backups, I'm pretty certain that we kept like 7 or 8 DL on the roster. I can see only Spears, Canty, Ferguson, Ratliff, Hatcher, and Bowen making the squad. With Ratliff and Bowen being able to back up every DL position.
We also could go thinner at CB, remember we kept both Reeves and Jones not only becuz of special teams, but also becuz they were back up safeties. With Hamlin and Watkins won't have to worry bout that.

I believe we will keep AT least six WRs with Owens and Glenn as starters and Crayton as the 3rd WR. Hurd, Austin, and Stanback as the backups.

The Boys believe they have found Colston in Hurd and Austin. Appartently they also think that Stanback has a chance to be something very special in Stanback in the Rice/Owens/Irvin mode.

Remember the Boys also signed Richardson to a three year contract just before the draft. And they think he could be in the breakout type season after what he did in Canada.

Seriously doubt that we see both Owens and Glenn back next year, in fact it will not surprise me to see both gone via release or trade. Owens might be the most likely candidate. Could we see them both back, sure although TO is due another $3 million bonus next year and Glenn's cap hit next year would be about $3 million if released or traded.

Much depends on what Crayton, Hurd, Austin, Stanback and Richardson show in training camp this year. And if you are thinking we could somehow slip one onto the practice squad, think again. Crayton, Hurd and Austin aren't eligible and to many teams were looking at Stanback and Richardson.

Could we trade one of the WRs, sure but probably not Owens or Glenn at least this season. Crayton might be the most likely but he is a possession type receiver, not a speed guy so most likely to a team like Tennessee who needs a vet to help out the QB, i.e. security blanket guy.

It will be a fun training camp.

Stanback is going to be the third string Quarterback most likely

When was the last time Stanback played WR?

Freshman year in college?

He's gotta show something at QB.

Sam Hurd was the only one to catch a pass in the regular season, and Both Hurd and Rector showed more in the preseason, so why is this so laughable?

It's impossible to know what's going to happen.

But a couple of points.

Austin is a better prospect than Hurd. He's bigger, faster, and stronger. And while Hurd was the only one to catch a pass, Austin was the only one to score a TD...and he also did a great job on KOs...regularly getting the ball past the 35. And keep in mind he had never returned kicks before.

And I wouldn't say that Austin didn't show much in the PS. Remember, it was Austin that BP and Co were trying to hide. But they were told that Austin would get snatched up if the tried to sneak him on the practice squad. Austin also caught a 50+ yard TD pass from Romo against the Saints in the PS.....So I wouldn't say he didn't show anything.

Now, I think Hurd is a decent find too. And while he seems more polished as a WR, I don't think his physical skill are anywhere near where Austin's are.

Austin has a much higher ceiling.

You know where carnival rides have those height requirements. We need one of those for this board, but with an IQ requirement. It doesn't have to be that high. Five would be fine, it would at least keep guys like him off the board.

Austin has the better physical skills, but you never know how that will pan out. At least he is known to be a hard worker, it gives him a good chance to do something with those skills.

But just don't short change Hurd, he does have a lot of talent in his own right. Average speed but he does have enough. He also had very good body control and could snatch the football high in the air. He reminds me a lot of Antonio Bryant physically, a little bit like Chad Johnson too.

Like I said...I have no idea how it will pan out. And I did say that Hurd was a bit of a find. He was better than I thought he would be.

But if it's close between Hurd and Austin, I think you have to go with the guy that has more potential.

Not only that, you have to go with the guy that can help your team. Austin provides a lot on returns....

I like both....but right now, if you put a gun to my head and told me to pick a guy to keep....it'd be Austin.

Barring injury, I see Owens, Glenn, Crayton, Austin, Hurd AND Stanback making the team... yeah, I can definitely see the Boys keeping 6 WRs this year...

Ideally, Stanback, Hurd and/or Austin would step up and we could trade Crayton before losing him in free agency next year. (And I do believe we'll lose him to an opportunity to at least contend for a No. 2 job.)

But it isn't likely that Stanback will be ready, and I'm not sure that either Hurd or Austin is capable of taking Crayton's job. It would be hard anyway to trade a contributing receiver when you are expecting to make a title run.

Well, I guess they could cut him, but it doesn't make a lot of sense sense he just resigned for about 1.3 million.

You got it. Those are the top WRs the Cowboys have now. Training camp should be really interesting at this position, though, with four of these guys trying to hold off the UFAs and newly-signed WRs this off-season and trying to prove to the coaches that they are each indispensable. The trouble is, this roster is stacked with players that you'd just love to keep on your team, so cutting down to the 53 is almost heart-breaking. There's no way to hide some of these guys on the eight-man practice squad (as we found out with Terrance Copper last season)...

My question is this: is Rector even eligible for the practice squad again? You're not eligible if you've been on it for two seasons, so doesn't that mean that his time is up? As good as he is, he is not going to crack this WR lineup the Cowboys have. And those draft experts said we needed a WR this year!

You really think he'll beat out Newman and Crayton for the PR job?

Come on.

Actually I don't think Newman or Crayton would be back there even if Stanback isn't back there. Newman's too valuable to be used as a PR, and Crayton has no explosiveness back there, he's just good at catching it.

So don't be surprised when one of these late round/UDFA players makes the team as PR/Backup whatever. I can think of 2 more right off the top of my head Courtney Brown (think that his name) CB from Cal-Poly and the RB from Hampton

I think he beats out Crayton and Newman only handles punts when teams are pinned deep.

Crayton is sure handed but hasn't shown anything in the PR game.

I agree.

Good enough to not cut but not good enough to become a featured receiver. With so many needing a chance, Crayton seems to have not shown enough.

to be fair, Austin, McQuistan and Hurd were the players Parcells was told would get snatched up if they were put on the waiver wire

but I agree that Austin's potential and production is greater than Hurd's, so if it came down to those 2, Hurd would get the axe

I think we keep 6 receivers: TO, Glenn, Crayton, Austin, Stanback, Hurd

Do you see us having six receivers activated for each game or seeing one or more being moved to the practice squad?
