It's going to be hard to buy what the league says because of how they handled the evidence in the SpyGate case. There has never been a sufficient reason for destroying the evidence and nobody that has ever dealt with similar situations like that stood up and said 'yes, based on my expertise the league should have destroyed the evidence.' Instead, everybody stated that the cheating done by the Patriots must have been very bad and likely greater than we imagined if the league were to immediately destroy the evidence.
I think the league got themselves in this pickle because now the Patriots have shown that the potential reward for cheating far outweighs the punishment for getting caught. Other teams that do not have a shred of integrity and unscrupulous have no reason to not try and cheat because winning a Super Bowl far outweighs losing a 1st round draft pick.
The league also didn't do itself any favors by giving such a severe suspension to the Saints for BountyGate despite a complete lack of evidence. So now their punishments for cheating are inconsistent and the amount of evidence they use to determine cheating is inconsistent.
Roger the Rube talks a good game about 'protecting the shield', but he has done nothing but make the integrity of the shield look like a laughingstock.
With that being said, even I would not take away the Super Bowl from the Patriots if I were commissioner.
My recommendation is to finally nip this cheating in the bud.
Belichick = suspension for 1 year, $5 million fine (goes to charity and Robert Kraft cannot renew his contract for 5-years. If Kraft attempts to pay off that fine in 5 years, he will be suspended from the league ala Steinbrenner from MLB in 1990)
Brady = 4 game suspension for 2015. Will be treated like a PED case
Patriots = Lose their first 3 picks of the 2015 NFL draft
Patriots = $10 million fine
I'm not even sure that this is enough because the rewards of winning a Super Bowl are still greater than these monetary fines, suspensions and draft picks. But, hopefully it would send a message that the league is not in the Patriots or any other team's back pocket. And if you cheat in the actual game, there is great punishment for doing so. It may not outweigh winning a Super Bowl, but if you cheat and don't win the Super Bowl, then you'll wish you never did.
