If they can keep only 1, who do you choose - Irving or DLaw?

Be nice to keep both, get rid of some of the big contracts at the skill positions on offense, but Dak and Zekes contracts will be coming up too.

Based on his reaction to the playoff loss last year, I think there's a chance this is Witten's last year anyway. Wouldn't be surprised to see us spend 1-3 round pick on a TE if the opportunity is there.

I like Swaim and Jarwin, and they haven't given up on Rico. I'd prefer to spend picks that high on the line and/or a linebacker.

Unless some team is desperate enough to offer sheet him and pay up in terms of cash and a draft pick.

He's going to get tendered a #1 and D-Law is going to get franchised. Because we have some cap room and not a heavy hit coming from the QB position both will get a decent deal.

I'd cut Dez after next season when the dead money drops to $4 million.
Dead money is not relevant unless the team is max out against the cap. The "dead money" hits the cap with or without the player on the roster. It's call unrealized prorated bonus money when the player is on the roster but it is the exact same money that is called dead money if the player is cut.

They save 12.5M by cutting Dez. It does not really matter that some of the savings are in 2018 and some are in 2019. If you win the Lottery, do you care if 8M is paid now and 4.5M is paid next year?

If the team was maxed out against the cap it would matter, but they have about 30M of space they could create if needed by restructuring other contracts. Back on 2011 they really were maxed out and that 30M number above was basically zero at one point that year.

I'd prefer it too, but we do love our shiny offensive toys.

I'm not opposed to selecting a TE high if they're worth it, but I agree that there are other places I'd rather spend the picks.

Love Zeke - I went to Ohio State - but I'm not big on extending running backs. Given his suspension, and that first round rookie contracts have a 5th year team option, I'm fine with going the full 5 years before looking at his situation.

Dak, on the other hand, will be up after 4 years and QBs don't grow on trees. He'll be a priority.

I pick Irving because he's more versatile. FIRE AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would take Law, but I agree. Cut Witten, cut Dez, cut Crawford, cut Williams, cut Heath, ect....ect.... Whatever you have to do to sign both.

The Cowboys would get a 1st round pick. Teams rarely offer huge contracts AND give up a 1st round picks. They could get a true free agent for just the huge contract without giving up the pick. If it's not a huge contract then the Cowboys would just match it.

I agree. More than likely it would never happen. However, say Irving ends up with 10+ sacks, and is only 25 when the 2018 season rolls around. Might be lucrative for some desperate team that needs to improve their passrush, who has a 20+ something draft pick. Especially when the Cowboys will be dealing with Lawrence, I wonder if a team could do a poison deal, something where they pay Irving a silly first year amount.

They outlawed poision pill type contracts.

Which would you choose if you were the GM of another team:

Sheldon Richardson
5 year, 60M contract

David Irving
5 year, 60M contract
Send 1st round pick to the Cowboys

Ah, forgot about that.

David Irving. As he has been trending up the past few years.

Sheldon hasn't come close to his 14/15 numbers and IIRC is a headcase. 23 games has has 1.5 sacks.

I do see the point about the first round pick, as they are worth a lot.

This team normally spends most of it's FA money on players that are already on the team as opposed to binging in High Priced FAs from other teams.
Right and with these two one will get tagged and the other tendered. The real key to keeping both is getting Martin signed.

I wouldn't give Irving big money until he was out of the drug program or at least write his contract to get out of it if he fails again
Both need clauses in their contracts. Actually I would put them in every contract that the upfront money comes back if you get yourself suspended
