If we draft a QB in 25 or 26, here are the odds they will be a success

It also needs to be pointed out that those QB's in the top parts of the draft are often times going to the worst conditions. Can anyone tell me that Caleb Williams in Chicago will be the same career as Caleb Williams in Philly or Washington or Detroit? Picking a QB in the first round isn't the reason they fail, too many times teams take the QB and refuse to put what he needs around him. If Brady was picked by Cleveland instead of the Pats, I guarantee we wouldn't be talking about Tom Brady the GOAT.
This is very true. Consider that as good as Peyton was with the Colts he only won 1 SB with them despite carrying the team to the playoffs for more than a decade. That's because once he got to the playoffs, his team couldn't get past the better overall teams like the Patriots, Ravens, and Steelers - all three of which had superior defenses. Had Peyton been on the Patriots and Brady on the Colts, it's likely that Manning would be regarded as the GOAT.

With that in mind, how much of what works in Dallas is Dak doing the heavy lifting? Maybe what appears as a good situation is less so when Dak is removed
I'd say almost nothing he is doing is so special that it can't be replaced. How? Because he goes out, and the team did not miss a beat with Cooper Rush under center. Even the one game they lost to Philly in that run was one that no honest person would claim that Dak would have won that. The Cowboys as they are currently constructed can get Dak's level of play without breaking the bank and winning regular season games. If anything the year he broke his ankle was more of a year where Dak's availability was more valuable for the team because the offense and defense weren't where it needed to be.

As long as dak is here, jerry wont draft a QB in round 1, much less the top 10.
The one time he had a shot to do that in 2016, they had spot 4 and picked a RB lol.
You cant trust the "experts" who rate the draft picks ,or the fact the guy had good college career.

Trey lance is a good example of a guy who should not have been a round 1 pick, but he was picked very high in Rd 1.
Later they realize oops we didnt look close enough at this guy, and so they had to unload him.
Very wisely they called jerry, and caught him alone lol . Now dallas has him.

Most qb's go to teams with bad plan, coaches, OC, and they dont design a offense for him , they try to force him
into a offense they think is good.

Most QB's are just bus drivers of varying quality, and it is up to the coaches to utilize them in the best way possible,
and that rarely happens.

About dallas trying to draft a good one, if you dont swing your not going to hit anything. You have to take chances.
also get good at evaluating college prospects.
so instead of Zeke we end up with Paxton Lynch instead as Goff and Wentz went one and two.

I could be wrong DE, but this appears to be a list of the first QBs taken in each draft, not every first round QB pick. There are a few years where no QB was taken in round one.
Nope, you are 100% correct. I did not catch that earlier when I posted. I have re-posted a correct list in post #44.

46 percent, so almost a 50-50 chance of success.
I'll take those odds.

Too bad Jerry won't.
There is a HUGE number of Zoners who fall under the risk averse to QB change category here.

And the infamous "gotta have a guaranteed improvement plan" or I'd rather stick with one and done mediocrity.
They're my favorite.
Theyre like little Jerry voices and don't even realize it or just can't comprehend change is good.
As mentioned before this article defines success as getting a second contract...It has nothing to do with how they play or winning percentage or any other real measure of success. Here is another stat for you...75 QBs drafted in rd 1 since 2000...9 (12%) have have played in the SB...64 (88%) have not. Anaverage of 3 QBs drafted in the first round every year and only 1 od those QB's every 3 years makes it to the SB. The numbers continue to decline when you add 2-7 rounds in that time frame. Either way it's a crap shoot.

Great work.
Interesting…right now the 2020 first round QB draft looks really strong. Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert, and Jordan Love have all led their respective teams to the playoffs. Burrow already has an AFC championship under his belt and Jordan Love has a road playoff win.

It's human nature, my degree at UT was in Psychology and it is a well-studied phenomenon that people, in general, will always avoid change whenever possible.

Change brings uncertainty and uncertainty brings "what if" thinking.

"What if the change makes things worse?"............this constant worrying can increase stress levels which in turn can increase cortisol levels in the bloodstream which can cause even more stress and worrying........This can be avoided by avoiding change, hence why most people, if given the choice, will be risk-averse in their decision making.

I’m not sure the odds are even 46% that a QB drafted 25 or 26th in the first round will be a success. It’s pretty close to 50% that a top 10 QB will be a success. When I’m talking success, I’m talking about a QB you feel real good about for at least the next several years that can lead you to the playoffs consistently. When we’re talking franchise QB that are championship caliber, the odds become even slimmer.

In the last several years, Lamar Jackson is the only QB that was drafted after number 24 in the first round that’s become a franchise QB. Jordan Love has a chance, but the jury is still out. The odds are extremely slim coming up with a real good QB after the top 10. Once you get into the 20s, good luck! This is why I don’t like taking the chance unless you’re in dire need of a QB.

46% is a pretty good bet. We already know that drafting a QB in the first round is Team Building For Dummies. However, our front office does not know it even after nearly 30 years of failure doing it a different way.

Will the JonesBoys learn from this?

No.

The most important position on an NFL football field is obviously QB. The reason those guys get paid so much money is really very simple economics - supply and demand. The demand for good QBs is extremely high, but the supply for great ones is low. That explains why most NFL teams use premium first round draft capital to try and acquire a QB that can take them to the playoffs and win.

According to a recent article by USA Today that looks at first round positional players the last 20 years, the odds of drafting a QB that becomes a success in round one is about 46%. That’s actually higher than I expected. (Here’s a link to the article: https://draftwire.usatoday.com/2024...rates-from-the-best-centers-to-the-worst-wrs/) Obviously you can’t hit on a top NFL QB if you never try.

It’s common knowledge that the Dallas Cowboys have not drafted a QB in round one in 35 years. The last time was 1989, when Troy Aikman was drafted with the first draft pick of the Jerry era. The team hasn’t drafted a QB in round one since. Will we see a first round QB in Big D in the next two years?

Here are the odds of first round position players drafted in the first round having success:
  • Center……..92%
  • OT………..59%
  • Guard…….50%
  • LB…………48%
  • QB……….46%
  • Edge R…..44%
  • DT………..40%
I‘m not going to list all positions. Tap the link to the article to see every position and their likelihood of success as a first round pick. It is interesting that drafting an OL in round one is something the Cowboys have done well.

If Dak gets a new deal in the next 3-12 months, I expect it to be for a shorter duration. If it is, it would certainly open the door for the Cowboys to draft a QB in round one and bring him along similar to how the chiefs developed Mahomes under Alex Smith, Rodgers under Favre, etc.

Not saying I think that will happen because I don‘t think our front office likes taking risks anymore.
Nice post. Thanks for that.

The draft is a game of probabilities. The first three rounds have the highest chance to make successfull picks. Thats why those rounds are the ones with the most value and you want to maximize your picks in those rounds. Trading away those picks is not the way to a good draft. I didnt figure this out: There was a very good scientific paper about that a few years ago.

Thats why you draft the most important position every year with a high (1-3 round) pick. I already explained my opinion and approach about that a few times here.

We (the cowboys) dont value the QB position at all. Of course we spend way too high contracts on players but we dont spent any kind of resources to find a good QB. As your post shows the narrative that a QB is hard to find is not true. Its just a myth that is used by e.g. Dak lovers to keep their QB.

The only "problem" i have with those numbers of your post is: how did they define "successful". I cant find that in their article. Without that the article/the numbers is/are essentially worthless.

The imponderable is the roster into which these QB's get drafted into. For instance what would of happened had Mahomes been drafted by the Bears, or the Browns had taken Barkley with 1/1 and taken Lamar at 2/1 (only one draft spot lower than where he eventually went), or if the Jets had signed a hybrid of Mannng/Brady/Mahomes instead of Wilson and Darnold.

This effect can be noted in QB's that turned around 'their' performance after being traded (eg Stafford and Goff) .

How many of these QB's 'failed' when playing for a good team? It's strange that we're peddling this 'fear', when for the past 18 years we've predominantly played with a 4thRd pick and an UDFA .

There's the alternative thinking that we build both lines and fit in a 'lesser' QB. We laud our ability to draft so find someone that may need armchairing (a bit like Dak ala 2016). Or a QB that you can overcome their weakness (eg Goff, with the reduced pressure due to the top Lions O-Lions).

Precisely..and VERY important comment!

Dak did well as a surprise starter in 2016....but it was not a bottom feeder team with a very high draft pick like most rookie QB's get.

Offensive line is safest 1st round position to draft, eh? No wonder the team does it so often.
