If we knew we'd sign Collins, who would we have drafted instead of Chaz Green?

I don't have a link but I remember reading it in a couple of articles just after the draft and can verify this is true. Norm or Broaddus may have mentioned it on their radio coverage of the draft also.

Gil Brandt on NFL Radio. He hosts a program in the evenings.

Thanks. No link needed because I had no doubt Theo heard it. I don't recall hearing or reading anything derogatory about Petty and that surprised the heck out of me. I thought he'd look great in a Cowboys uniform backing up Romo but we had needs elsewhere. But the 4th round was ideal to make a move for Petty.

Green will replace Free and Collins will replace Leary in 2016.

I think getting Green was a good move he is a young man who can bring depth early on and become a starter in the future. I have seen what this team looks like with a depleted OL and in my view getting Green only helps to prevent such depletion.

Me either. It was surprising when I heard what Gil said, but I guess the team isn't going to come out and say pre-draft that they looked at a player and didn't like him. I liked Petty's quick release, height and arm strength -- and he just looks the part. But he was a more than a bit erratic on medium to long throws, and it's entirely possible the Cowboys didn't feel he could pick up a pro style offense.

...instead of Chaz Green in the 3rd? I'll say Bryce Petty.

If Collins is really going to play OG as many proclaim, then they would still pick Green.

It would have to be a player picked between Green and the Cowboys 4th round pick. I like RB Mike Davis, but he was almost there for their 4th round pick and Garrett told their 4th round pick that they were "waiting" to get him for the past 10 or more picks which indicates there were not going to pick any of the players within 10 picks of their 4th rounder.
3 92 TE Jeff Heuerman
3 93 DE Henry Anderson
3 94 WR Ty Montgomery
3 95 RB Matt Jones
3 96 DT Xavier Cooper
3* 97 DE Geneo Grissom
3* 98 CB Steven Nelson
3* 99 LB Paul Dawson
4 100 DT Angelo Blackson
4 101 DE Trey Flowers
4 102 OT Daryl Williams
4 103 QB Bryce Petty
4 104 S James Sample
4 105 WR Jamison Crowder
4 106 RB Jeremy Langford
4 107 WR Justin Hardy
4 108 FB Jalston Fowler
4 109 S Clayton Geathers
4 110 OT T. J. Clemmings
4 111 G Tre' Jackson
4 112 G Arie Kouandjio
4 113 DT Gabe Wright
4 114 G Jamil Douglas
4 115 S Ibraheim Campbell
4 116 DT Rodney Gunter
4 117 TE Blake Bell
4 118 LB Ramik Wilson
4 119 OT Andrew Donnal
4 120 CB Josh Shaw
4 121 CB Doran Grant
4 122 DE Za'Darius Smith
4 123 WR Vince Mayle
4 124 LB Kwon Alexander
4 125 RB Javorius Allen
4 126 RB Mike Davis

You are the only team in the league that pegged those guys as first round talents

I think he is referring to Jones, Gregory and Collins as the 1st round talents and adding Coleman as the "Work Horse RB" and Bennett as the future starter.

Based the fact the fact they were repeatedly passed over in later rounds, yes
You are the only team in the league that pegged those guys as first round talents

Your talking about off the field issues that other teams wanted no hand in
Cowboys took the risk they could make these various issues non issues
Gregory, Jones and Collins 1st rd.talent were not denied by anyone.

Jones is a boy scout, Gregory is a pot head that is legal in a few states
We may have the support system he needs or not dont know.
Collin has now cleared name.Top tier talent

Thought you were calling Bennett and the RB 1st round talent

Very good post! Hindsight is 20/20, I like all the selections added with the collins signing. You possibly have 3 guys with unanimous 1st round grades, with a 1st, 2nd, and fa signing. Mind boggling. Thus team has added major talent for added while now, starting with the Tyron Smith draft.

The best RB available.

Actually I would've done this... give up our 3rd and 4th (and future 6th or 7th round picks if necessary) to trade up in the 3rd to get Tevin Coleman. Then I take Michael Bennett (or Damien Wilson if he was available) in the 5th round. Then we walk away with 3 first round talents, our workhorse RB for the future, and a potential future starter on defense.

Tevin Coleman, Duke Johnson, Jay Ajayi, David Johnson........

You know who those guys are? They're Ryan Williams and Joseph Randle. Already had them here.

When Gurley went off the board, I wasn't thrilled about any of the rest versus what is already here.

As we find out none of the star players can perform to the highest levels if you don't have the big boys up front. Often these guys do not get the lime light but they are what makes it all work

I agree and it does not matter what era you are playing in, if you can dominate at the line of scrimmage you allow the skill position players the ability to do their jobs

We'll likely never know so it is a rather fruitless discussion unless we get a leaked draft board or Jerry comment.

It appears LB, OL, DE were on our radar considering what all we actually drafted.

We took Gibson after Green so perhaps we simply stick to Green and then go a different way in round 6.
Likely so... just take Swaim instead of Gibson and not trade up up.

QB and RB were probably not on the radar. We looked at them and didn't really target any and haven't heard any were on the short list.

Weren't we reportedly interested in WR in the 4th just before we went with Wilson? A WR with some return ability might have been on the list at about that area if we weren't looking at swing OT.

I think Dallas sees Collins as a LG in the short term and like Martin, would like to leave him there if he excels, so they likely would have still seen a swing tackle as a need. If Dallas really liked Green as much as they said they did, then they very well could have taken him in the 3rd even with Collins.

I could see Dallas wanting their OL in 2016 to be Smith-Collins-Frederick-Martin-Green. Green is a little more nimble than Collins and Dallas probably feels they can make a good RT out of Green and a great LG out of Collins.

The pick that I think it would have changed would probably have been Gipson in the 7th. They could have taken Swaim there instead of Gipson and not had to trade next year's 6th rounder for him.
