Let me start by saying that I am a respectful poster and didn't come here to talk trash. I grew up in Arlington and went to my share of Cowboys games back during the Danny White, Drew Pearson, Tony Dorsett years and really liked the team then.
Anyway, I am coming to the game (with the family) this weekend and would like to hear the scoop on Cowboys "players to watch." I would also be happy to answer questions about the Broncos if you have questions. I am a pretty knowledgeable fan and have a good understanding of the team and players.
To start, much of the practice info I have seen has been with a makeshift offensive line. Our line is a little dinged up and I expect they are resting several of our starters for the game (while trying out some young talent). I have seen reports about Meadows vs. Ware and I will honestly say I don't know if Meadows will be on our final roster.
Our starting O-line (from left to right) will be Lepsis (groin), Hamilton (concussion), Nalen, Kuper, and Pears. So, if you see those guys getting beat, you are indeed beating our starters.
Our D-line has been totally retooled and we really don't know what to expect. I suspect it will take us 4-6 regular season games to really gel. For a pass rush, look for rookie Jarvis Moss (knee sprain) and second year player Elvis Dumervil. If you keep these guys out of the backfield, they are our "speed rushers." First and second down will be Ekuban (you know him), Engleberger (not flashy, but decent), and from UT rookie Tim Crowder.
Our biggest question on defense is not really the performance of Champ and Dre, it is our traditionally strong linebacking corps. Our MLB DJ Williams is a tremendous athelete, but has been having a difficult time picking up the new scheme. If this continues, look for Dallas to have a strong running game up the middle this weekend by either Jones or Barber. It may take DJ a year to totally adapt, we'll see. Our competition for SAM is still open, we expect Nate Webster to start there this weekend. He is known for big, helmet popping hits.
Our offense is starting to look potent now that guys are getting healthy. Javon Walker is always big, look for him to make a couple big plays. Second year receiver Brandon Marshall is a guy with a huge future if he stays healthy. He is big, fast, and runs great routes. He could be the guy the Cowboys overlook. The final position I will bring up is our tight ends Graham and Scheffler. You guys are probably familiar with Daniel Graham, but we are looking at him as a receiver also - will he get separation and make catches? Second year TE Tony Scheffler has some wheels and will remind you of Witten. With Cutler's arm, they can be a dangerous tandem in the 15-30 yard range.
Those are the basics, what should I know about the 'Boys these days?

CaptainQuint;1592355 said:My next question(two part) is: are you worried and, if not, why not?
I saw Sam Monday Night in San Fran. Sam is gargantuan, and looked puffed, in at least two senses of that word.
The other concern I had was Cutler's brain, after his macho, non-sliding run down to the goal line, in a meaningless game.
San Diego's receivers must have improved, because they were bad. Floyd looks better. Rookie Naanee reminds me of Boldon already, and 1st round pick Buster Davis jumped so high for a ball, last week, that the coaches checked his footwear. Then SD has Jackson, whose feet too big.
I still think Chargers will win AFC West, and Oakland's defense will be better than Denver's.

cmhargrove;1591126 said:In all honesty, the defense carried the team for the first half of the 2006 season. Plummer lost his balls and was afraid "not to lose." We hired a "snake" and he wilted when we needed him most. I like Jake, he was the best bootleg passer in the biz, but his arm strength and decision making cost him his spot. Shanahan had been holding back on the playbook for about two years because Jake was limited by a small skillset. That's why Shanahan traded up for Cutler.
As far as the QB timing, it was the right thing to do. Our whole team withered at the end of last year, Cutler was a bright spot. If we kept Jake in for the playoffs, we would have gotten embarrased in the first round.
The experience of 5 games and huge pressure was great for Cutler, this year he understands what it is all about and is ready to go.
Changing QB's is never easy (I remember last year when Romo came in for Bledsoe and threw that pick). But, the pressure has definetely made Romo a better QB. Dallas will have to be ready with a hefty contract for Romo at the end of thhe season (I think he'll earn it).
ikiru;1592964 said:I can't see Oakland being better than...well anything (ok, so maybe this is the orange/blue in me speaking). I think that simply having Bailey and Bly makes Denver's defense pretty formidable...play man on man outside and put everyone else in the box. Just as long as we don't have to play TO 16 times a year (ok, I just threw that in for the Eldorado Sheep...mamma always told me to bring something nice when I go to other people's houses).
