I'm Calling It Early. Rico Gathers Can Be Kellen Winslow Sr. Good

Question is, is his blocking on par with Wittens this early in his career. Remember Witten came out as a receiving type TE not known for blocking.

We blocked and ran just fine even with Witten off the field a lot last season.

The blocking talk is overrated. This offensive line is so good that as long as he can put his hands on someone for a few seconds, Zeke or whoever can get loose in the secondary.

I hope Rico becomes an All-Pro. Actually, I just hope he becomes a good starting TE. Even if he does continue to learn and improve I wonder about his long term viability given his size. It's easy for a 22 year old (or whatever he is) to move well at his size and weight, but that will get tougher as he ages. Maybe he'll lose weight later in his career (again, I'm making the assumption he has a long term career) to compensate for a lost step or two. Maybe he's just such a physical freak that his size won't hinder him. These are all questions for far down the line, but it is a consideration.

I said it early on, before the first preseason game.

I think Rico will look like an All Star in these pre season games however when the regular season starts up I don't think we see him making as many plays or getting as much playing time.

We seen some pretty outstanding plays in preseason from M.Bennett when he was here as well but they did not trust him enough in the passing game. He did a heck of a job in the blocking area but they did not look his way as much in the passing game.

Now...Maybe they will let Rico play a little more in the passing game than Bennett...but until I see it...I am sticking with him looking like a star in preseason to only getting a few plays in the regular season.

Bennett caught 20 balls as a rookie. That number is a best case scenario for Rico in 2017. I think they'll spoon feed him favorable matchups in 2017. Next year, hopefully he's ready to emerge as a legitimate threat.

Between Dez, Williams, Butler, Beasley, Switzer and Witten, there isn't a lot of room left for Gathers. And that doesn't even take into account that the Cowboys are primarily a run oriented team.

There is only one football to go around.

He really is impressing me. I consider Kellen Winslow Sr. who is in the HOF the best TE I have ever seen. Gathers has that type of ability. Gathers can be great if used right
There are many of us that called it earlier than you. But it's nice to see the wagon growing. :flagwave:

The translation for "Calling it Early" is "Look at Me", especially when it's done as it's own thread.

Any type of guarantee on a message board is silly because there's no downside.

It's like when they allowed people to bet real money on the online poker sites. The method that people would play when it was free was completely different than when there was real money on it. When it was free, people would constantly go all-in. When you moved to the games that were for real money, that nonsense ceased.

I think Rico looks to have terrific upside, but creating a tread just to make some guarantee is just comical to me, especially when there is NO details in the thread about what he does well.

Even if he isn't it was great to see a TE catch a pass while running away from someone..... Most of the times its in front of defenders and a shorter gain if any at all.

Doesn't have to be. There's lots of specialist TE in the league.

Escobar was a TD machine when we used him in that role.

Good point. But Bennette didn't factor in much because of Witten and the coaches not finding ways to use Benette. However, the Cowboys front office knows that Witten won't be here forever. Who knows, this might be his last season. If thats the case who will be his replacement?

I think that weighs in a lot with the coaches and they will eventually want someone that can fill in for Witten's shoes when he's gone.

In his first two years Escobar had only 18 catches but 6 of them were TDs, only Fauria had a better ratio of touchdowns per catch. Escobar was very effective in that role, he just did literally nothing else.

If we're going to predict tight ends that Rico can compare to put me down for Tony Gonzalez.

The last argument I want to hear when it comes to Rico is his blocking. It will come with more playing time. You gave Escobar a bunch of snaps and he's a four year pro and still can't block.

To be honest....anyone could've caught those balls Esco did. His talent had nothing to do with it.

I don't agree... like Gathers he's also 6'6" and he's got good speed and we busted him several times right up the seam and he made good plays. He did benefit from some good throws but you have to pull them down.
Now LAST year against the Browns he might have caught the easiest TD pass in the history of the NFL.
