I'm missing something on Mario Williams

Ummm, except Garrett said it is a possibility.

And reports are that we basically already run a 4-3 since Ware comes on every play. Anybody who watches our D knows this is true.

Thanks for offering your unsupported opinion, though

Yes, we are a multiple look defense. But we are and will remain a base 3-4.

My unsupported opinion will be proven correct. Again.

Great. Then let's start where games are won and lost and we'll worry about stockpiling cornerbacks at a later date.

Sorry, using top resources on your 4th CB is one of the worst ideas I've ever read.

And who is saying use 'top resources' for the 4th CB? I'd sign a good CB then someone to push for 4th but I'd be judicious with that latter signing as far as money and length of contract goes. In fact I'd be sure I could cut him if someone else later in FA comes along or they get beat out by draftees. This team needs competition in lots of places.

Even if we stay 3-4, it doesn't prove your opinion. You said zero chance. Our head coach said there is a chance. You have already been proven wrong.

Carl Nicks >>>> Mario Williams (IMHO)

Carl Nicks >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Holland, Nagy, Dockery, Kowalski, and Arkin

CSS Sports reported that these 4 teams are going to go after Carl Nicks:

New Orleans
Dallas
San Diego
San Francisco

Also, they report that San Diego (pick 18) is showing significant interest in Cordy Glenn.

I look for the Cowboys to make an aggressive play for Nicks, especially with LaCanfora's report today. At least, I hope the Cowboys go for it and pull it off.

Nicks is the only big ticket free agent that I covet as a fan.

Nicks is the FA I most want or hope comes here. But I admit I want both OGs and Center upgraded above any and all positions on the Defense. Give Tony Romo an OL and I think we are serious contenders right now with this shoddy Defense as is.

I don't know. If we get Williams and Carr, I don't think this defense will remain shoddy. Without a shoddy defense, I think we are serious contenders considering what this offense did despite a poor line.

But I'm not opposed to the all-on-the-line approach. I just think the Williams/Carr combo gives us a second way to go about fielding a contender.

But I'm also going to hold out hope for Williams/Carr/Nicks and DeCastro or Glenn in the first round. Then I can pretty much live with whatever competition Dallas can get/afford for the other suspect spots (center and safety in particular).

Why the push, why the "at all costs" agenda?

Give me Wimbley over Williams.

The Mario Williams who has not had a double digit sack season since 2008.
The Mario Williams who has had 2 double digit sack seasons in 2 years.
The Mario Williams who has not played all 16 games in three years.
And he is still better than Anthony Spencer.

He may not be as good as Ware or Jared Allen, but he is still a good passrusher and an equally good run defender. Those sort of players are worth a lot of money. Whether you consider him an "elite" pass rusher or not.

Oh yes you can say this is the Mario Williams who has 53 sacks over the last 6 seasons. You can call him the anti Anthony Spencer. For most it seems they want to call him the answer to our defensive problems.

I want to call to attention the salary demands and the multi needs of this team that need addressed.

I want to call to attention a much smarter answer to those defensive problems and he goes by the name of Kamerion Wimbley.

No his 42.5 sacks over 6 years does not match up to the 53 sacks of Mario Williams by a whole season is most players careers, a total of 10.5 sacks and that will be the ammo for the deflectors but what I want to turn your attention to is the fact that 42.5 sacks over the last 6 years is 5th best in the NFL. Also the 281 tackles Wimbley has recorded to the 241 of Mario Williams. Also pay close attention to the 95 games played of Wimbley with only 1 start missed compared to the 82 games played (of which only 5 were accounted for last season and 18 over the last 2).

More then anything please notice the career 3-4 OLB in Wimbley to the conversion in Williams but even more then that and most importantly, the salary.

I'm not 100% against Mario Williams but with all the heat Jerry takes for jumping into things I do find it ironic that a majority of our fan base can be found guilty of the same thing when a pretty shiny object gets their attention.

What you are missing is Wimbley is not in Williams class. end of story

I agree with you, and you stated it well and to the point. Keeping Romo clean and healthy and opening up holes for Jones and Murray and giving Tyron Smith and the center a stabilizing force should be the primary play, imo. I should probably just shut up, because I can't control what happens. The arguments have been made. Nicks would give Dallas 2 blue-chip offensive linemen (Smith and Nicks), and I'd like to see 3. Just like the Jets... Nicks is about as safe of a big ticket item as you are going to get. Plus, he has a Super Bowl ring on his finger, and he is the best player at his position, right now.

Nicks to Dallas just makes too much sense, imo. Time will tell. That CSS reporter (Ryan Stewart) has a radio show in Atlanta, and he is a former NFL player. He said that he was "hearing" those four teams would be players for Nicks' services. He did say that he thought the Saints would "find a way to keep Nicks", but I'm not so sure about that. That goes against the national opinion, too. I don't know Stewart's sources, but that is what he said he was "hearing" in regards to Nicks. It gives me some hope, anyway.

The Saints are ready to crumble, imo. I think losing Meachem will really hurt them, because he has the ability to do more than the Saints have allowed him to do. There was a Boston Globe report where "some NFL scouts" thought Meachem could have a bigger impact outside of New Orleans, than Colston could. I think Meachem is going to bolt. I wish the Cowboys had him, and I still think they should have drafted him.

Warren Sapp stated that Dallas was about to get Nicks, but time will tell.

This offensive line doesn't give you DeCastro, but if Konz fell to you at 45, like in your mock, would you like this?

LT- Smith
LG- Nicks
OC- Konz
RG- Glenn
RT- Free

Not only do you get Carl Nicks, you get Glenn, and the center becomes a better player, too. That looks like an absolute young, dominant offensive line to me. Glenn gives you a powerful RG who has athleticism and size/length. Plus, he can kick to RT in a pinch. I think Konz becomes a better player playing between Nicks and Glenn, too. Glenn has the potential to be a dominant guard, and he would be a perfect complement to Nicks. Plus, Free isn't a power player at RT, and Glenn gives you some right side pop. All the sudden, who has the best guard tandem now? Plus, Smith and Nicks would give Dallas an absolute dominant, powerful left side.

It probably will not happen, but I can dream.

1. Tyron Smith

2.

3.

4.

If the Cowboys land Carl Nicks, it puts them one blue-chip offensive linemen away from the Jets model. Plus, they will have at least the opportunity to possibly complete my dream line in the draft.

This is correct. Why dont we quit worrying about spending money since it does not personally affect any one who posts here. Jerrys longest football virtue is his willingness to spend his own money to put a winner on the field.Even with this attitude it is not easy to always make the right decisions.Mario is a top 25 defensive player in the league.(maybe better) We can have him at no detriment to our football team. He just costs a little money. If he were in the draft with his present skills he would be a top 5 choice. Same can be said of Nicks.Maybe also a corner and center.Leave the money to Jerry and Steven. I believe their ability to sign free agents with various finanacial maneuvers is much greater than the average(Adam excluded)poster here realizes.Thank god Jerry does not have the attitude of some of the nay sayers who post here. We need to get some good football players on board and a productive free agency is our best opportunity. The draft is a crapshoot after the first 2 rounds. There are some fine proven NFL players out there in free agency with tread left on their tires and I for one hope Jerry will be very aggresive at landing as many as he can afford.

Charlie Casserly (NFL Network) stated today that he thought Tyron Smith (coming out of USC last year) was a better football player than Matt Kalil.

I'd use Tyron Smith as my number 1 recruiting tool to secure Nicks. Of course, I'd use the skill players on offense, especially the running backs and the QB. Of course, Nicks will see Ware. Of course, Bill Callahan would play a major role.

Also, I'd tell him.... Look, we know we are really hurting in the interior offensive line, and we will draft Cordy Glenn to play RG. We will do our best to draft Peter Konz at center (draft Blake at a minimum). I would let Nicks absolutely know that the organization is committed to having an absolute dominant offensive line, the very best in the NFL. Look, we have our 21 year old, blue-chip cornerstone (Tyron Smith), and we want you to be the first 6-5, 343 pound gold brick on that foundation.

Then, I'd show Nicks the "gold". lol :)

Not to sound like Spagnola, but if Wimbley's so good why do teams keep wanting to part with him? This will be the 2nd team in 3 years to move on from Wimbley. We can barely tear ourselves away from Spencer and he's half the pass rusher.

And never mind that one of those teams had Rob Ryan as DC.

Additionally, his 1st year cap figure would probably be within a $1.5m of the $9m the team is committing to Spencer as a franchisee.

Spencer's cap = 85% of Mario Williams' 1st year cap
Newman's cap = 70% of Brandon Carr's 1st year cap

If it means we're buying a Super Bowl...I can live with that.
The window's open now.

Well, it is because Oakland is in cap hell. They are way over the cap.

Mario Williams is a great player that teams gameplan around. Wembley is just another good player. Not really much of a comparison between the two.

Had we not franchised Spencer, I'd say give me Wimbley as well. However I'm not sure how realistic it is that we would even persue Wimbley. Atleast the reasoning behind Mario Williams is we'd have the greatest pass rushing duo ever, although I would personally spend those resources elsewhere. But at the end of the day I don't see us showing much intrest in Wimbley and Williams opting to sign else where.

FTR, give me Nicks and Carr and I'll be happy.

I know it's not the general consensus, but to me that's overkill. If we add Nicks in free agency, I'd be okay with David Arkin and Bill Nagy competing for a starting role at C or RG. I'd draft 1 interior linemen in the first few rounds, whether it was DeCastro/Glenn in round 1, Konz in round 2 or Phillip Blake in round 3 would depend on who is available at each pick.

I wanted Wimbley coming out of college....wanted him once his first team let him go (Cleveland?)...and we have known for some time Oakland was not going to keep him...so I wanted him over Spencer when I heard this.
