Interesting stuff on Bobby Carpenter

I'm always a bit weary of 'can't miss' guys coming out of the same position as other 'can't miss' guys (A.J. Hawk).

However Carp just got handed a poor set of cards as far as changing positions, and playing behind such a deep group of LBs. Looking at the 2006 draft, only guy in round 1 after Carp that is shaking up the world is Santonio Holmes. I'm not gonna call him a bust, more of a push, trading out of that pick was the best call for such a weak draft class. Hindsight is 20/20 though, so we're stuck with the porno-stache for a while.

I don't think Carp was ever consisidered a "can't miss" prospect. Everyone knew Hawk was the star of the two, but I agree, that was one situation where I wish we had traded down, but that whole draft was kind of sketchy.

We reached for Carp AT #18.

It is blowing up clearly but with Ellis/Spencer we are now and in future fine at OLB opposite Ware.

How can you say we are fuine with Spencer? Ive seen him show his quickness a time or two but as nonexistent as Carp has ben this year he made many more plays his rookie year over what Spencer has done in his.

I'd say that getting on the field trumps sitting on the bench, but that's just me...

And Carp got far less opportunities.

Carp wasn't fortunate enough to have one of the ILB's in front of him get injured.

He was unfortunate enough to have someone drafted to replace him, though.

Yes, but let him be. He's on a roll.

Again, Wade wanted more of a pass rusher at OLB. In BP's scheme, Carp would of remained at OLB. Wade drafted someone to better fit his scheme.

Carp, again, got moved around during training camp and was put behind two established starters from last year (although James was iffy, he has really turned it around this year).

So, again... again, it's not like Carp sucks. He's got good players in front of him. That's a good thing. Not a bad thing.

Better to have a first rounder not able to get on the field cuz the guys in front of him are good then to not be able to get on the field cuz he plain sucks.

I tried saying that a long time ago, and was chastized for saying that because everyone says 1st rounder should be starting!

I think what some are NOT realizing is that...the Cowboy have some serious depth. Carpenter may not be starting, but I have seen him in tons of special team plays...

Actually, reports were that he was working outside before the draft. Presumably, seeing that work and watching his '06 performance is what prompted Wade to draft another OLB.

Whatever man. Carp finished the year out well. Spencer got his job taken from him and wasnt doing anything.

Bottomline is as of right now, neither one is getting any real playing time.

When Carp is subbed in he plays ILB. I have yet to see him line up on the edge. And im not rehashing this old argument either.

I wouldn't say he finished the year out well. He had one good game and it happened to be the last game of the season. Reports of him "getting it" were vastly overrated.

Of course. Is this just a random observation you're offering?

So, I take it that you don't think that if an injury come about in the linebacker corp that Carpenter will not be able to fill in? Is that what you are saying?

No, I think he'd fill in just fine at ILB. Earlier in the thread I actually predicted he would take over for Ayodele next year.

Presumably only by your misguided little mind.

Err... How much would Wade have gotten to see Carp at all before the draft?

C'mon, Wade saw Carp step out of his car once or twice. How much more would he need to see him?

actually, after the draft Wade said that Carp would be working at both inside and outside LB

and as you've pointed out many times before, Wade scouted him as an ILB, I think his mind was pretty much made up that Carp wouldn't be a OLB in his scheme
