Irvin thinks Cowboys should sign Hardy to long term deal

he is going to be expensive- the one edge we have is that we were the ones that took a chance on him when pretty much everyone else ran for cover. And a lot of owners are scared to be seen as politically incorrect.

I'm not sure how many millions less Dallas may have secured themselves by taking a chance on him, but I doubt it will be all that much.

Dallas will have to offer every bit as much as his market value dictates and the only really question is whether or not someone else will be willing to go above and beyond market price.

Only way I sign him is if every cent of unaccounted guaranteed money is returned in the even that he has legal issues and becomes unavailable to play for the duration of the deal.

I think we should definitely sign him to a long term deal. He is a premier pass rusher. Something we desperately need.

Hardy has never been in trouble, gets accused by a gold digger, has all charges dropped and is now a pariah.

Yet Big Ben gets accused of rape twice, Mike Vick kills dogs for sport and dozens other actual wife beaters are still in the league.

I would sign him to a 30m guaranteed contract tomorrow and not look back.

The others were pariah's too. It's just that their indiscretions and crimes have been covered with time and a new leaf. The same will happen for Hardy if he doesn't get involved in anything else.

What I liked, was when a reporter after the game asked Hardy "how would grade your individual game?".

Hardy answered, "we lost, terrible!".

That's leadership and a serious team mentality.

I personally saw the interview prior to the game with Hardy saying he hopes to come out "guns blazing".

The way he said it sounded like any typical NFL player would have said and he said it quite humbly actually. Problem was he had a prior issue that referenced guns in a domestic dispute so the actual statement became extremely fragile.

I'm more than certain Hardy was not trying to be controversial whatsoever in that interview.

Even in the interview after the game a reporter asked Hardy about the couple of times he was staring Brady down as he would go to his huddle. Hardy answered, "I don't know what you're talking about, any other questions?"

Hardy clearly was staring Brady down and it isn't as uncommon as most think. The opposition is always watching to see physically or mentally how you're reacting to their play against you.

Hardy did the right thing of not talking about an in game skill, as well making sure he got out of the Hardy vs Brady situation he was in all week after bringing up Giselle. This is another way of a player getting to another's head through the media. This is not the first time the opposition has brought up Giselle purposely. Brady is aware of it also.

But because of Hardy's history and quite easily so, the media will continue to scrutinize some of these things. Especially under our limelight.

What I am seeing though, is that Hardy is taking to the PR work being asked of him after this week. They were probably expecting the scrutiny anyways and judging by his play he stepped right up to the plate and delivered.

I would have no problem signing him with a particular clause regarding trouble with the police and the NFL's conduct policy which is typical in contracts anyways.

^ This was a most excellent post. ^ :)

He is worth the risk, he has never been in trouble before Super Groupie

If he does get suspended for any reason the salary gets refunded and taken off the salary cap

Actually less risk than Dez or Lee with injuries

LOL @ super groupie.

I'm with you on re-signing Hardy too BTW. One thousand percent.

Yep.

Hardy is one of the NFL's rarest kinds of birds: a bonafied, elite edge rusher. Those are nearly as difficult to find as a franchise QB.

He is young and just entering his prime. He is elite at a position that team's have no problem spending big money on. He is one of the team's hardest workers and never takes a down off.

It is rare indeed to find an edge rusher that has great quickness, yet is larger than most NFL DE's.

Typically you'll see traits like big and strong together, but that guy usually lacks quickness and he takes downs off and doesn't play all out, all the time. Or you will see quickness and speed together, and that guy might always play hard all the time, but he is usually small for his position and can't play with power.

Hardy has it all. He is above average in size, speed, power, quickness, relentlessness, and football intelligence. He is an amazing player.

A guy with all of that going for him (including youth), almost never sees the light of day in free agency. It is only because of a crazy set of circumstances that he was even available to sign. It was pure luck.

Hardy absolutely needs to be re-signed as soon as the team feels comfortable that he isn't going to continue to get suspended (ie doesn't have a domestic violence problem). I fully expect his incident to be a one time occurrence and for the team to sign him long-term.

I think he's had something like 16 sacks over the last 16 games played. He's proven so this game he had is no fluke.

Dude's been out all last year and four games this year. He didn't fight his reduced suspension (maturity on his part), during the month he was gone he came in and played about 70% of the total defensive snaps (proves he's dependable to stay ready for his teammates), and he had a couple sacks in his Cowboys' debut. He will be even more lethal once he gets fully acclimated to Marinelli's defense and we can see him, Gregory, T Crawford, and Tank on the field at the same time rushing the passer.

He's only gonna get better and cost us more the longer we wait to sign him.

That is the exact way to lose him.

He played the "prove it" deal game this year. He won't have to do it again.

I mean he comes in after a full year off and sacks a QB who doesn't really get sacked and causes havoc. It may go a little un noticed because we lost 30-6 but if you have him on this defense and an offense that helps, dangerous combo.

you are clearly against it and are ignoring individual motivations and emotions. So let me clue you in

people do things for various reasons- you DO get that, right?

Someone that has been through the PR ringer and called all sorts of things by everyone and was thrown off his team yet still found not guilty by the legal system just MIGHT think that the ONE team that took a chance on him deserves some consideration.

And you DO know that some people are NOT DESPERATE TO GET EVERY SINGLE CENT.

I know you probably don't want to get this but then again who cares?

A FA tour means he has to explain himself, apologize and promise to be good over and over again at every stop. All the local media and politicians will get on their soap boxes and tell everyone what a mistake it is to pay an animal like Hardy 75m.

Maybe he takes 50-60m to stay in DAL and has to deal with only one day's worth of national news. DAL doesn't need to get a steal to keep him but a bargain would be nice.

No one knows at this point, so take a shot.

Then I guess he's lost. Guaranteed money with absolutely zero strings attached is wishful thinking on his part. Really not sure why he'd be opposed. Staying out of legal trouble isn't too hard so he shouldn't have any concern whatsoever so long as the paychecks are guaranteed.

Oh, I see. When it's beneficial for the Cowboys we pretend like players won't go to the highest bidder.

After the Seattle game of he has about 5 sacks I think we start to negotiate. Or I hope.

He played that game this year, he doesn't have to do it again to appease your worries.

Every player should be able to stay out of legal trouble, but that is not the industry standard for contracts.

I don't want us to resign him now. What I want is for him to have a great season, hit free agency next spring and make hypocrites of half the NFL's front offices who talked stuff and criticized the Cowboys for the signing.
