Is anyone else happy about our free agent losses?

It sucks to lose a guy like Leary but our OL situation is very unique and the loss doesn't hurt that bad. The other guys are all mediocre players who Jerry would have overpaid in years past. All the defensive players they will lose are guys who should be replaced with upgrades if you really want to build a strong defense. They may not be able to replace them all this offseason but the cap frees up in the coming years and there will be room to sign better players which we will all be happy about instead of watching these same guys getting shredded in the playoffs. They all need to go so that there is urgency to build a real defense that can make a few key stops and not give up 21 first quarter points in the playoffs.

Replace Twill with Brian Quick or Kendell Wright at a fraction of the cost

Replace Church/Wilcox with TJ McDonald at fraction of the cost

Retain Carr. Not sexy, but reliable inexpensive and a team player

Sign Ware, Peppers or Barwin to a 1 year deal

Get 4 mid round comps next year

I think a lot of you are overly optimistic and in for a rude surprise. Believe it or not the defense was a solid unit. Yes, our pass d wasn't good but against the run we were #1 and we were 14th overall. A lot of people get caught up thinking our defense was "that bad" because we didn't have any flashy, marquee names other than Lee but some of these players you guys are happy to see go (ie Church and McClain) were much better then you give them credit for IMO.

Don't get me wrong, we need edge rushers and a better secondary but even with a deep draft in both of those categories it doesn't necessarily mean an automatic upgrade. Plus we have more then a few spots to fill and it takes most players time to adjust to the NFL. We'll see who they replace these guys with but I'm not expecting any improvement in defense this year. IMOF, I think we'll be lucky to be as good as we were minus against the pass (it's pretty hard to rank any worse then 26th).

My thoughts exactly.

I think its good to see much of this defense gone. It was a must.

Did we lose any stars? No
Did losing so many contributors make it hard to get better? Yes
Our whole draft is going to have to be about replacing, not bettering
Dang, summed it perfectly. I wasted a full paragraph trying to say the same thing you typed while I was writing it, haha.

We need Brandon Williams to be our "snacks".

Sadly.. i read that the ravens are working diligently to resign him.

We seem to be drafting better nowadays, so there is a reasonable chance our comp picks will provide us with some cheap replacement players. Maybe not direct replacements, but whatever we need at the time we are on the clock for those picks, or maybe even BPA.

Free agency = over-paying. That's just how it works.

I generally agree with you, but do worry about replacing 3 or 4 of the key guys.
Leary hurts. The rest can go...plus some more.

I don't like the fact that our division is adding offensive talent to there team and our secondary is depleted. We should of grabbed a cb like Gilmore at least. All this we are broke or need to restructure every year to make a few dollars in cap. Every year we have a competitive team but skate by with sub par defense at best. I would of loved to add another #1 next to dez and a cb to help shut down these receivers. More then likely we will draft depth on the dline. Don't just get the scraps every year.

It will show exactly how good or lucky our personnel department is. We won't miss anyone lost if they do their jobs and get at least the same level of replacement. The only drawback to that is there is no room for error and the fact we have to improve at the same time.
