Is Avila a reach at 26?

Would drafting Avila at 26 be a reach?

He is. I thought he was last years "Most over critiqued prospect" winner. Ya he doesnt phenomenal burst, but he can get the QB from 3 different gaps on both sides of the line. Not very common. Should have gone top 20, even top 15
Yup.

Really, really hope we don’t pass on that kind of player again. This year I’ve got 6 1st round DEs and only 3 usually go in the 1st.

Ex - do not draft Avila over Murphy / McDonald / Van Ness etc.

McDonald is a guy I have been high on. Different player than Karlaftis, but he brings that same sense that you are going to be getting a very high caliber player that impacts ever down Karlaftis did

Probably my favorite realistic target if he makes it to us.

Dallas seems to do better than most with their first rounders, so if they draft Avila then I will give them the benefit of the doubt until we see him on the field.

According to the draft "experts" and pundits it will be a reach at 26.
But if he turns out to be the player most feel he will be, the answer is no, it's not a reach.
Some positions are obviously more coveted than others. But your team is only as strong as it's weakest link. Drafting a starting caliber NFL player is never a reach. Every position is that important.

I want you on record now. I feel like Steve Avila is as likely a pick at 26 as any other despite not really carrying that grade from the draft world.

I like the player. You probably like the player. That's not the point of this question. Close your eyes and imagine this....

With the 26th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys select, Steve Avila G TCU.

Did they reach?

Wait. Before you answer. His real name is actually Esteban. Esteban Avila. That's pretty damn sweet and should be noted before you vote.
I say yes, but most players at 26 will be if we only have 17-20 graded as 1st round talent. Most would say trade down, but you need someone willing to trade up for a player to make that happen.

Yes, I think people should pay more attention to Kancey.

Everyone says he's a situational pass rusher. But he has the speed, and size, to also play LB, IMO, or pretty much any position on the line.
Pass, the thing that will probably stop them from drafting Kancey is Quinn has traits he looks for in his guys - and DT's with shorter than 32 1/2-33" arms is usually NO BUENO!!!!! Gallimore is only here still because Quinn DIDN'T draft him and Jerry/Stephen's egos will keep forever to prove they know what they're doing.

I bet a gillion dollars there will be a player available at 26 that is graded as 20 slots higher than Avila.

20.

Out of Tyron, Tyler, Biadasz, Martin and Steele, which one does Avila replace as a starter? Is this just assuming a training camp injury for Tyron?
The short answer is none of them. They are going to draft a LG whether it's Avila or not. Why do I think so?
The long answer:

IMO this is the starting O-line that you think they will go with, Biadasz at C, Zack at RG, Tyron S at LT, Tyler S at LG and Steele at RT.
Am I right? I think so.
So now ask yourself this question, will any back up LG we currently have, be a better player than Steele at RT? IMO, unless they make changes from what they have now, ie. draft someone, the answer is a resounding no. So they will, regardless of who or when, draft a LG. The question is, will that player be a quality starter when needed? Keep in mind that we already know Steele is a quality RT.

Now lets say that Tyron Smith gets injured, as many believe will happen at some point in the season. If I'm right above, than I'm going to assume that your plan would be to move Tyler S to LT and bring in whomever is the new back up LG.
Right?
So you'd make 2 position changes to fix 1 position, one of which is a new player to the team who only got back up reps.

But, if you draft a starting caliber LG (like Avila or someone else) and you start Tyron S at RT, making Steele the back up/swing tackle, than that new player goes through training camp at LG and becomes acclimated to the team which builds continuity with the line.

Also remember that Steele is coming off a major injury of his own and may not be 100% ready for a full work load in TC. So if they are going to be easing him back in to things and do it as the back up RT to begin with, it will do 2 things.
1. He gets his work load slowly ramped up through out TC, instead of trying to be ready to be the starter asap.
2. He gets reps as the day 1 swing tackle. So if/when he's needed, he jumps in to his normal spot. The team is already used to him coming in with the starters at the position, which makes it less disruption to the continuity of the line. And remember, we already know he's a quality back up RT/swing tackle so they will trust that he can do it.

Of course it depends who falls. That being said. If no first round graded player is available at 26.

The grades on early second round players are all probably so close together that it wouldn’t be that much of a reach. Like on most draft boards the difference between the 26th ranked player and the 45th ranked player really isn’t that much to be honest.

Not at all. Picking at 26 you are going to be taking someone with a second round grade regardless. Avila would play more snaps in 2023 than any other single person in this draft.

If Gibbs, Mayer, and Flowers are still on the board and we pick a Guard I will snap.

They can trade back and get him. If they want him that is the best route to get him and an extra pick. I think that he goes between 26 and 48.
Agreed. No need to use 26 on him. Trade back to 32 with KC if anything. Reminds me of Frederick.

Avila is most definitely a reach at 26. He's a late 2nd - 3rd round grade.

I would rather the Cowboys take Atonio Mafi in the 5th round. Leave the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks for playmakers at RB and WR, plus add a DT or LB who can help our D.

Ex-DT converted to O-Guard who is a mauler in the run. Needs some refining with his pass blocking, but this guy has some mean and nastiness to him.
