Everyone was real high on him after the Tampa game but he didn't show up in the playoff game against Green Bay and that tempered some of the enthusiasm.

In his defense he had packers draped on him through out the game. Id like to think if holding a player by his neck was illegal he would have shown up.

As a young player, I don't see Irving taking the next big step until we put him in a position and leave him there. For any player, much less a young player to be playing at both DT spots and DE is a little crazy, I think.

I agree, we need to find a position and keep him there. I am shocked at some of the negativity in this thread considering how improved he was last season and how young he is. I don't think anyone will question his talent.

We need to add more talent to our DE position as a whole but that doesn't necessarily mean we need to pay 80 million dollars to a defensive end pushing 30. Irving had two dominant games last season---if he has 4 next season with more consistency across the board, he can easily have the impact of anybody on the market.

Someone posted one pic of him being grabbed around the neck and it turned into him being held the entire game. That's just searching for excuses, that certainly wasn't happening every play.

Lol, theres was more than one instance of him being held. Id have liked to have seen more from him but Im not going to bag on him too much because there were a few times the only thing keeping him from the qb was a blatent hold.

Exactly
Those other great players like reggie white never got held

When will you guys learn to check your bias at the door? Irving is above average with a consistency problem

I don't live in a world of excuses he was a no show in that game. He's had trouble with consistency which limited his opportunities during the season. He started coming on in the Tampa game but didn't show up in the playoffs. Every time we lose a playoff game many here make excuses about the officiating instead of coming to grips with the fact we didn't play well enough. infractions are missed on both sides, Mo got away with a flagrant hold on a 3rd down that many of us saw during the game chat. Had that been called it likely would have led to more points for the Packers.

Keep your shirt on buddy. Hes what 23 years old? Yes hes been inconsistent, but he has flashed real talent. He could darn well turn out to be a great player for us. I realize we needed more from him vs GB but I also realize he played better than the stats indicated.

I've said repeatedly on the board that he has potential and has shown flashes of talent. He was dominate in the final quarter against Tampa but for him to take it to another level he's going to have to show more consistency next season.

KJJ this sounds a little like a canned criticism. I watch the game and replayed with pause .The holds on Irving were at times full frontal. Thats not an excuse that was my eyes looking directly
at the hold. Now not to say he's not inconsistent but CWR was valid in his observation. I don't think he was claiming all game every play but there was plenty holding.

So his inconsistent play throughout the season had to do with him being held? Only on this board have you heard about him being held throughout the Packers game. Can you provide an article claiming that's the reason he didn't show up in the Packers game?

No mention in any of those links of Irving being held throughout the game. They're talking about the one play near the end of the game with the picture that's been posted. The argument that's being made by some on this board is he was held throughout the game. Nothing that's been reported supports that.

I miss football.

My wife is doing some documentation for her job and I am spending my Sunday night rewatching the Buccaneers game. I can't help but ask myself...how good can Irving be?

Would anyone here really be surprised if he puts it all together and takes a massive leap next season? After all, he is only about two weeks older than Dak Prescott and we all expect Dak to improve.

Is it possible Irving could more of an higher impact going into his 3rd season than any free agent pushing 30? I think so...

This isn't an argument for the team not doing anything in free agency this offseason to improve their pass rush. This is an argument that the team may not have to be as aggressive as some people think. If players like Maliek Collins and Irving make a leap next season, they could have a couple cornerstone pieces to build around.

I think he needs to take the next step of his career being consistent in his play. Great players bring it week in and week out.

You can count on him to contribute, but don't count on him being the savior of this DLine. I don't think we are in position to get a truly dominant DLinemen unless it is by luck in the draft or development. That being said, we need to diversify our portfolio as much as we can.

If we're going to improve the pass rush we need a couple of bookend rushers who can not only get to the QB but can open up opportunities for others to get to the QB. We also need to be able to push the pocket to generate up the middle pressure. Rodgers had a lot of problems with up the middle pressure by the Falcons. An edge rush will flush him out of the pocket but he still make plays.
