Is DeMarcus Lawrence done?

He will likely make the team since he is still on his rookie contract.

But if somebody starts a thread titled "Who will be a surprise training camp cut", I will seriously consider Demarcus Lawrence as my answer.

He really is not very good.

We've got great depth. Real solid depth, too. If we had that one guy teams had to scheme for, the trickle down would be noticeable. I think we're closer than some of the more vocal people around here. Especially since Taco should be an immediate upgrade. Insert Taco, exit Jack Crawford. That's a big jump in talent. If Collins and Irving can just give us the December 2016 version of themselves on a consistent basis, we could be pretty decent.

They've been clear for two years they want to build a deep rotation of solid players who can play multiple positions. That's pretty much what they've done. It's such a damn shame that Gregory didn't pan out, because he would transform the front.

As it is, we have to hope Smith can play and that they can do enough on the back end to justify bringing pressure more often when we have to. It didn't seem to work much of the year last year until, surprisingly, in that GB game in the playoffs.

It looks like we're going to add DBs with (my guess) two of the next four draft picks here. Let's hope they're the right ones. I want to like our personnel on defense a lot more than I do right now. As it is, pretty much everybody other than Sean Lee, Collins, Jones, and maybe Crawford I'm pretty 'meh' about. Jaylon Smith's another one who's got a shot to be better than 'meh.' I really wanted a playmaker to get to us yesterday. Not disappointed in who we took (though I preferred Watt to Taco), but I am disappointed with the way the board broke under us. It was looking pretty good there for a long while, too, which makes it harder.

I do think the team was prepared for exactly what happened, though. Marinelli, at least, seems pleased with the player. I'll sit tight and see what happens like I always do, but it was a little bit like getting tube socks for Christmas yesterday.

Feel free. Just spare the condescending talk for those who are comfortable talking about the facts of Lawrence's situation.

If you want to reserve judgment. Go do that. But spare us the never-ending cycle of grief to those that can deal with talking about the situation or do have an opinion ahead of your timeframe.

This place has a constant pattern. Any conjecture that might be negative is premature. Anything that might benefit the Cowboys? Let the good times roll! It's a clear double-standard.

People will lurk and take potshots at the position of others, while never actually having one of their own.

Yeah, the board didn't do us any favors. I wanted Takk over Taco because his tape shows a motor that won't quit. But I'm currently questioning Takk's mental stability.

I'll stop the never-ending cycle of grief if those folks stop the never-ending cycle of whining about the guy.

You guys and that picture... Geez Louise.

I'm willing to waiting until training camp before I make any prognosis about his weight... And then I'll wait several games into the season before I state my belief on his likelihood of getting another contract from the Cowboys.

I posted this in the last thread with the fat-pic, though unsurprisingly people return to the fat pic first, but here he was with his family on Easter recently:

(edit, linking to the page as that pic was enormous)

Not really fat at all.

Lawrence is a pretty good player who has a chronic back problem. I don't know why that's hard to understand. You can't give the guy an second contract unless he agrees to dramatically limit the club's risk, and you can't really count on him to deliver constantly next season, because of the position he plays and the nature of his injury. It sucks, because we need him. He might end up being a good contributor for us--he's still our most talented end, in my opinion. He might end up sitting 8-10 games. We don't know.

For the record, though, Michael, there's absolutely nothing logically wrong with your position that it's too soon to say whether we give him another deal or not. I happen to think we can't, because I personally won't extend a guy at his position with back issues, but you're right that it's possible the team will do it, even if it is unlikely.

Hey if he misses 8 games because of his health and gets 2 sacks then the chances are pretty good that he will not get a 2nd contract from the Cowboys (but that isn't even a sure thing because they could do a 1 year "prove-it" deal).

But if he plays all 16 and racks up 7 sacks, then I could easily see a 2nd contract offered by the team.

It all depends what the market will give him. Personally, I don't bring him back unless it's such a no-brainer deal that it's worth our while. I wouldn't even want him on a prove-it deal. It'd have to be something like Terrence's extension. Not in terms of the money but in terms of the team-friendliness. Just really hard to work with a trench guy with back problems.

I agree that back surgeries are touchy... But without knowing the what, where & why for each surgery I wouldn't begin to guess on how they may impact him this season. "Gronk" has had 4 back surgeries since college and the last one was disk... And his prognosis for the upcoming season has been positive from everything I've read/heard.

He'll have 18 sacks this year and 20 Million per year next off season. Which is fine with me, we all know what he really is.

I thought he could come back for the playoffs. Wonder if they'd even activate him if he can.

Provided that the commissioner signs off on it, and he stays clean, yes, he would be eligible to return for the divisional round of the playoffs.

Well, folks, I think we have found the 2017 Cowboys' Whipping Boy for training camp, at least. Former awardees like Claiborne, Carr, Wilcox, and Free are all gone. Lawrence might get some competition for this title from Chaz Green, though. But, I think Lawrence will be under the microscope.

Lawrence might want to give Miles Austin a call for advice on how best to handle the award.

I think you're right. Though you shouldn't censor people by pointing it out.
