The question here is, do you ever compare Romo with either Manning, Rothlesloser, Rivers, or any other 1st round choice?

Comparing play on the field is simple. The draft status means zip or Romo is still just a guy under this criteria.

We can compare those players now after the success Romo has had but I was referring to the initial expectations for the players we aquire. I never expected Romo to turn into a franchise QB as an UFA. A current case in point is Stephen McGee; I don't think he was drafted to take over for Romo but instead develop into a quality back-up that can keep us competitive should Romo go down. At worse, maybe we can get a first day draft pick in return if he shows something. The same for Austin as a #1 receiver. I had higher expectations for Harper just because of where he was drafted.

If we can occassionally hit a home run with some of the lower round picks while the rest are quality back-ups, I'd be extremely happy.

Sorry to say it but.Austin and Hurd are JAGS. They know the system.. The coaching staff has spent years on them and they have built a trust with Tony.. But neither of them are special. Giant fans thought David Tyree was all that because of potential and that one catch he made in the superbowl.. Now he's cut.. Wouldn't be surprised if we spend a high draft pick on a receiver next year.. And Ogletree is better than both of them..

Is anyone cooling off on Terrell Owens and how Dallas just won't be able to make a big play in the passing game without him?

I was never "high" on Austin.

He is a 4th string guy with some physical ability.

Never really excepted anything more from him.

What an idiot .....

Lost in all this is: at what point can we say "the QB makes the WR as much as the WR makes himself."

Not that I don't like Austin, he's one of my favorites. Just saying it's improbable that all these guys like Austin (undrafted), Hurd (undrafted), Crayton (7th round pick), and Oggletree (undrafted) all look like worldbeaters. We just have crazy good WR scouts, or is having a QB just that important? Probably a little of both.

Or is the WR position and it's impact on the game just crazily overrated in an age of video games and fantasy football?

I swear there are some fans who would probably trade a franchise All Pro left tackle for a #2 WR. The majority of fans, as a matter of fact.
