Is it James Casey vs Martellus Bennett?

We are now hearing that the Cowboys are in love with James Casey.

So I was thinking about how he winds up here and gets on the field.

One scenario that came up for me was that Martellus is trade bait. I know he's got a lot of talent, but he's got the fine on his resume already and he's a spotlight lover. I have heard the Cowboys aren't in love with him having a blog at the DMN.

Maybe the Cowboys are a little concerned he's not completely focused on football. And I am a little worried he may find him some himself in some more trouble, not that he will be looking for it, during the course of his career.

Then we hear the new philosophy out at the Ranch is all about getting guys who are all about the game and not much else.

Casey presents some interesting scenarios. If he's the #2 TE he would also be the #1 H Back. On any given play he could be lined up at FB, TE or split wide with a formation switch.

We hear he has he ability to learn every position under the sun and have it down to a science within minutes.

I don't think we have heard of these kinds of praises for Bennett. It's more like we have heard just the opposite.

So I guess my question is this.

Do you think the Cowboys are looking to find a way to replace Bennett with Casey in the Cowboys offense?

Pal, I'll give you credit, you just came up with a scenario that I hadn't even considered... and looking at it, it's not at all implausible...

Trade Bennett for a late round pick and use the 2nd on Casey?

Sounds like a nightmare waiting to come true.

I think Casey, assuming he can block well enough, replaces Cricket (not Bennett).

IMO, I think Casey will be able to block very well with some tutoring.

The guy even played on the DL when guys on his team were injured.

He is just a very good football player, IMO.

Hypothetically, what would be the trade value for Bennett?

If you could get the second-rounder needed to ensure you got Casey, then maybe.

But the whole secnario seems a bit of a stretch.

Bennett would school Casey and than tell him how ugly he is.

No doubt.

Besides, we're looking at Casey as a FB. (And I don't think he ends up a Cowboy anyway.)

I think it would be more like trade up a bit if Casey is near the #51 spot or take him if he's there and then move Bennett along with some other late round picks to get back into the second round for a S, WR, G, OLB, ILB.

Anything less than a 2nd round pick for Bennett and we'd have been robbed blind. Even that's not worth it because everyone knows he can be a good pro and the Cowboys have already developed him a bit. That would be INFINITELY worse than trading Fasano because at least Fasano wasn't anything special in Dallas. Bennett on the other hand has shown great potential.

How's casey as a blocker? From what I've seen of him, he looks pretty good out of the backfield. No gripes upgrading the FB position, that's for sure.

He's a former baseball player, so he's a lock to be a Cowboy either way.

I think for what they want to do with Casey that it wouldn't effect Martellus Bennett that much.

Plus Martellus is one heck of a blocker for us. He has to stay if for nothing else he gives good help with outside rushers.

I think the whole thought of Casey in this offense is his ability to give us flexibility in any formation because he can turn into any position at any time.

Plus having an H-back helps on Counter plays and we'll be sure to run a lot of counters when Felix checks in.

I understand that completely, but who spends a 2nd round pick on an FB in 2009? Sure, he has a lot of skills, but we have an offensive coordinator who's not likely to put them to use.

No way they are labeling him a FB.

They are labeling him a 'football player'.

I just don't see the need for Casey if Bennett is still on the roster.

And I would be very worried that Casey could handle all this stuff as a rookie.

And is there any reason a defense should expect Deon Anderson to do anything else than block when he's on the field?

And when this offense got down inside the Red Zone (one yard line) where you would need a true FB they just bring in a big body. It's not like Anderson wows anyone with his blocking any way.

But if this offense is at the five yard line and Casey is moving all over the place the defense is thinking. Now Bennett also gives you an advantage inside the five as well because of his size and leaping ability.

For some reason I just don't see Bennett here if Casey is here.

Is this guy really projected to go in the 2nd? The two top FBs last year went in the 6th and 7th -- and they were both very highly rated.

A 2nd round pick for Bennett is nuts. I am hearing a 2nd round pick for Anquan Boldin.

Just because a player is drafted in the 2nd he doesn't retain that value when he's on the block.

The way Casey works the middle of the field reminds me of Witten.
This guy would be an improvement over Cricket IF he can block well enough.
That's big IF in my mind.

Yeah, but I don't know if most teams are looking at him as a fullback. Whether or not he's an FB or TE varies by the publication or site you're reading.

It's not like Anderson is an all-world blocker.
