Is it out of the question that Escobar turns into a poor man's Gronk?

not in the same class as Gronk and anyone thinking so is blind deaf and dumb. It is not just physical ability its attitude and so on. In every way Escobar is not close.

It was stupid to draft him. No doubt about it. By the time we drafted Escobar it was clear Witten is indeed an iron man. ANY OTHER POSITION would have been a better pick. We might have gotten a decent back up QB, maybe a RB, who knows.

You do not draft because you fear an iron man might just get injured. Truly stupid thinking.

But isn't the fact that JWit is an iron man make Escobar's selection even more a wasted pick? Why couldn't we use the pick on someone who actually had a chance to contribute as a starter?
And I doubt very seriously Escobar is anywhere close to Witten, let alone Gronk.

It might be less than smart to not have a capable backup in case Witten somehow does get injured during the season. You can hate the pic but he is a reliable backup with plenty of talent.

We'll see. There are so many directions we can go on offense this season. But I think we're going to see guys like Escobar and Beasley and Dunbar used a lot in this offense. Maybe not in terms of receptions all the time, but schematically to put pressure on the defense.

Escobar, in particular, I think is in for a big year as TE2s go.

He is a reliable backup. He isn't a starter. We got in trouble in the 90s trying to draft reliable backups and not starters.
That's not the way to approach talent acquisition, IMO.

Escobar's a backup in Dallas, but at this point he'd be a reliable starter in a lot of other offenses. This is a draft pick we've hit on. We just haven't given him the opportunities to show it to everybody yet.

they basically tripled him on his first td last night lol

Steelers are so bad in the secondary, they have no one who can match up either. It's like you have this huge freakish TE running around with little over the hill DBs covering him.

And on the ISO play, Gronk will probably beat any LB in this league 1 on 1.

Escobar can't even sniff his jock strap.

Id bet on Kuechley over gronk. Plus, luke is more likely to play an entire season.

What makes you think we've "hit" on this draft pick?
Let's say Escobar had the talent of Gronk or Witten, do you honestly think his role would be as minor as it is now?

Escobar will never have the physicality/toughness to be a truly great TE in my opinion. He can still turn into a decent receiving option, but elite TE is pretty out of the question in my opinion. Scott Chandler or someone like that is probably a more reasonable comparison...

I would like to see Escobar turn into Escobar and play like the guy we highly rated in the draft.

I did my fantasy draft and thought to myself it's too bad for Escobar bc there are not 5 tight ends on other teams as good as he is. If he was somewhere else he'd be a top 5 TE likely.

Oh, I didn't say he had the talent of Gronk or Witten, because those are two all-time greats at their position. But you just need to see Escobar make plays in the passing game when he gets his opportunities to realize he's got a ton of potential that we haven't tapped yet. And then listen to the buzz around him in camp this year, or watch his productivity in the preseason games.

His size and hands alone make him a legit red zone threat with Dez on the other side. The fact that you can split him out and use him as a WR in two TE sets means he's a matchup problem for defenses who have to decide if they want to play that as a run formation and cover him or Beasley with a LB or bring in the extra DB and have us run at it with the two TEs.

He's just a good player. I have no idea why fans don't like him. Well, they don't like him because he's another 2nd round TE, but that's not his fault. All he does is come into games and catch what you throw to him.

Chandler turned out to be a pretty dang good TE in his own right. But I think Escobar's potential is a fair bit higher. I agree, though, that he's not going to be much more than a get-in-your-way type of blocker, but that's ok as long as he can catch the football. He's one of my picks for a breakout player in Dallas this season. I think he and Beasley and, probably, Randle, all outperform expectations this season.

When we play the Pats How would we best try to defend Gronk ?

Yeah, those 4 TE sets in the red zone last night were pretty interesting. You have to honor the run. Which means somebody's covering a tall TE with a LB. That's why we signed Jones, but covering four of them and still defending the run is a tall order. No pun intended.
