Is something wrong with this defensive scheme?

It worked great for marinelli in Chicago. But here, receivers seem to run wide open. RB's have plenty of holes to run through.

Dallas didnt do enough this offseason to improve the defensive front seven, IMO.

I believe it comes down to the Billy's and the Joe's, not the X's and the O's, in this case. The talent level has to improve or we will see more of the same.

IMHO, they don't have the right personnel for this scheme. For example, I believe that Scandrick can cover, but not Carr and Claiborne.

Why do you think that?

On a related note, if you guys haven't heard it yet, Marinelli's most recent interview on DC.com is pretty complimentary of our secondary talent. Both at S and at CB. I'm pretty curious to see how he plays things on the back end this season, honestly. As underwhelmed as I am by our defensive personnel, it should at least be fun to watch early on given all the variables and new players we'll be trotting out.

It takes discipline and our head coach instills none of that.

In all honesty, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Our scheme is wrong for this talent level we have. For example, we are playing zone coverage using man corners. Its like trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. Additionally, our talent level, especially in the front 7, is lacking to put it nicely.

We need to improve the talent level and adjust the scheme to fit the talent better. Its like Gregg Popovich with the Spurs, they have won multiple championships playing different styles each time. When he had the twin towers of David Robinson and Tim Duncan, the team was primarily a low post offense. When they no longer had the talent for a low post offense, they adjusted. This past season their strength was passing and 3 point shooting and they basically played "Euro ball" winning the Championship this year.

So they adjusted the scheme depending on the talent they have and since the talent changes, your scheme must change as well.................Cowboys do not do this.

Ahhhh, if you have good football players and coaches you'll win, if not you'll lose. I'm not sure at this point we have either.

I know our key players were aging already, but would our defense really have been this decimated and sparse in talent had we stuck with the 3-4?

I admit that I thought we could make the transition, but time has clearly proven that switch to be completely disastrous. I honestly feel like the Campo days are back with this D--and like those years, failure to get a pass rush will result in a host of other issues--big plays given up, less guys in the box = bad run defense, corners 10 yds off etc.

I think the combination of a poor scheme fit for our players and lack of attention given to finding the right players is going to result in a disastrous season. I don't think it's the scheme. It's the team planning done by the GM, the GM's son, and coach.

That foundation along the dline has been crumbling away for the past 7 years in favor of a romo friendly offense. Had no depth, nothing to build on and converting to a 4-3 pretty much destroyed it. Plain and simple time to rebuild the dline and quit wasting 2nd and 3rd round picks on tight ends and receivers. Romo has proven he can work with free agents over there

A NFL defense needs NFL quality talent, there's no scheme that can make up for the lack of that

It just seems to me by watching film of Scandrick that he is in a better position to make plays than Carr and Claiborne. Carr and Claiborne get beat more often than not.

Besides, Carr is overpaid and Claiborne can't stay healthy. The game against SD marks the third opening preseason game in a row that Claiborne has missed because of an injury.

But with the news that was released about Scandrick being suspended 4 games because he violated the NFL's substance abuse rules, Carr and Claiborne better step up.
